Bottle: solid brown 330mL bottle with a very stylish (and cute) label. I particularly like the "Does not contain any real ducks" label.

Appearance: a simply enormous head explodes over the top of a deep amber / slightly ruby body, though I will admit I did pour it pretty much straight in. Once the off-white head dropped to a two-finger creamy foam, I topped the glass up (more carefully) - the head is so thick and rocky that it looks like cumulonimbus clouds. A nice looking red - just remember to pour slowly at a 45-degree angle! Very low carbonation and quite clear - less sediment than the Red Duck norm.

Aroma: some sweet malts and that typical Red Duck tracle / molasses, with some earthiness underneath. Not mind-blowing, but certainly a nice semi-spiky red ale aroma.

Taste: big malt flavours, but quite bitter up front compared to most red ales. Nice though, rough caramel with some pine hops.

Aftertaste: unusual as it is to have the bitterness up front, it drops to be replaced by a caramel / treacle sweetness. Very unusla indeed, but a lovely change to the norm. I like it.

Mouth feel: light- to- moderate in body with a spiky carbonation. Considering there was almost no carbonation visible on the pour, it is almost a bit too much funnily enough. Still, overall pretty good.

Overall: a very tasty red ale. Bitterness comes through first followed by a lasting sweetness. The usual price of AU$110 a case (2013) ain't too bad either considering the quality of the beer. This is the fourth Red Duck I've had in the last couple of days, and so far 3 of the 4 have been amazing. I think I like the Purrumbete Brewing style.

From Jim's Waitara

Pours a deep mahogany red, half finger head dies quickly to a film. Minimal spotty lace.

Not much on nose. Some treacle.

Taste is all dark treacle, burnt toffee/caramel and roast malts. Moderate hop bitterness to round out. Some apples in there as well. I also don't normally note tinned salmon as a taste in beer, but yes there are hints.

Mouthfeel quite lightly carbonated, light to medium bodied, at odds with ABV.

Not sure if it is the style I am not warming to, or this beer.

This pours a murky brown colour with a generous beige head.

Some sweet malts - brown sugarish coming through on the nose. Some earthiness to it.

Very malty on the palate but not too sweet. A bit of caramel. Some nuttiness. Alcohol on the finish.

Medium bodied. Could perhaps have done with some more.

I like this. I wish I'd tried it during the cooler months.

Poured into a hitachino nest glass.

A- Pours a reddy, browny amber, with a touch of head that quickly subsides. looks alright.

S- fair bit of sweet malt up front, not a whole lot i can make out, a touch of hop but pretty nondescript.

T- a whole bunch of chewy malts, very savoury and quite nice. theres a touch of bittering hops in there, but really just to round it off. The malts are the star of the show, bready, and pretty tasty.

M- i would have liked it to be a touch thicker, there is a a touch too much prickly carbonation which i think brings it down a touch.

D- I could easily have one or two in a night, but it would definitely be a colder weather beer. nice and malty, but a little bit nondescript at times.

Pours murky brown with a rapidly fading head.
Nose shows a little bit of earthy peat, loads of golden syrup, brown sugar and alcohol. Some spicy hops become apparent later.
Flavours are more focussed on nutty malt and spices. Unfortunately the malt is a little cardboard-y.
Body is somewhat watery.

Somewhat hazy red-brown colour with next to no head.

Dull slightly nutty malt aroma with notes of earth.

Malty yet still dry, nutty. There's almost a whisky note too. Decent.

Medium body with moderate carbonation. Fine.

A decent if unexceptional beer.

A - Poured into a pint glass a dark red copper with a couple of centimetres of beige head that slowly falls away.
S - A nice caramel maltiness, a decent amount of floral hops.
T - Sweet caramel malts without being too sticky balanced by floral hops which give a bit of bitterness.
M - Medium bodied with minimal carbonation.
D - Not something to session & not all that complex, just a well balanced & tasty beer.
