Poured dirty in a tulip from a 12oz bottle. Fast rising 1 inch head, cream in color. Deep brown with a very small amount of translucence. I smell caramel. Very smooth taste, malt, barley, hops and caramel. The ingredients are simple, the boiling process however is a long one which helps gives it that smooth taste. It's a good beer. No more, no less.

Had this as part of a late lunch at Malabar Farms Restaurant. They had a nice selection of Ohio craft beers available and, in retrospect, I probably should have opted for a kolsch of another brewery but I chose this because I like Scottish Ales. Things got off to a bad start when the waitress brought me a frosted glass; ordinarily I have told her to bring me a room temperature one but it was our anniversary and I didn't want my wife to think I was being unreasonable.

The look was the best part of it with a rich brown color, however much I could see through the melted frost, and a nice off white head. The smell was a little thin as was the taste; I just didn't get enough of the the rich caramel flavors I associate with a Scottish Alr. Whoever called it more like a brown ale is spot on The mouthfeel was closer to what I was expecting but still not good enough. Although certainly adequate as a lunchtime beer, as a Scottish ale it's second tier at best imo. Perhaps wee heavies have made my expectations for this style unrealistic.

Clear dark copper with garnet highlights in a Cisco fisheye pint glass. The modest creamy light khaki head quickly dissipates to a ring leaving no lacing. Fine carbonation lazily rises within.

The aroma opens with sweet malt and roasted caramel. Peet aromas are pronounced and earthy, followed by cashew and dried autumn wood. Only a suggestion of smoke lingers in the background.

Malt is balanced between roast and sweet with fresh baked whole wheat bread. Nuts give way to tobacco leaves and the modest lingering finish becomes sweet. Warmth surprisingly has no impact.

The medium body and creamy textured beer has soft carbonation and a slight presence of alcohol.

While this is a tasty beer, one will not find oneself contemplating it deeply. Rather there is a solid base from which to launch hearty conversation. It is reminiscent of a savory Brown Ale.

Twisted Kilt Scotch Ale | Thirsty Dog Brewing Company. Poured from the bottle into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass, the head on this beer is three fingers thick and off-white, with solid lacing, and a deep, dark reddish brown body.

Smells like a generous helping of the caramelized malts mentioned on the label with only very faint notes of scotch.

Wow, this almost actually tastes like caramel! Yet nothing is too heavy or lingering; goes down nice& has a quenching finish.

Medium light mouthfeel with mild carbonation.

I'll choose to give Twisted Kilt Scotch Ale | Thirsty Dog Brewing Company a 4.5. This is a nice mix of flavor and drinkability.

12 ounce bottle - $2.49 at Total Wine & More in Greenville, South Carolina.

Appearance: Pours a relatively clear, dark reddish-brown body with a slim, thin, light ecru head.

Smell: Toasty, lightly nutty with a thin shaving of roast. A little fruitiness. Modest notes of cocoa and the brownest of sugars.

Taste: A washed out, watered-down taste of heavily toasted bread given a bit of brown sugar sweetness and a hint of cocoa powder. Light raisiny fruitiness. A modest touch of spicy hops with a very low bitterness. Sweetish, toasty finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium-low carbonation.

Overall: So-so.
