This is a good beer bar in Billings. The atmosphere is dark and kind of dirty, but other than that no complaints. A typical hole in the wall kind of place. There is a U shaped bar and some tables. The service is really good. The owner seems to know his stuff, and gets lots of quality beers from around Montana. There are about 20 taps. Some Bayern, Big Sky, and Red Lodge beers. I saw some Lienies and a couple other macros. It is right next to Carter's Brewing and the railyard (imagine that), and worth a visit if in the area. A place I would visit often if I lived in the area. It is a place that will not break the bank as well. I had a few pints for $2.50. Check it out.

I will readily cop to starting to feel the effects of my day as I approached. One look at the bartender and I realized that if I pulled any of my usual brand of b.s., he would just bend me in half backwards over his leg. I counted eighteen taps and easily thirteen of them were quality beers, most from the Mountain region. The "U"-shaped, black laminate topped bar had an industrial feel, reinforced by the aluminum high tables and chairs. I had a couple of beers and left, wishing that I could have stayed for the band that was due to play later that night. Sometimes, discretion is the better part of valor. That said, I have to agree with the original reviewer - you would be hard-pressed to find a better selection of beer elsewhere locally.

The Railyard in my opinion has to be one of the better beer bars that I've been to in the state of Montana. As far as selection goes you will be hard pressed to find a bar with as good a selection of micros as this place. Ale Works in Bozeman and the Rhino are the only other ones that I can think of that has as good a selection. They have probably 20-25 taps and a ton of very hard to find vodka's. Most of the beers that they have are regional (MT, CO, WA, OR), with probably 5-6 imports as well. Another reason I like this place is you can only get macrobeers (bud/miller etc) in a bottle they don't waste their taps on them. The building is located right along the railroad tracks on Montana Avenue, very cool older building. It is attached to the 11cafe which serves very good Indian food. The atmosphere/customers can vary quite a bit depending on whats going on any given night. Most nights of the week they have something going on such as comedy or live bands. Other than the brewpubs in town, this place is your best bet as far as good microbrews go.
