Another Livery bottle courtesy of Jale (thanks Jim!!). This one is a slight gusher, not explosive, rather a slow bubbling over about 2 seconds after popping the cap. The beer is a hazy orange, surprisingly low light transmission for such a light colored liquid. An initial finger of foam recedes rapidly to a thin ring.

The nose is nice, oaky and a bit acidic, maybe a hint of acetone. Not unlike the smell from some of the sours I've tried from Ann Arbor Brewing, notably Demetrius (which I've now tried 4 times, I'm one of the few who love this beer). Some mild hops beneath the oak, and a little Belgian yeast as well.

It tastes exactly as advertised, a Belgian IPA aged with bugs in oak barrels. The hops taste aged and have that "Belgian IPA" quality which, while I don't appreciate as much as citrusy American IPAs, is well executed for the style. Moderate acidity on the back end leading to a low belly burn. Nice overall, but there's an acrid feel in the aftertaste that I could do without.

Low carbonation despite the bottle gush, appropriate feeling for a barrel aged beer. And it should be noted that the Livery recommended bottle buyers wait a few months to open them to allow for carbonation to develop. This particular bottle was released a little over 1 month ago so maybe it's a little early.

Overall I liked this more than other reviewers who tried it on tap or from growlers. Thanks again Jim!

Bottle from the Livery's first release courtesy of standardcherry. Thank you immensely!

This was shared with a stellar Indy crew. This pours a light bodied polished copper in color with a half finger white head. The nose is bright and tart with Brett and a moderate yet defined light acidity. It does have some legitimate oak and some red wine barrel characteristics. The flavors are earthy and funky with a light tartness and an off dry, hoppy finish. It has an interesting, tannic fruit character that is different and earthy. It has a moderate Brett presence. It drinks a little light in body but has nice, yet very unique. Overall this was a pretty solid beer. I don't have anything to really compare it to but it was a nice tart wild. I would definitely drink it again.

On tap during my visit on 10/23/2011, this was may favorite during the visit. The imperial was a cloudy gold with a finger-head. It possessed a sweet hoppy aroma that foretold what was to come. The smooth caramel initial taste coated the tongue before fading into citrus and sour apple flavors. It went down very smooth despite the thick texture and cloudiness of the appearance. The hoppiness was not present until the aftertaste. It was hoppy enough to make the style obvious, but did not overwhelm the other aspects of the beer. It is nicely balanced and paced so that no aspect of the flavor can be dismissed.

growler purchased at the brewery april 29/2011 and kept refrigerated. sampled may 8/2011. this batch was listed at 7.75% ABV.

pours deep coppery orange with a small cap of fine white head. the head quickly drops to a layer on top of the beer and leaves a bit of spotty lace.

aroma is odd... super peanuty. bit of almond. grain and whole wheat bread. actually, reminds me of a 7-grain bread with all the seeds and such in it. bit of cracker. bit of caramel. light alcohol.

taste is neat. the peanut character is definitely in the forefront, but it's got more to balance than in the aroma. earthy and woody. multi-grain bread. grain. cracker. almond and pecan. perhaps a hint of sourness. medium-low bitterness level. bit of astringent character. not much belgian or ipa here...

mouthfeel is nice. just under medium body. medium carbonation level.

drinkability is okay. it's mostly balanced, but nowhere near fitting the style, and the peanut character is nowhere near expected for either belgians or ipas, let alone the combo. I've enjoyed most everything else I've tried from the Livery, but this one seems to miss the mark.

On tap at The Livery.

Pours a pale golden color that is very hazy. A thin white head sticks around for just a bit before falling away. The nose is really odd and smells mostly like peanut oil. Other than that, there's a bit of graininess in the background. All the same in the flavor, which is really quite odd. Nutty and very reminiscent of peanut oil, plus some tannic, grainy bitterness. No hops or Belgian character anywhere. Not a fan at all.

Poured into a tulip.

Pours 1/2 finger of white head. Color is a dark golden color with a brown hue to it.

Aroma: Lots of oak flavors, citrus, herbal notes, and spice flavors.

Taste: Lots of oak and more spice flavors with citrus. Kind of boozy. A bit of funk to it. Floral/grassy hops.

Mouthfeel: Bitter with a medium body and a low to medium amount of carbonation. Ends with a funky aftertaste, fairly clean.

Overall, a very unique beer, but not something that is overly drinkable. Still, something that is worth a try.
