.5L brown glass bottle with unbranded pry-off pressure cap acquired at Hopfen und Malz in Berlin, Germany and served into a Berliner Kindl Weisse in me friend's gaff in Berlin. Reviewed live. Bet before: 06/03/15. 8.5% ABV per the label. Served cold and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: One finger wide head of pale khaki colour. Recedes fully within 10 seconds, leaving me no time to note its characteristics. Leaves no lacing.

BODY: Dark murky nontransparent brown colour. Dull. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

Appears undercarbonated. Not unique or special. I'm optimistic, but it isn't looking great.

AROMA: Nice lively wheat. Banana and clove from the yeast. Light bready malts. No alcohol or other off-notes are detectable. I don't detect any hop notes.

A pleasant aroma of below average strength.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, pleasant, a biteen overcarbonated, medium-bodied, and aptly thick. Nice overall presence on the palate. Complements the taste well.

Not oily, harsh, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, scratchy, or rough.

TASTE: Clove and banana from the yeast. Mildly evocative wheat. Bock malts. Painfully simple for a weizenbock. Lightly bready. I do like it in a general sense, but it's incredibly boring and quite underwhelming. Lacks intricacy, subtlety, nuance, and sufficient complexity.

No hop character, alcohol, or off-notes come through.

Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour.

The banana in particular is lovely. It's a nicely balanced brew and has a cohesive build. But as enjoyable as it is, this build isn't gestalt.

OVERALL: An enjoyable weizenbock with some lovely yeast notes - especially the evocative banana - but the lack of full fresh wheat holds it back, as does the absence of masterful balance and notable subtlety. It hides its ABV quite well and I'll easily kill the bottle, but I can't say it's anywhere near world-class. Definitely worth trying. I'm glad I tried it.

Pours very cloudy, pale orange-brown body topped by medium-sized (for a weizenbock) beige short-lived head that completely dissipates. The apperance is a complete failure - head should be thick, persitent and I expected the body to be darker, however, cloudiness is true to the style. Aroma is dominated by banana esters (further accentuated by hint of bubblegum) with clove-like phenols and alcohol in the background, all wrapped in malted-wheat sweetness with bready notes. I miss rich melanoidins reminiscent of Doppelbock and dark fruits of specialty malts. The alcohol gains strenght as the beer warms. The medum-full bodied beer is sweet and fluffy on the palate, very airy yet retaining creaminess. Bready and sweet from malted wheat with yeast-derived spiciness, and with more dark fruit and less banana than shown in the aroma section. However, I still miss bock-like melanoidins. The finish is rounded by warming alcohol. Hops are virtually absent and show up only as low supportive bitterness. Overall, reminds me of Vitus but there is a gap between the two.
