On tap at Rattle n Hum, NYC. Big coffee on the nose. Easy head with some lacing, but not much. Taste is stronger than the texture would indicate. A little smokiness & a bit of bitter add up to an interesting beverage. It hints at complexity but never quite gets there. Sort of like a painting in primary colors. It can be quite appealing, but with a more deft touch the challenges on both sides of the appreciation equation are amped.

Don't get me wrong, I"m enjoying this, but there are 40 taps in front of me & in that environment my thirst may be quenched, but my curiosity lingers.

Served from the bottle into a nonic glass.

A- Poured black with frothy mocha colored head that left some dense and chunky lace. 4

S- Lots of dark fruits and some light smokiness and roasty notes. 3.5

T- Lots of dark fruits notes of raisin and slightly tart cherry juice, pretty big roasty character but definitely much more on the sweeter side for a porter. 3.5

M- Prickly carbonation, pretty smooth, not a dry finish. 3.5

O- It skews a little sweeter than I prefer for the style, but the dark fruit notes are pleasant and uniquely prominent for the style. It is missing a lot of the chocolate and coffee notes I really enjoy in most porters though. 3.5

Pours almost completely black except for an eggplant purple hue . It's not that there's any light coming though even on the edges. It's that purplish hue that tells me this is the darkest brown and not black. Bitter chocolate on the nose and a creaminess. Roasted malt that has been blackened to a succulence. It boasts of the fruit it might have if left to blacken further. But there is no fruit. There is a sweet bit of caramel under that chocolate and a faint hint at smoke. taste is wonderful and follows the nose all the way. Dry bitter chocolate and some weak coffee. Crisp malt that is a touch bitter. Nutty too but not sweet. It has a creamy soft mouthfeel that feels thin and easy to the palate but is really medium. Finishes dry and hearty with plenty of complexity. The fruitiness form malt sneaks in as the beer warms and it is dry raisin.

This is terrific!
