Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #42 (Jul 2010):

This beer is clear and tawny, with a head that rises high and leaves a lot on the glass. Coffee, brown bread, a little yeast and a bit of dried plum in the aroma. Crispness dances around within its creamy mouthfeel. This brew packs lots of malt and a hint of spice. It starts off bready, then a little caramel and even some burnt sugar comes in. Modest hopping lets the malt really take hold of the palate. The yeast and fruit shine in the middle. This beer has loads of flavor and is so drinkable. A dreamy ale.

A - Pours clear copper/amber with one finger of tan head. Head doesn't last long but there is some good lacing.

S - Mostly caramel malt, some grain and a nice bread aroma.

T - Starts with some coffee, which I did not get in the aroma. After that the caramel malt takes over, with other flavors of earthy bread, raisin and some subtle hop bitterness on the finish.

M - Medium/light mouthfeel with some biting carbonation. Subtle bitterness on the finish.

O - An enjoyable, easy drinking ale with some nice earthy flavors that don't overpower the palate.

Appears a clear deep ruddy amber hue with a bright lighter khaki hue with even finely spread lacing around the chalice. Aroma strong smoked peated malts an amazingly light smoked meats tone going on. Flavor is great a rush of smokey sweet malt light brisk malt character this is really well made Scottish ale, there's body moderate carbonation wonderful mix of flavors in this beer. Sturdy herbal backing earthy hops this stuff is great really drinkable I'm glad I gambled on a bottle. Definitely one I will look out for I wanna try more Thirsty Dog brews, these are solid standup players in the Ohio microbrew scene. I heard there brewer used to work at Great Lakes and he helped formulate some of the famous Great Lakes brews so my next stop will be their Dortmunder Lager aka Labrador Lager.

12 oz bottle served in a glass mug.

Pours dark brown, clear, with a well proportioned and very durable tan head.

A load of smoke in the nose but more subdued in tasting where more molasses and dark fruit notes come out. High levels of roasted barley in both the nose and taste.

Good carbonation and solid medium body.

O: Served at about 45F, it improved with warming.

A story of toasted malt, a significant caramel. A decent serviceable Scottish. A moderate smokey aroma, a little peaty taste. Dark yellow colour, modest off-white head. Creamy mouthfeel. Satisfying, spot-on style, though not terrific. On the sweeter sugar syrupy side.

in Ohio for a hockey tourny and had a chance to try some Thirsty Dog beers. The Twisted Kilt pours a hazey orange color with good white head that laced. The smell was powered by peaty malt and earth. Taste is a bit sweet, with a hefty pulse of peaty malts. A bitter finish helps to clear the pallet. The mouthfeel is medium to light in body with good carbonation. Overall it is a good scotch ale to session.

Twisted Kilt had a lot of promise. I do really enjoy everything I've had from Thirsty Dog, and Scotch Ales are rising on my list of favorite styles. The color was like iced tea, maybe a bit more orange. Some moderate malty flavors with some light hop bitterness and some fruit notes. There's an unexpected sour finish, but once I knew to expect it, I liked it.

Overall, I thought it was alright. I might get it again, but there are other Scotch Ales I much prefer

12oz bottle thanks to Ryan011235.

Clear reddish-amber in appearance with a one-finger off-white head.

Not too much happening on the nose. You've got your caramel and you've got your roast, and there's a touch of earthiness in there.

On the flavor, it gets a bit more interesting. The caramel malts contribute a good level of sweetness, and there's a hint of toast and some graham cracker notes with an earthy finish.

Medium-bodied with average carbonation and a very run-of-the-mill average mouthfeel.

You know, man, this is not a bad beer. It's drinkable and to style.

From notes. Draft at Grapevine. Orangy/amber pour, nearly zero white bubbles on top.

Has that lager scent. Musty, malt, toffee.

Some malt, peat and heavier yeast tones.

Goes down quite easy. More lively mouthfeel than the appearance. Pretty light however.
Reminded me quite a bit of Yuengling lager.

caramel colored brown coming out of the bottle. Some nice, light ruby colored tones mixed in throughout as well really did a nice job of lightning it up a bit. Some haze, but pretty good clarity. A nice one inch foam head of white then came over the top and settled down slowly, leaving behind a broken crown and some decent side glass lace.

The aroma was totally malt driven as you would expect, with lots of nice caramel and earthy tones. Nice hints of grain and a touch of almost a raisin or fig like flavor as well. Very nice, but a touch on the light side would be my only complaint with it. The flavor largely followed suit, not being as sweet as I thought it would be, there were several touches of fruit, and a ton of grain in the flavor. The caramel malt driven back coming through very nicely as well. Your classic scotch ale flavor here, with not a whisper of alcohol anywhere to be found.
