On tap at Milly's on September 20, 2009. The pour was a handsome brown to black with a few highlights or ruby red when held to the light. It was topped with a thin foamy tan head. I was a little disappointed in the aroma as it really did not come across very strong. Subtle might be the better word. I noted no chocolate aroma often associated with a Porter. Still, it smelled fresh. The mouthfeel was a bit thinner than I would have liked. The taste was decently balanced between bitter and malts with a likeable hoppy finish. It was not as true to a Porter as I hoped but likeable in its own way.

Welcome to Manchester!!! Arrived at Manchester airport for a 1/2 marathon over in New Market. Was picked up by my bro-in-law and quickly swept away to Milly's Tavern to begin our pre-race inebriation. The General John Stark Dark Porter was a solid beer, but a little dissappointing. I was expecting more. The color was a real dark amber with thin head that left a good lace. The nose was very roasty and malty. Unfortunately for me, the taste lacked. I was hoping for a firm body porter. The roast and malt were there but it was like drinking flavored water. The mouthfeel was ok...wanted more body...could drink alot of it if I had to. Certainly worth a try.

I have been staring to drink porter lately and i went into milleys for the first time last night. I saw this on the menu and had to try it. Lets see how it turned out...

The head looked like chocolate mousse and the beer was very black tonight. I thought i was getting a chocolate beer...and i almost did! The nose of this beer was great, a hint of coffee and chocolate mixed in with the malts. MMM.

When i sipped this beer is was a delight. Tasted more chocolate than i ever expected in a porter. Hints of caramel and coffee as well. Quite malty with a bit of a bite but not real big. The finish was much smoother than i expected as well with a bit more bite at the end.

Overall i liked this alot and had 4 more AND bought my first Growler. 17 bucks for first fill and 8 bucks a refill, for any beer on the tap.

Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is a ruby-brown coloring with a foamy, dense, beige head. Aromas of nut, caramel, and toffee sweetly blended together. Flavors are roasted and smokey, with a solid nut sweet and chocolate backbone, and a roasted and bitter coffee highlight. Roasty and bitter aftertaste, with a rich, almost meaty character. Decent cling while you drink. Bitter chocolate and coffee in the aftertaste, also. Smooth, light, and dry finish. Very tasty.

This porter was a dark brown color, though it looked red-brown when held to the light, with some thin foam. The smell was faint malt. The taste was mostly sweet malt but with a bit of a burnt malt flavor. There was some hop bitterness in the finish. The body was medium, and the carbonation was moderate. There was a bitterness in the aftertaste. The drinkability was OK. This porter was a tad too bitter for my tastes, and the burnt flavor was a negative.

A: A dark, deep reddish-brown, nearly black, with a fluffy, toffee-colored head. Handsome as the general, himself.

S: Roasty, malty nose with hints of coffee, even dark chocolate with the resulting bitterness. The smell is very inviting and crisp.

T: True to smell, the beer is roasty-toasty caramel with the same hints of dark chocolate and maybe coffee, and a nice underlying hoppy bitterness. This is really a very nice porter--right-on for the style with a crisp, clean flavor.

M: Appropriately medium-bodied, slightly on the light side, but not too much so, and fairly sticky.

O: Even though I drink more of the Manch-Vegas IPA than the porter, this is probably Milly's best beer. It's a very nice, clean porter that is a good representation of the style. The bitterness works really well with the roasty qualities of the beer, and enjoying a few of these always makes for a good evening.
