During a recent visit to Tuscaloosa for a football weekend, my son and I stopped in on a Thursday night for some beer. We stayed on the first floor and did not venture upstairs. The first floor had a nice outdoor area along with an open indoor area with scattered tables and a medium sized bar. The atmoshere was average with a mushroom voodoo theme. I wasn't sure what the small canopy area with two double seat gliding chairs and a TV was all about.
The beer menu was decent with about 15 beers listed on tap, an average bottle selection with a few local southern beers with a scattering of west coast and northeast selections. The problem was they didn't have many of the beers on the list. So after numerous "sorry we are out of that one" we finally asked what do you have and they had very little selection.
The young lady serving tried very hard, so I rated her a 3.0, however, she and others working there had no beer knowledge.
The second round took 30 minutes to get our beer and they weren't that busy. To their credit they did give us our second beers on the house, so we ordered a third.
If you ordered a bottled beer, you had to ask for a glass.
Unfortunately after a weekend in Tuscaloosa this was probably the best place to enjoy a beer if you didn't want to drink the bud or coors.
Ok I know we were in the South, but it appears the craft beer revolution has not yet reached Tuscaloosa. So enjoy the football and bring your beer.

Mellow Mushroom is a pizza place that has a good variety of beers available. The pizzas are tasty, and not terribly expensive when split between 3 or 4 people. They have a good selection of beer on tap, plus some more in bottles. The atmosphere is great. It's located in a typical downtown building with exposed brick and high ceilings.
The service is pretty good. The waiters don't know much about beer, but are very friendly and knowledgeable about the food. The pizzas are great. I recommend the redskin potato pie. Delicious! This is a popular place for students, and the crowd can get a bit annoying, but it is far from the worst place in town.
One thing that I really like about this place is the music. They play classic rock nonstop, and it just sets a great vibe. Mellow Mushroom is definitely on my short list of restaurants with good beer and food in this town.

I was in Tuscaloosa for the day with my wife and a couple friends, so we decided to stop in for a casual dinner at Mellow Mushroom. I have eaten at a Mellow Mushroom before, but only in the beer wasteland of Mississippi.
The food is always great and the atmosphere in Tuscaloosa is particularly fun and laid back. The service was also very good.
The beer selection looked pretty good. I counted about 15 or so taps, but there may have been more. I had my first (and second) Delerium Tremens there, which was excellent. They had a great selection of bottle beers too.
Definietly a fun place to eat and hang out. I would be a regular if we lived here.

Moved to Tuscaloosa about a year ago from DE and it has been really tuff finding good craft brew in the area. We have found only two venues doing their best to serve a wide variety of craft beers and not just the normal stuff. Mellow Mushroom has a fair selection of local beers and some west coast and east coast brews. As for the atmosphere my wife and I love it. Very laid back, lots of space between tables so you don't feel like they're trying to cram everyone in to make the bucks. There are three levels, the exposed brick which is predominate in most of the venues in downtown Tuscaloosa give it a bit of character. We didn't go upstairs so I can give any type of description. The food was excellent! They try to put their own twist on anything they serve. I had the "Italian Hoagie" while my wife chose "The White Rabbit" pizza for herself. Both tasted like all the ingredients were fresh and full of flavor. We will definitely be making this a regular stop for us.

Stopped back here while on a recent trip for business. It had been a while since I've been in T-town and it was great to stop back here as the pizza is great, and the establishment seems to have grown quite nicely and they have quite the tap list.
Atmostphere: Tries to be like San Francisco and hip, but it suits the place and it's cool as it's more kitschy than anything else. It's non-smoking on the inside, so that's a definite plus and the outdoor seating is very nice as it's on the side street and away from the traffic of University Boulevard. It's mostly quiet inside and there are TVs at most angles as well, so one can keep up with the various sporting events.
Quality: I'm a little torn here... I had two offerings while there: a Terrapin Rye Pale Ale and a Good People Coffee Oatmeal Stout. The first one tasted like it came out of a dirty tap, well, that or from a really old keg. The second was quite good... Hard to say, but overall, the selection of offerings was great and I bet they had 30 taps of beers from across the nation and overseas (Terrapin, Rogue, Chimay, Sweetwater, etc.).
Service: The servers don't seem to know a ton about the beer, but they're at least familiar with the various styles, and the one bartender that I spoke to really seemed to know his stuff. I'd like to give it a slightly higher rating, and if all of the servers were more trained in this capacity, it would receive one. It's not as if they didn't do their jobs well though - very friendly, food came out promptly, drinks were kept filled, so it's all good.
Selection: As mentioned above, there were like 30 taps, plus a selection of bottles in the coolers, and they came from all over. Not much more can be asked for.
Food: Great pizza! The appetizers are really good too, and I recommend the garlic and butter pretzels -- damn, typing this is making me hungry.
Value: Reasonable - it's not as if they're going to gouge you on the prices and you definitely get what you pay for. I know when I get back to Tuscaloosa, I'll definitely be planning one of my meals here.

Went here for lunch & a beer with a group, though I've been here many times in the past, too.
I was downstairs at the restaurant, so I can't review the upstairs bar. Downstairs the beer list was very solid. They had plenty of regional beers. I had a pint of the Yazoo Hop Project IPA which was excellent. They also had Good People Coffee Oatmeal Stout, Terrapin India Brown and one other Terrapin. They had at least one Sweetwater & Great Divide tap. There were others that looked pretty good, too. Not much high gravity & rare but a bunch of decent selections nonetheless.
Food is always good here. Nice beer atmosphere. Good place.

I only went in the downstairs portion, so I can't speak to the rest of the establishment. Went on a Monday evening, so the place was rather quiet. A small but nice selection on tap at the bar - and I was glad to see a couple of offerings from local brewers Good People, Sweetwater and Terrapin. Also Chimay on tap, which I was pleased to see dispensed into a proper snifter.
The beer tower needed some attention, as the drip tray was leaking onto the bar, and no one seemed interested in wiping it up. Some gnats were enjoying the spilled beer bonanza which was a bit of a detraction.
If you've been to a Mellow Mushroom elsewhere, you pretty much know what you are getting - good pizza in a kitchy retro-"have a nice day" dayglow theme. My chicken tortilla soup was good, but a bit on the spicy side. Hot wings were good. Ordered pretzles and they were left in the oven too long. Overall, not quite as good as other outlets on this chain.

This review is for the upstairs bar area.
They've got a ton of stuff on tap (I think almost 50 beers), but they serve everything in a plastic cup that probably isn't even 12 ounces. I bought a Sierra Nevada porter in said cup and it came with NO head on it and was ice cold. This was 4 bucks. After that I went with a pitcher of Bud Light for 3 bucks, because I wasn't going to spend another 4 on a good beer that wasn't served correctly. It's a college bar, no doubt, but the outdoor patio/terrace is a nice place to hang out, drink beer, and chill. Band's pretty loud, but if you're outside it's tolerable. It just really pisses me off when I get my drink in a plastic cup after I payed 4 bucks for it. I'm not a toddler--I don't need a sippy cup anymore. Alas, it's Tuscaloosa.
NEW REVIEW FOR DOWNSTAIRS
Downstairs, the tap selection is inferior, but the service, atmosphere, and value are all better. Pints are served in proper pint glasses, the service is a bit better, and there's no smoke or loudness. The downstairs portion of Mellow Mushroom is a decent mid-day (read: 3 or 4 o'clock) drinking establishment in Tuscaloosa. Good beer selection, some nice menu items, and a pleasant atmosphere in downtown T-town.
