I hold porters to a high standard (see Atlantic Brewing Company's Coal Porter).
This falls a bit short.

Pours a nice dark black/brown with a thick tan head that dissipates quickly leaving no lace. Smells dark, but nothing stands out. Taste is burnt, a little coffee, a little smoke and a hint of anise (? or coriander). But the mouthfeel is way too watery with no cling to your palate - rather leaves a bubbly feel like a lighter beer should. There is a sharp pugency about it that reduces it's drinkability. Bought a 650ml - so will try some later at a colder temp. (571 characters)

22 oz. Bomber brought back w/ me from Front Street Ale House (WA to NC!), poured into a DFH off-centered pint glass.

A vigorous pour produces a nearly black, nearly opaque liquid topped by a quickly receding wisp of light tan foam. The body pours thick and the color is attractive, but the lack of head retention and lacing is disconcerting. Thick toffee and caramel afloat in the aroma, but the smell is more like a synthetic chocolate note that just didn't work the way the brewer's wanted it. Some soy sauce, smoke, and floral notes feel a bit out of place.

The taste is an acrid, acidic blend of smoke, bitter chocolate, salty soy sauce, and some kind of medicinal phenol. Aftertaste is truly awful, and although the body is decently carbonated, it's thin, watery, and leaves a sour "spoiled-milk" finish on the back of the tongue. This beer is really a shame, as every other brew I tried from San Juan Brewing Co. was quite good and creative (BACON BEER! Who does that?) and I'm wondering if it's just a case of an infected batch unleashed on the unsuspecting public. I certainly hope so...a real drain-pour. (1,115 characters)
