No date on the bottle, but I'm sure it's this years.
Poured into a Westbrook Snifter from a bottle purchased at The Charleston Beer Exchange.
A - Pours pitch black with a fingers worth of khaki head. Leaves a somewhat splotchy lacing on the sides of the glass after swirling it around and a 1/4" head ring. Very common RIS appearance.
S - The nose reveals vanilla/oak initially with figs, dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, and a hint of alcohol. I believe there is a touch of rubber in there. The aroma is not as melded as well I would have hoped for such a highly rated stout. This is a very minute detail though.
T - On entry, you get the barrel flavor upfront followed by dark chocolate and loads of malts. There is very little hop presence in this beer. It tastes like you just ate a Hershey's Dark Special Chocolate miniature bar.
M - Slightly viscous and medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Leaves a spiciness from the barrels on your tongue and cheeks. Well balanced feel!
O - Of course there are far more superior BB stouts out there, but this is a great staple to keep on hand or give to some one that has never had a barrel aged stout. I'll re-review this in a few months and see if there is any change.
