This truly is a great RIS and used to be a bargain, still is I guess. Pours traditional black w/ decent head and nice lacing. It smells amazing, chocolate in the mix. Chocolate all in the flavors as well. Maybe some raisin and licorice. The alcohol is present and doesn't make a bad sipper. Not the creamiest, slightly thin, but goes down well. I would never turn this beer down. BOLD!

Easily one of the better Russian Imperial Stouts out there.. it's year-round as well.

Bottle purchased at World Market in Charlotte, NC for $2. No freshness or bottling date on label.

A - Pours very dark, almost black. A fluffy tan head sits for a minute or two before dissipating. Great retention and good lacing. Probably the most carbonated RIS I've ever seen.

S - Bittersweet chocolate, touch of coffee. A hint molasses and black licorice is coming through. A noticeable aroma of alcohol also lingers.

T - Nice blend of all the mentioned aromas. They all blend together in this one beautifully. Dark chocolate maltiness at first, followed by coffee beans and licorice as well. Bittersweet chocolate then fades to a roasted finish. Very nice and well balanced brew.

M - Medium bodied and quite carbonated. I would like it more if it were thicker and the carbonation were toned down a bit. Warming is noticeable in my throat and gut.

O - Tasty, enjoyable beer. I would probably enjoy it more on a chilly winter day, as opposed to an 82º summer afternoon. Not my favorite RIS, but one I'll definitely have again.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter at around 50 degrees Fahrenheit

Appearance: Pours a dark brown but when in the glass it's motor oil black with no light coming through. A gorgeous foamy one finger brown head

Smell: I get dark fruits, roasted malts/coffee, and slight chocolate. In that order, and perhaps a little too dark fruit heavy

Taste: Roasted malt flavors all around; Dark fruit upfront that transitions into roasted malts/molasses/coffee. Then when I think that's it, several seconds later comes a pleasing espresso aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Approaching heavy body; I get some alcohol, but it's counterbalanced by bitterness

Overall: This is a big beer that could have bigger flavors. Everything is played safe. There's a good transition between roasted malt, molasses, and coffee flavors. But nothing really stands out. It is however a solid representation of the style and something Id recommend as a starter RIS
