Black with ruby red highlights on edges and a full creamy light brown head, good carbonation, and good lace. Roasty aroma dominates -- espresso-like at first but then turns a bit sweet. Nice roasty flavors. Medium-full bodied and creamy smooth with a lightly dry roasty finish.

Deep mahagony brown in color that poured silky smooth into my stemmed glass. Thinning head of tan creamy foam didn’t last too long. The aroma is pretty incredible with nice doses of caramel, charcoal, oak, licorice and dark roasted almonds among other things. Very nice. The taste is smooth and somewhat velvety in texture. Good body – the dark and complex richness compliments this medium bodied beer in beautiful ways. A smooth chocolatey bittersweet coating remains on the tongue – enticing you to take another sip. Full in flavor, but not overwhelmingly heavy. This really seems like a beer for Kings and dignitaries. It’s complex enough for sure, but there’s more than that going on here. Maybe I’m over-analyzing, but I believe, in its own way, this beer has something special to offer each and every beer lover. A gorgeous beer.

Absolutely "worth a try"

Deep BLACK color with creamy rich head perfect carbonation This beer fill's your mouth with a creamy texture as the CO2 tingles your pallet. With a nice subtile aroma the flavor is a rich carmel (with hint of toffee?) Taste is overall clean with only slight bitter hop taste. (275 characters)

The color is deep, dark, and black. There are hints of ruby highlights and a light-brown, dense head. Nice looking brew. The aroma is notable: chocolate, roasted, toasted malts (black patent?). It's the kind of thick, intense aroma that hangs with you. The beer is relatively heavy and mouthcoating, with a hint of smoke and oil in the taste. Very smooth, and extremely creamy. The sweetness is very restrained. Finish is moderately bitter. Excellent. I'm glad that I found this one. (483 characters)

A: Pours a dark brown, near black body with a thin, sticky tan head.
S: Pretty dang sweet but not cloying. Strong smells of cream, toffee and milk chocolate. Also some sweet doughy smells.
T: All the smells cross over into the flavor. Milk chocolate is the predominate flavor. Kind of reminds me of a Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout, though I still prefer the latter. Also some hints of pine toward the end.
M: Creamy, silky, and smooth. Pretty low carbonation, and enjoyably so.
D: Definitely would like to have more than one of these. Haven't seen them in bottles but will have to look around for a 6-pack. (604 characters)

Blackwatch is a very dark brown porter with a strong taste that approaches a stout. It has an almost smokey flavor. The very nice amber head looks great with the deep walnut color, and the porter taste was quite refreshing. I think you should give it a try. (257 characters)

Pours a dark, dark brown with a solid brown head. Smells like a decent porter, with a malty roasted barley smell.

Taste is decent, not quite as rich as an English porter, but typical of an American porter. Smokey, roasted taste with hints of chocolate. A slight metallic tinge, but this doesn't really detract from the taste.

Mouthfeel is good. Not watery, or too thick. Easy to drink several of these in one sitting. (423 characters)

You know when you first saw a marshmallow being burnt to a crisp by somebody whilst you twirled yours round and round and watched it grow darker and darker from yellow to tan to brown and finally explode into flame and you felt betrayed? That is until after several lost attempts and you finally tried the burnt marshmallow and found goodness within it. That's what these porters are like. You first look at them and think they are a sort of beefy soup when you've been accustomed to golden dainty ones all your life. Then you have one and they are beefy but with that burnt sweetness of a marshmallow. There ain't no sorrow in learning the hard way. Great rewards come from having been burnt. Just ask Lazarus. (711 characters)

This is a beer that I always come back for more of. It's a creamy, robust brew that never fails to impress me each time I drink it. It's very reliable in it's richness and taste. It has a nice creamy, coffee/chocolate taste to it, that is unparalleled by any other. I would rate this is one of the better porters around. If your looking for a solid porter that's creamy and refreshing, look no further. (402 characters)

The beer poured black and thick with ruby highlights at the bottom of the glass. The head was tan and left quickly, but laced the glass.

The aroma was chocolate, coffee and roasted grains.

The flavor was chocolate and coffe with a very slight sweetness that balanced the dark grains.

The finish was off dry chocolate and coffee with pleasantly lasts into the finally dry aftertaste. The body was meidum full and definitely creamy.

A nice creamy lightly sweet porter that invites you to drink more. This beer has a brownish white head and a creamy sweet aroma. Yet the taste is tart and creamy that ends up finishing a little sweet. There is a light bitterness that complements the maltiness. (260 characters)

A- Black with a large dark brown sugar colored head. Head dissipates to a foamy covering and leaves a dense lacing.

A- Roasted malts and a bready creamy aroma.

T- Incredibly smooth tasting, the bottle mentions the use of oatmeal and wheat. Very smooth and sweet with roasted malts and a coffee flavor in the back and aftertaste. The creamy smoothness makes this almost like drinking coffee, quite interesting.

M- Medium bodied low carbonation. Incredibly smooth, almost like a nitro-stout smoothness(but smoother!)

D- Delicious. This beer is so amazingly smooth, I recommend trying it. (589 characters)

Had this on tap at Henry's.

The presentation of this beer is excellent. Its a solid black cylinder with a suggestively dark brown head. It certainly well intentioned in its appearance.

The aroma is smokey but simple.

The taste is a smooth concoction of chocolate malts, burnt coffee grounds, and has a nice nuttiness as well. It stands out on its own as a pleasing and drinkable beer, but really must be paired with the right kind of food. It doesn't match seafood well, but does terrific with a burger or a Reuben.

Its very drinkable, and is very satisfying. A definite high point in Mac's line. (610 characters)

I really enjoyed this beer. I'm starting to realize I've got a whole Sybil thing going on...I like fruity wheat beers, and I like porters...go figure.

Anyway, this cream porter poured a thin brownish head. Very dark brown in color.

Scents of roasted malt in the nose. No lacing. Very smooth mouthfeel, buttery comes to mind.

Hints of malt and bitter chocolate in the smooothe finish. (386 characters)

Two words for this one; good stuff. The color is the shade just before black, dark, dark, brown. The head on this one was only about 1/2 inch and faded quickly. Patchy lace that slowly faded. Big coffee/ toffee flavor hits you first then chocolate, then a smokey finish. Clean, crisp, finish. Good stuff. (304 characters)

Appearance: This was a black beer that just barely gave way to the light when I held it up to a lamp. The dense, tan head rose up nice and big, taking a long time to dissipate into a thin layer over the top of the brew. It left a respectable amount of lace on the glass.

Smell: When smelled from the glass, the aroma of this beer was very faint. There were just some mild, roasted notes. From the bottle, smells of dark chocolate, bitter coffee, and a spicy smokiness (beef jerky) were present.

Mouthfeel: A smooth, creamy beer. However, it was too light bodied for a porter in my opinion.

Taste: This was a mild, easy drinking porter. Just because it was mild, though, doesn't mean that it wasn't flavorful. Up front there were light chocolate and cream tastes. Some coffee notes came through in the middle, and then a stronger smoke and dark roasted malt flavor kicked in for the finish. There was a small hops tingle on the tongue, but that was the only appearance that they made in this beer.

This was a very nice, mellow porter. (1,045 characters)

Very deep brown, almost black, with mahogany & ruby highlights topped by a creamy tan head that holds well and leaves some limited lace. The aroma is of sweet dark malt. The body is medium and nicely creamy in the mouth. The flavor is caramel-like, with a mild chocolate character and a very subtle roastiness. There's a slight hop flavor; and a well balanced bitterness. Finishes with lots of lingering cocoa. Very nice and quite enjoyable. (441 characters)

Initial appearance would be a mohogany-black hole. If properly decanted (with a little help) it shows-off a creamy-creamy head; somewhat comparable to a "Guiness-Latte". Very apparent coffee/ toffee flavors are present. I sense generous additions of chocolate malt and flaked barley, offering a very smooth graininess.

There is an unusual flavor perceived during exhalation through the nose... One that pulls you back for another taste, almost a pine nut like character. Hop flavor is present but controlled in just the right proportion. "Blackwatch" is very much at home in front of the Fireplace... (603 characters)

The beers empties from the brown stubby bottle a soot black, the head smallish and tan in color, the texture semi-creamy. Nose has a nice roasted grain aroma, sweet and seems to me a hint of vanilla, start is lightly sweet, the grain presence adequate and the top light to moderate in feel. Finish is easy going on the acidity side, the hops personable in their spiciness, pleasingly dry aftertaste that lingers long, an easy drinking beer that I really should sample more often, but damn, so many good beers, just one mouth! lol (529 characters)

This beer pours a dark brown with a somewhat dark tan head. The head fades slowly leaving thick laces. It smells malty and smokey. It also had slight coffee scents to it. It tasted very creamy. It had a strong roasted malt flavor to it. Also, it has an espresso taste to it. This beer is medium bodied. It goes down smooth, leaving a malty aftertaste on the palate. The flavor of this beer is quite mild and non aggressive. This beer would make a good session beer because it has a non aggressive flavor and a relatively low alcohol content. It is carbonated just right. It is definately worth a try. (600 characters)

When I crack this one open my first whiff I get strong malt smell. As I smell some more I get a bit of chocolate as well. I give it a taste, it has nice carbonation, feels very nice in the mouth. Has a good malt taste with slight creaminess to it. I have had some bad porters and this is not one. An easy drinker for a porter. It didn't really weigh me down as some porters do. I will always go for one of these when I get an urge for a decent porter. (451 characters)

This beer poured a dark black with a average had that receded into a thin coating. The smell is a mellowed out smokiness. The taste reveals tons of this smoke flavor. There is also an incredible smoothness to this beer. A very drinkable porter. One of the finest examples of a porter. Reccomended!! (298 characters)

Given the wide swing on reviews of this beer, I have to wonder if perhaps there is a problem with consistency in the brewery's production. My experience with this porter was quite positive. Dense and rich, with nice roasted notes. Some coffee and dark chocolate, but these were background flavors. It certainly did not strike me as a love-it-or-hate-it beer. (362 characters)

Four oh's across the board! Great black color wth no head to speak about. Oily finish on the top with hints of coffee/espresso and a slight alcohol aroma but nothing too harsh.. This is a fantastic mix of oatmeal and malted barley. Creamy with a little bite but short lived due to the slight chocolate finish. I think I may try this as a marinade sometime. (356 characters)

Color pours a dark brownish black, settles to a very opaque black, no head was produced but some residual tannish bubbles arrived around the edges and has some small stringy patches of lace. Aroma is blackened malts and very roasty burnt-like, slightly robust and earthy like wet soil, with a nice deep coffeeish/espresso backing thats all pretty soft but not in a light aspect. Taste is mildly robust and smooth of deeply roasted-blackened malts, good sweetish tangy bitterness with a slight hop twinge and dryness. Gets a bit of espresso taste and feel quality in there but nothing to potent. It could use a bit more oompff, its pretty mellow, smooth, and easy. Just enough flavor and tangyness to keep me sippin'. Feel is a bit light, but close to medium body, smooth & pretty creamy and coats nicely with a light popcorn-like airy, partially tangy dryness on the top of the mouth and the tongue in the finish. Pretty decent porter, I wouldn't pass it up if offered. (969 characters)
