Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy |  9.50% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
A traditional scotch ale, caramel and malt sweetness dominates the palate. A full bodied ale that?s higher in alcohol content than most, making it a great after dinner sipper, but definitely not for the mild at heart.

Draft version!!!

Welcome to Manchester!!! Arrived at Manchester airport for a 1/2 marathon over in New Market. Was picked up by my bro-in-law and quickly swept away to Milly's Tavern to begin our pre-race inebriation. Bo's Scotch Ale is decent beer I would recommend for those looking for a winter warmer. The color was a cloudy dark amber with little white head that laced ok. The was a pungent alcohol nose with a hint of butterscotch. The taste was a little sweet like a hint of molasses powered by alcohol. The mouthfeel was tough for me....the high ABV...would not try to Session....but it is worth a try.

In a pint glass the beer was a dark brown color with a minimal head. It had a sweet, caramel aroma. Caramel taste, which improved as the beer warmed. The alcohol also became more apparent as the beer warmed, but didn't get in the way. Medium-bodied and easy to drink. I liked it.

From the 650 ml. bottle. Sampled on August 28, 2014.

The pour is a chestnut brown with reddish hues and a quick lived tan head.

The aroma is pungent with caramel, black licorice, and sweet malts like my favorite Scotch Ales can be.

Medium body.

The taste is barley malt forward almost like a barleywine with less fruitiness and a bitter bite to finish it off.

On-tap at the brewpub earlier today.

A: The scotch ale is a darker amber color, a dirty penny copper that remains translucent. A small head, less than a 1/4 of a finger, came with the beer.

S: The nose is malty, rich and full. Caramel comes through in full force, leading to the sweetness and the strength of the ale. Toffee pairs with the caramel, a formidable duo.

T: The Scotch ale is strong, a boozy concoction of caramel malts and toffee. The flavors are strong, concentrated and rich, and are almost too strong at times. The excessive malts, rich and filling, make finishing the ale difficult.

M: The mouthfeel is malty, chewy and bready with a great deal of booze hiding underneath.

D: The subtlety of the oatmeal stout is lost on the in-your-face strength of this Scotch ale. Good but not my choice.

Dark orange, off-white ring. Strong nut oil aroma reveals plenty of butterscotch richness, caramel, light chocolate and werthers original complete the malt showdown. Sweet, tart and candyish at first, it quickly develops a pleasant smokiness, earthy and long. Good balance in that one. Comfortable mouthfeel, medium bodied and lightly carbonated. Abusive sweetness is aptly prevented by the use of tartish hops. One of my favourites at Milly’s.

Had this over lunch on tap. Temp in the parking lot - 90+ degrees. Why a scotch ale? It's nicely airconditioned in the pub and it's one of the great beers for pub food.

A - Rich dark red color, nice tan head
S - Sweet malt - caramel / toffee.
T - Rich caramel / toffee flavor. Sweet, but not overpowering or cloying. Nicely balanced as the tastes roll across the tongue. A complimentary warming effect over the course of a pint.
M - Medium body, very velvety smooth
D - Wow, easy to drink.

Definitely getting a growler to share with friends. This is a great drinking scotch ale!

Sweet, malty smell, dark coppery color with little head
Toffee, fruity taste with a slight bitterness at the end
Mouthfeel is medium, with a tingle from the alcohol
Very good scotch ale, good for sipping. Would buy again

Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is a deep, vibrant, ruby brown coloring with a foamy, light, off-white head. Aromas of roasted, malty, and vanilla scotch blends that are extremely sweet on the nose. Flavors are rich and sweet, with a heavy cherry and earthy oak blending. Some nut and booze characteristics, also. Rich, sweet, roasted aftertaste with a smooth, slick finish. Very flavor forward, but subtly mellows as you drink. Not bad.

7/6/2005. Not a bad Scotch Ale, especially considering that I've tried a few that I really didn't like. This is definitely a strong Ale and after you have a few you'll be able to notice it. Amber colored with some head but not a lot. Aroma was sweet and malty. The flavor was caramel, malty with a tart sweetness. There are some sugary notes in there as well. High alcohol content but they do a decent job hiding it. As the beer warms a little, the alcohol is much easier to notice and it becomes a little too tart for my liking. Still overall it wasn't a bad beer.

16oz fresh sample at the brewpub. Poured dark amber and produced an inch tall head. Smelled great with lots of scotch ale aromas. All the malt you would expect, with more of a hop presence than with beers from Scotland. Taste is a continuation of the nose only with a warming effect from the 8%abv. Getting a fresh sample from any brewpub is key to getting the right carbonation and mouthfeel and Bo's was spot-on, going down very easy. Closer to Oskar Blues Old Chub than to anything out of Scotland. You have just got to love big American beers with more of everything, I sure do.

Had on tap fro the brewpub, the beer was presented to me in a basic pint glass. A ruby amber color with a slightly dirty-white head. No immediate signs of carbonation and the head quickly fades to nothing.

The smell was super heavy malt dominated with a a sticky sweetness as well. Notes of toasted grain and malt and a slight spice as well. Ample mollasses, honey, and syrup were also in the nose.

The taste was very, very sweet upfront. Perhaps the sweetest not fruit beer I have every had. Perhaps the sweetest beer I have ever had, period. A robust malty taste with a slight roasted flavor of carmel and toffee. Maple syrup and mollasses like flavors linger on the palate as well. There is a very slight fruittiness to the beer and the alcohol is totally undetecable and the beer has an uncanny smoothness to it.

A very rich and creamy mouthfeel with little carbonation.

I find myself split on drinkability. I enjoyed the beer very much but can't see having more than one at the time. So very very sweet, yet so very very good. The balance tilts a little to far to the sweet side to have this one be a great beer, but it's certainly a good one in my book.

This ale poured a red amber color with white foam. The smell was mild (sweet malt). The taste was dominated by sweet malt with some caramel overtones, and a touch of alcohol in the flavor (this batch was apparently 10% abv). The mouthfeel was sweet, smooth, and creamy. The sweetness really lingered. This ale was full bodied. The drinkability was good for this rich, sweet Scotch ale.
