12oz brown bottle with foil wrapped neck poured chilled in a stout glass.

The color is dark cocoa brown with thick rapidly falling head with fine bead with spots of lace that sticks and clarity is translucent. The smell has intense bourbon in the nose with some vanilla elements and light custard-like sweet caramel creamy scent with light toasted grain and yeast with bready quality and mild alcohol and sweet woody accent. The feel has a thick body up front with moderate carbonation and light wooody texture with gentle sweet feel in the middle and gentle alcohol w/ slightly thick body and spice element as it finishes.

The flavor brings a lot of malt with moderately woody flavor and light caramel with buttery toffee-like taste with slight toasted character and mild warming flavor from bourbon in the background. The taste has a good cohesive sweetness with barrel blended well into the base and nicely balanced malt with scotch ale flavor smooth yet still strong as it finishes more on the sweet side. Overall this is a great mix of scotch ale with bourbon in an almost seamless combo -this is like a match made in heaven with malt complexity enhanced nicely by the woody barrel aging.

Drank from a 12 fl. oz. (355 ml.) bottle acquired in a trade with mps
Served in a tulip

The almost clear, garnet hued liquid was topped by a near three-finger tall, tight, creamy, khaki-colored crown. Very solid retention. Patchy, odd-shaped streaks of lacing coated the glass.

The aroma was sweet, robust and very malt forward. Loads of deep, caramelized malts and toffee. Fruity with a noticeable brown sugar-like sweetness. Somewhat boozy. Bourbon notes were apparent. Good dose of vanilla as well. As the beer warmed, the nose became sweeter, richer and more robust overall.

The flavor profile was similar to the aroma, but perhaps a half step less impressive. Caramel malts and rich brown sugar notes led things off. Fruity. Somewhat biscuity. The crisp, yeasty notes reminded me of something I might find in a traditional beer of this style from the UK. There was a noticeable bourbon-like kick on the dry, slightly tannic, minerally finish. Some steeliness came through as well. With time, the flavor profile intensified. The beer also became sweeter and the booziness mellowed out.

The mouthfeel was medium bodied for the style and contained a light, spritzy effervescence. Slightly creamy. All in all, fairly non-descript.

Wulver is an enjoyable Wee Heavy that stays rather true to the style. A slightly more robust flavor profile and a bigger mouthfeel however might have lent itself well to the barrel aging.

Wow, that is one sweet SOB. Barrel is really prevalent, but man, the sweetness takes this b*tch to a whole new level. And the ABV is VERY noticeable. Tasted like liquor at times. Also, it got sweeter as it warmed up. I loved the first few sips, then the sweetness started to get a bit much. Glad I shared it with a buddy because it would have been too much for me.

Very strong. I expected this however it was a bit strong for my taste. I am a very big bourbon fan so I decided to give this a shot. Strong rich coffee sent with a similar bite to the tongue. Heavy in abv and you can tell. I feel like one or two of these 12% would knock me out. Not my favorite, but doable.

A - dark rich brown color, like a stout. S - nutty hint, strong coffee stout aroma. Hint of alcohol. T - tasted like a stout with a smack of yummy bourbon at the end. M - Thick and rich, no complaints. O - about what I expected, not gonna have to drink to many of these to enjoy a good night.

$ 6.99/12 oz bottle
Undated bottle at 45 degrees into snifter
Aroma very malty and oaky
Head average (3.5 cm), very light brown, fizzy, rapidly diminishing to 2 mm ring and broken layer
Lacing – none
Body dark brown, opaque
Flavor begins very sweet with flavors of oak and malt. After a few moments, the alcohol is just detectable; no hops, no diacetyl. Ends with a lingering sweetness and an alcohol stomach burn.
Palate medium to full, creamy, carbonation lively

This is a very good beer and well worth the price. The flavor is excellent, the aroma is excellent, the palate is very good, and the appearance is good but somewhat lacking because of the absence of lacing.
