Bought a bottle of this from Isetan in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Poured into a pint glass. The light green bottle was a turn-off from the beginning, and the brew itself was a bit boring looking. A light gold-grass color that hinted at the taste to come. Grass is the best way to describe it with a bit of apple (right on, Alstrom bros). I'm not a lager drinker, and I found this one sat better than some other unfortunate lagers i've had, but it was nothing spectacular. Also, the bottle labels this as a "blonde ale" which confused me a bit. Overall, it is a drinkable brew, but not one I would pass around to show off.

A fizzy yellow beer from a former portuguese colony in China - I was not expecting much and was pleasesd to see that my minimal expectations were in fact met. Sadly' they were not exceeded. It was in fact the only game in town at the Four Seasons Macau. That said - it was hot, sticky and generally disgusting weather-wise in Macau and a grainy, lightly hopped, cold beer hit the spot on more than one occasion. I had this on tap, in a bottle and it was all consistently average to drink and still somehow refreshing. Would I purchase this outside of Macau? Nope. But it did the trick when refreshment was called for.
Taste was light and grainy, hopping was minimal and the body was light and fizzy. It was a quencher but left an odd aftertaste reminiscent of a typical macro lager.

Well, I've never had a beer from Macau, so why not? Unfortunately, it did not start off well. Body was clear and pale yellow, with only a very thin film of head that dissipated really fast. It was fizzy and noisy, like Alka-Seltzer.
Aroma was corn sweetness and a bit of hops. Much to my surprise, it didn't seem skunky in the slightest. Maybe the corn overpowered it, or maybe they didn't add enough hops to turn.
Taste was corn, and that's about it. It was only slightly sweet, not as all as much as the aroma would lead one to believe. Overall, it was stunningly unremarkable. There was no skunkiness.
Mouthfeel was thin, yet it was kind of syrupy. It reminded me of a cough syrup that had been watered down.
Drinkability - nasty. I wouldn't have it again, and I would actively warn others to stay away. Not the worst, but close to it.

Bottle thanks to Eric. Pours a clear golden color with a small white head. The aroma was quite skunky; hell, this smelled kinda like weed really. The taste is really smooth and not bad; smooth and watery malts and some light corn. Basically water-like. Not bad, but really light and mild.

Basically this whole beer is what you would expect from some random country. Clear straw color. Basically nothing in the way of flavor. Though this one is fairly smooth and has no real harsh characteristics. I won't say I didn't enjoy it. It was good enough to join my dumplings at Dumpling Man in the East Village. Is it worth seeking out? No. But hey. I tried it, and why not.

The beer leaves the 12-ounce bottle a clear gold with a decent creamy white head that settles quickly leaving the lace to form a thin but cover sheet. Nose has a sweet malt aroma, not much else, start is sweet with malt and a touch of bitterness at the back, top is light. Finish has a fair acidity, the hops conventional, sweet dry aftertaste lingers on, another environmental beer, tolerable, and a fair palate cleaner.

11.2 ounce bottle from a Cost Plus World Market "Beer of the World" collection purchased summer, 2007, and tasted October 2007. The label is different than the one shown, a black and gold label with stylized waves(?) and stars with a red "Macau" and "Cervejaria de Macau".
Pours an incredibly pale yellow- light beer yellow. No head, one or two bubbles per minute make up the entire amount of carbonation.
Aroma of cooked corn and other vegetables, and light but definite oily hops. Flavor is that of a gentle, mild, euro pale ale. More malt than hops, this is a basic lawnmower beer- but there are so many other lawnmower beers that actually have flavor. It's not bad, but there's not much to it. The best word I can think of is "inoffensive". But that's not saying much.

Macau Beer pours a pale yellow color with a white head from a green 11.5 ounce bottle. The aroma is grainy and grassy with a touch of skunk. The taste is also grainy and grassy. It's not as bad as I feared, but there really isn't anything to recommend it either.

Had a pint of this on tap at the Sands Casino in Macau (where else?)
Pretty much your typical random euro-style lager. Not quite as pale in color as some other regional varieties (Pearl River, I'm looking at you). Decent head, little retention or lacing. Smell is very adjuncty - bad, with some grain. Flavor is better than the aroma, but not by much. Lacks any real offensiveness. Mouthfeel is light and fizzy. Drinkability is low. The same bar was serving Rochefort 10 - guess what we switched to after this one?

Pours a three finger white head that fades quickly leaving no lace. Crystal clear pale amber color. Very light carbonation and light-medium bodied. Grassy nose. Starts sweet, lack of carbonation makes this taste like a fruit drink, seems to lack hops. Would make a good lawn mower beer. Bought this only to add a new country to my collection. $1.50 for a 330ml bottle from Liquid Solutions Tigard, Or.

Bleached corn yellow with a single stream of superfine bubbles jumping off the bottom of the glass. The cap falls just short of bright white in color and is on the airy, insubstantial side. It doesn't deflate rapidly (but doesn't last long either) and doesn't look especially fetching while doing so. The glass is almost completely lace-free. Not a good start.
The nose doesn't bring the excitement either. Its biggest problem is that it doesn't smell very beer-like. There's a mild whiff of grain that has been stored too long in plastic containers... and very little else. I suppose that I should be thankful that it's in the 5% of Chinese beer that doesn't contain formaldehyde, but I'm not feeling very thankful at the moment. Is it possible that the beer is at least decent on the palate?
That depends how one defines decent. By my definition, it is. Barely. The biggest positive is a lack of offensiveness; never a certainty when dealing with Asian pale lagers. My liver would like to take this opportunity to thank the brewery for keeping the chemicals out of Macau. My taste buds concur, but request a tad more flavor.
The beer tastes like lightly sweet, untoasted corn with no hop presence to speak of. There's very little bitterness to be had, just grain-like flavor that dissipates as soon as it registers. In fact, it's the very definition of easy drinking, as long as flavor isn't high on your list of gotta-haves. Need to wash down food from that great new Macaunese restaurant? No problem.
The body/mouthfeel is lighter than light, but is still well-suited to the beer as a whole. Given the purpose for which it's most suited (mass consumption after hot, backbreaking labor), any more mouthfeel would be too much mouthfeel.
Macau Beer probably benefits by being the 'United Nations' of Asian lagers. It uses German malt, Australian hops, American brewing equipment and Japanese brewmasters. It could still use a great deal of help. More flavor would be a good place to start.

11.15 oz green bottle with no freshness date.
A- Thin lacing, half way decent retention ... clarity is fine with a pale yellowish hue.
S- Grassy cooked hop aroma with some green apple in the back end. Faint grain ... otherwise a clean nose.
T&M- Semi-crisp in a moderate body, a tad slick on the tongue. Lots of cooked hop flavor that comes up as very grassy, pungent green apple skin like flavor slightly puckers the mouth. Mild sweet graininess in the back with a semi-dry finish.
D- Run of the mill Euro-Style Lager. 100% Formaldehyde-free seems to be their only saving grace. Either way I'd pass on this one being that there are many other lagers out there that are better.
