500-mL bottle, acquired at the Anniversary Party in August 2015. No. 15/172. $9.75.
Poured to 2 8-oz tulips, dark brown out of the bottle but close to black in the glass. 1-inch light brown head. Initially, in my opinion, there was a slight amount of chocolate on the aroma. After the first whiff, however, the rye overpowered. For most of the session the barrel-aging was nonexistent (to be fair, this is only 7%). Unfortunately there is also an unpleasant plastic/cellophane aroma here.
The rye was as strong on the tongue as on the nose. This is a very astringent beer. It leaves a strong burn in the chest; I am unable to discern if the burn derives from the rye spice or the alcohol; regardless, this beer feels heavier than its ABV. I was not in a hurry to finish my 8-oz pour.
