So this is the holy grail of American beer destinations, or so it's been said. I've been twice, one visit was superior to the other, but I'll mention both visits in this review.

First time I visited was after the bus ran into the front and forced all visitors to enter in the same fashion as that of Prohibition. We were led down the back alley through the back door. A unique experience that I probably won't get again.

The selection the first time was spot on. I had never experienced Monks Flemish Red and what better than it on tap at Monks Cafe. I followed that with Consecration on tap ... good LAWD!!! The night was finished with 2009 750ml Lost Abbey Angel Share Brandy that was expensive ($40) but worth it IMO.

On my second visit, the first four beers I asked for were not available, even though the menu suggested they were. I was of course disappointed by this, but I found beers just fine othewise.

The food here is impeccable, top to bottom.

I can't complain about the place really ... the beer issue this last time was the only flaw that i can speak of, outside of that I love Monks.

I am an out of towner, but whenever I am in Philadelphia I make time for Monk's. Incredible selection of drafts which usually include a few offerings from Russian River. The mussels and frites are also top notch. The crowd can get pretty big depending on the day/time but it is worth the wait.

I hope you like Belgian beers because this place has got them. I love Monks. It is a must see when in Philly.

Awesome selection but VERY tiny. Hard to get service and hard to get what you really want.

My wife and I went to Monks Sunday on a whim. Their website, which I checked before taking the trip over said they had many beers on tap including Pliny the Elder. Once we arrived, it took the bartender about 10 minutes to emerge from the back area. He wasn't very helpful. Their tap list stunk. They only had Damnation on tap and the other selections were nothing special. My hopes were dashed and I won't be back.

Monks is part of our Mussel Fest annual event and should be visited not only for the incredible beer selection, but also for a pot of some of the best mussels in Philly. The Red Light, Ghent and Monks mussels are outstanding and taste even better being washed down with a glass of Pliny or Blind Pig. Excellent stop for beer and mussels!

Best bar on the planet to drink beer! Drink some Russian River or the house Flemish Sour under the unicorn tapestry in the windowless backroom, it's cool as hell. Bonus, awesome mussels and a killer legit veggie cheesesteaks.
