A - Pours a dark, murky, sludgy brown topped by a thin layer of sort-of head. No lacing.

S - Big and bold. You don't need to get too close to get a slap of sweet golden honey and caramel aromas. Complimented by some yeast, red wine and booze.

T - Sweet large slabs of honey, slightly vinuous, not overly complex, this guy brings some heat though.

M - Light - medium carbonation, a bit thin, I would like some more syrupy body.

O - Very interesting style, and one the Red Duck gang have tried a few times. I think this is the best of the two I've tried (other was The Bear). A nice post winter dinner sipper.

I think it's fair to say I have a complicated relationship with Red Duck. On one hand, you have superb beers like their Ox Imperial Stout, and their very drinkable Hoppy Amber, and on the other you have beers like... um... this one.

330ml bottle purchased from Slowbeer in Melbourne.

Pours a cloudy dark brown colour, with a galaxy film on the inside when swirled, but otherwise only forming a head due to turbulence from the pour. Fine carbonation and bead. Body is noticeably thick and sticky.

Nose delivers what it promises, at least partially: sweet, hot and sticky, with noticeably unpleasant barnyard horsey overtones. The heat gives a solvent-like intensity which accentuates the "pony" characters, while also infiltrating and violating your nostrils. I can't fault it for doing what it said it was going to do, except that smelling like a pony is a fucking stupid idea.

Taste is also noticeably unpleasant. Big sweaty, hay-like overtones, mingled with dung and rubbing alcohol. Very hot, and sickly sweet, just to ensure all the unpleasant characters get a broad basis on the palate. Despite this, it lacks complexity, and feels almost disgustingly light—I suppose it's unsurprising when the honey ferments out. This is really, really quite disgusting.

Yeah, I'm not pulling punches here: this is foul stuff. But by the same token, I would happily be effusive in my praise if they'd pulled the trigger on another weird endeavour and come up with something unique and interesting.

I can't believe Red Duck set out to brew a braggot that smelled and tasted like this: I can believe, however, that they came up with the name once they'd discovered the perverted places their experiment had taken them. This really shouldn't be—it's unpleasant, unrefined and undrinkable.

Pours coppery brown with almost no head.
Nose shows wild untreated honey and little else. Maybe some musty notes too I suppose.
Some of the honey is present as a flavour too, along with the musty character. Some alcohol is there, but it's kept well-integrated. A faint white wine character shows through too.
Needs more carbonation.
Not sure I'd want this again but worth trying.

Love the name and since i have more than a few horses ill be the judge on Smells like a Pony, definately a eye catching name tho and this is classed as a Buckwheat Braggot, which pours a very dark non see through copper hue which leaves a wispy half finger head that dissapears straight away and leaves no lacing whatsoever.

On smell it doesnt smell like a pony more like booze, honey, port, funk and red wine it really does smell strong.

Taste is wow its out there hey and i mean out there its basically a smack of strong honey really strong honey followed by tobacco, funk, booze,a slight touch of funky sweet red wine, wheat and finished with that strong honey flavour to take a nice edge off the booziness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with very light carbonation, almost like watery honey.

Overall im glad ive tried it but honestly this will not be everyones cup of tea,i know that i will finish this bottle but could not drink two of these in a sitting and definately not the sort of beer to start your night more like one to finish your night cheers.
