Though it can get pretty cold and snowy in its southern regions, most of us here in North America think of Argentina has an arid, hot, and humid place; Quilmes 1890 has a bright and sunny complexion that enforces that impression. Clear, resplendent, with only a thin patch of head, it definitely looks like a refreshing warm-weather beer.
The aroma is sweeter than it should be but does offer some reassuring breadiness and clean cereal grain flavour. There's a faint hint of butter not unlike a cheap, lightly oaked Chardonnay but it's overlooked easily enough amidst the mild and pleasant kettle corn notes.
Quilmes 1890 is supposedly brewed according to an old recipe from the late nineteenth century (the year 1890 perhaps?). Relative to most national brand lagers it drinks much cleaner and tastes more authentic, by which I mean like a beverage fermented from actual grain as opposed to some kind of concentrate or set of adjuncts. Indeed they don't make 'em like they used to...
As result of this dependence on cheap ingredients and various other additives - to say nothing of the reduced state of the modern palate - most industrialized, commercial lagers (especially Latin American ones) tend to have an off-putting, overly sweet flavour. But this one is not so bad; it has an agreeable cereal grain taste that doesn't linger and holds up after losing its chill.
Quilmes is already tremendously popular with Argentinians, but part of me wonders if they couldn't do better by ensuring their standard lager be brewed to the standards of this, their "premium" brand. 1890 is every bit as approachable (and, frankly, plain), not to mention more agreeable and refreshing for its cleaner, more rounded profile.
