Stopped on a fortunate day, when the IPA was only days old. You could have poured the beer in a sort of respirator device so that I could have breathed it all day and I would have been happy. Blurted out I think I like it better than Pliny.... was I in euphoria?
As for the rest of the line up, they were all solid although I also liked what I believed to be called a Norwegian Brown. I didn't have a growler and they were out but alas the bartender asked the masses if anyone had an extra growler. Into the night one went and minutes later I had my growler. This is a great place, which would be even cooler if they had a few unique or weird beers available and seems a little tiny bit pricey, but those are minor crimes when talking of the magnifitude of the mighty Livery. Will definitely go back, as I have been there 4 times already.

Almost the first ones through the door on a mid-winter Saturday for our first visit. Just us outsiders and a couple of locals. The bartender could not have been a nicer guy. Super friendly and more than willing to offer up information and tasters. A good jokester too. We sort of did the whole line up from a big cherry aged Belgian to a nice pilsner. The Freak Show red Belgian was a standout. The line up moves regularly apparently, and we were happy with the selection. I guess, not having been here before, that the bar used to be in the basement. Not anymore. It's upstairs in a big, high ceilings space with a big old hay elevator in the middle, a stage, and more seating on an upper level.
Even though Benton Harbor is like a scruffy little cousin to Gary IN, the Livery is a must stop if you are in the area. I would probably keep my Spidey senses on alert at night though.

From the outside the place looks great. You walk into the basement, and the atmosphere is like cheers... enjoyed the fact that they had a foosball table out that allowed me to get a workout. Unfortunately there was nothing bottled at the time and had growlers only. This didnt work out for me as it was a long drive home and the beer would have been warm. Beer was delicious!

The Livery is a hidden gem in the old deserted downtown of Benton Harbor, MI. You're greeted by an old, brick building that's extremely well kept and street parking right in front has never been a problem. There is a smaller, cozy bar downstairs with maybe 10-12 seats and a handful of tables. This bar seems to be the one open during the day. The upstairs bar is also small, 12 to 15 seats, but the seating area is much larger and there's a stage over in the corner. Both bars are nice, the basement is a little darker and drearier while the upstairs is better lit and better decorated.
The service has always been great here. No fuss, order and get your beer with the occasional Chicago Bears talk. The taplist is pretty extensive with 10-12 house beers, 2 or 3 ciders and a barrel aged option or two. The lines are well kept and the pours are proper. There are three different options for pour size so you can try however many or few you'd like in whatever amount you'd prefer.
I've always been a big fan of The Livery. It's a comfortable place to hang out for a while and the taplist always has a few interesting beers while all are well made.

Stopped in for lunch and to sample some brews.I hate to say a place is not worth a visit but this was really a poor experience.
The bar was empty and service was still deplorable, the bartender was taking orders from people that were behind us after she clearly watched us seat ourselves at the middle of the bar (many) minutes before. There was a local behind us and she was literally looking over our head to take their order 1st and more than just once and not only to us.
Had a flight (Overpriced) amounted to 3 10 oz beers (5oz pours we were told...) at a cost of around $15 or $5 / 10 oz. If the beer was good that would be fine...
Had 6 beers,3 were astringent as could be,one was an ESB that was an american red ale/amber one was earthy beyond what the beer should be and the "grand Reserve" a 2 yr barrel aged Bier de Garde was flat out infected / sour ,I can't imagine on purpose either.
Ordered 2 pizzas.12 and 15 each for a frozen pizza. One came out in 25 minutes the 2nd one we were told they ran out of pizza sauce and they were making more...IT WAS A FROZEN PIZZA !!!!
The pizza magically appeared when we told the bartender that we wanted the bill we needed to be somewhere else...
The building was fantastic...
I'm not sure who is rating this place 4-4.5 stars but seriously,if you would like a nice beer this is not the place to go especially with so many other GREAT breweries so close.
I know people will write the review off because there are so many other great reviews for this place but seriously,I have traveled quite extensively to breweries and with so many other great offerings in the area ,Bell's,New Holland,Greenbush,Dark Horse and Paw Paw brewing your time and pallet will thank you for heading somewhere else.

Stopped by right around opening (11:30) en route to Chicago from Grand Rapids for FoBAB 2012.
Really glad I made the stop. I've been wanting to stop here for a couple years now, but just haven't made it thru that far south west in Michigan. Glad I stopped. I was greeted by some crunchy Widespread on the jukebox and a very friendly Mikey G behind the bar. He was very helpful and just a great overall host. It's great a great atmosphere, and a fairly well rounded tap list (bit heavy on the Pale ale side). Had a couple meads on tap as well.
Did not try any food, but looked like a fairly basic menu, probably just what a small place like that needs. Worth a shot, it's a bit off the free way, but well worth it.

This place is great. Its like going over to your friend's house and hanging out in their basement. But in a good way. Passing through, I went there on a weekday when only the downstairs was open, but it had a great local feel that was real and welcoming. I imagine that on the weekends, or when they have live music upstairs, the whole atmosphere changes a great deal. The staff were great too, and quite responsive to my questions -- it was apparent that they took real pride in their brews. The Red Canoe is a must. A definite stop if in the area.

The brewpub area is in the basement and feels rather cozy despite seating for 70 or more. The have a counter with thin crust pizza you can order. I did'nt see any other food, but the pizza was very good. The wait staff were very friendly and happy to answer all my beer questions. Nice to see a couple of hand pulls along with a decent selection of styles. They have an upstairs area with music/bands on weekend evenings. The beer here is done well and a place I will stop whenever in the area. Not far off the I-94 corridor and worth the slight detour.
