My go-to shop as a downtown Indy dweller. cheap-as-dirt prices, mix-and-match sixers and a halfway decent selection.

You like shopping in a liquor shop with bulletproof glass, door locks to keep you out so you have to talk to the attendant to get what you want...you like that? Of course you do. Don't lie to yourself.

Seriously they do have a good selection of local (Indiana) brews and some more famous and tasty domestic craft brew, including Dogfish, Brooklyn, Bell's and Goose Island.

However, be weary of the possibility of picking up a beer lots older than its freshnees date. I'm just sayin'.

UPDATE: What was I thinking not giving the service more dap? The workers are bomb, will order what you want, and the owner is cool as all get out. I love this shop, warts and all!

This place doesn't show well -- a strange layout, bullet proof glass in the entryway and ancient coolers tell you this place was opened in a different era of downtown Indy -- but the selection is surprisingly good for what's basically a neighborhood liquor store. Breweries are typically given one row in a cooler with several styles stacked up. If you see the brewery but not the style you're looking for, start digging. Bomber selection is pretty limited, but there are some good things to be found. Make sure to hit the back room where all the Bell's and Unibroue is stocked.

Prices are fantastic. Typically about $1 per six pack less than any other liquor store in town. I'm not sure how they pull that off given how small they are. Mixed 6-packs are welcomed and even encouraged and they don't charge a premium for that (some checkout people actually calculate it, some just eyeball your selections and barter a price with you....sometimes for less $$ than it should be). There's also a small but respectable selection of wine.

This fortified liquor store was the closest one to my hotel. The cooler selection seemed fairly average and didn’t reflect rapid turnover. There were at least two different Christmas beers available in May. Certainly local craft brews are available, but I hoped for something more, and better prices than $9 a six pack. There was a shelf of single serving german imports with reasonable pricing. Beer used to be cheap in the Midwest. What happened?

I was short on time, and didn't get too freindly with the staff so I can't report on the treasures of the back room.

I was pleasantly surprised by this tiny hole-in-the wall establishment. Despite the store's small size, the selection is simply fantastic! 6 coolers, 5 of which are filled with excellent, excellent beer (the other one is devoted to macros). While only one cooler is devoted to singles, the workers are kind enough to sell any beer individually, so, really, if you see a beer and want it, go for it. The price is reasonable, about what I've seen around Indy, not a deal, but not a rip-off either.
The employees are also unfailingly kind. One of them in particular, an older gentleman, has been able to give me some very sound advice on beer. The owner is also very nice, indeed, she even lets me wander around the back room looking at boxes and boxes of beer. The selection in back is even better than their selection up front! Ask politely and I am sure they will accomodate your needs.
Highly recommended.
