The Total Wine in North Hills has moved to where the old Harris Teeter used to be. The store is now much larger and far better organized. The staff, however, is still the same grouchy, unhelpful staff it’s always been. Most Total Wines in the area have their bottle selection organized by brewery in alphabetical order with imports in their own section. Here they have imports separate as well, but have the bottles broken up by style. Each style is clearly marked and a decent amount of shelf space is provided. It seems that the bottle selection has even gotten a little larger. As usual they have a selection of bombers near the registers and on aisle displays throughout the store. The staff seems to get frustrated when asked about a beer ‘s availability, but overall this store has greatly improved.

A- Mostly wine, but there are a few long rows of beer. Generally clean and such.
Q- Other than a general lack of refrigeration dedicated to beer, there didn't seem to be any quality issues in my visits.
Ser- This was a downside. Rarely does anyone volunteer to help you, and I've had to wait (in excess of a couple minutes) several times at the register for someone to ring me up.
Sel- Tons and tons of bottles, both singles and six packs. Selection is better than what I'm used to, and a fair amount of local stuff.
V- A little spendy, but all things considered, not bad.

Normally I try to stay away from Total Wines since most of them have a relatively mediocre selection and issues with freshness but this one is an exception to that rule. They are pretty good about getting the latest seasonals and special releases and I've even seen stuff at this location that the mighty Sam's Quick Shop doesn't have (Pike Brewery beers for instance). You will also find rarities like Hopslam and Devil Dancer here when they are released but they sell out incredibly quickly. This place has become my favorite beer store in Raleigh, aside from Whole Foods.

Edit (11/22/10): Total Wine has started inking exclusive distribution deals with several brewers (Diamond Knot, Flying Fish, Pike Brewing) that has added another dimension to this store, and they are getting better about carrying seasonals/special releases that other stores in Raleigh aren't getting. Still not as good as Sam's but probably the best beer selection in Raleigh now. Their service score is taking a hit though because they are consistently rude to me when I try to call about availability of beers.

Large selection of beers that I can't seem to find in many other stores (outside of specialty beer bars). I also like the large mix and match section, which is conducive to me getting to try as many beers as possible.

A slight downside, however is the lack of refrigeration space. The few beers that they do have refrigerated are not the kinds of beer that I would go to Total Wine to purchase, since I could get them pretty much anywhere.

Other than that, I have been impressed with their selection and how well stocked they stay.

Located in the same shopping complex as our hotel, it was worth a walk over. Mainly a wine store, I was pleasantly suprised by the large number of beers available. Lots of macros in the cooler, but happy to see 2 aisles of imports/micros/craft beer. Very large selection of individually priced singles to build your own 6 pack. Way bigger than any selection I have at home. Everything seemed to be fresh (if it had a b/b date). I especially like the free printed catalogue. I could have stayed all afternoon, but settled on 6 local micros and a bomber of Double Bastard.
Will need to keep my eyes open for more of this chain store.

Back again Jan. 2011, same great selection of singles (made my own 6 pack again. Suprised to see a bunch of Laughing Dog beers

Wow this store has a ton of wine. If only they had as much beer as they do wine. Still, this place has a pretty decent selection of singles. Especially nice import selection. If there would be one thing to improve- I think there could be some more interesting US micros. There wasn't anything that I was really excited to see or that surprised me. But still a pretty nice selection and a lot of really good beers. The cashier was friendly as well. Overall a pretty place to go for your craft beer fix.

Hit up the store with the parents...lovin' the fact that you can mix and match 6 packs, especially since it offers just about everything that the other Raleigh stores have (Peace Street, 6twelve, etc).

Cashier was cordial and complimented me on my choices, so that was cool. He also told me they get a pretty steady supply of new seasonals and to look for the Spring seasonals soon. Price is a little on the high side, but not unreasonably so. Definatly a decent place to shop around and get some quality brews.

EDIT: Quality is an issue, always check the born-on dates of your beer if it has one, or choose a beer that's hiding in the darnkess, as old beers are left to become light-struk on the shelves until they are bought.

This place is right on the way to the (soon-to-be) in-laws. So whenever we head on over there for dinner I usually stop in for something to drink other than th offered vodka or chardonnay.

Beer is in the two aisles in the far corner from the doors. Nice selection with a surprising number of imports. Domestic micros seem to be added everytime I stop in. Everything I looked at was within date and not too dusty. They also offer singles for pretty much all the packaged offerings. However, these seem to look a bit aged. Never seen a huge selection in the coolers that are ready to drink so I usually have to plan on having at least one vodka while my beer cools.

Service is professional. I have yet to meet anyone who works there that knows anything about the beer. And have been told on two separate occasion that I am a beer geek and how annoying beer geeks are. However, they do have a printied catalogue of all the beers they can have delivered which is nice and they make a point of always throwing it in my bag.
