Brought over from Australia

Appearance: watch the pour! head is aggressive with big bubblebath suds that have staying power; apricot color, very hazy, probably unfiltered

Aroma: resinous hops with some sweet citrus pairing up well - grapefruit, orange peel

Taste & Mouthfeel: intense, sharp carbonation; heady alcohol; almost medicinal pine flavour, like a mild Buckley's; metallic, tinny; very odd bitter finish, like the pith of an orange; some caramel malt lurking as balance

Overall: I find myself almost hesitating with each sip, wary of the cutting mouthfeel and astringent hop flavour; it's not a pleasant drink, gives the sense of having been boiled too long and any subtle notes removed

Maybe an effect of the travel, who knows

Tap at Beer Deluxe. From notes.

A - Poured a hazy golden colour with light carbonation coming up. Creamy, soapy one finger head. Spotty lace left and a film of retention.

S - Juicy hop, bread, some pine, citrus, honey, some sticky dates and mango. Sweet fruit as well.

T - Honey covered fruits? Boozy pineapple. A bit boozy. Less depth than the aroma.

M - Good carbonation, medium body and a dry prickly finish.

O/D - A bit rough, otherwise worth a shot. Bottled version was much better and smoother. A bit aggressive on tap.

I think this may be the first time I'm getting a review of this beer down although I have had it many times previously.

Pours a dark guava juice colour

Smell is initially overwhelmingly plastic- passionfruit seeds with some metal. This fades away to some lactic, yeasty notes; almost yoghurty. The hop contributions remind me of guava juice.

Taste is very bitter. They have thrown a lot of bittering hops into this thing. Really rivals the more bitter US takes on IPAs. It's also quite sweet with a good alcohol presence.

It has the same thing going on as with Spartacus- the bitterness seems to come both from hops and alcohol. However it is much better than Spartacus. The main difference is the mouthfeel is thinner and it's more highly carbed, although there's still lots of hop resins.

Honestly not very drinkable, and the malt presence even reminds me of a quad in some ways. However it's a very good and unique take on the style. Murrays are on to a winner with this one. Only quibble is the slightly outrageous $25 a 4-pack standard retail price.

A - Golden amber topped with two fingers of creamy white head, followed by long streaks of lace.

S - Floral and citrus hop aroma up front, then the caramel maltiness and slight alcohol hit.

T - Here it's the malt that takes over first, tannins and boozy sting follow and finally a herbal hop bitterness.

M - Moderate slick body, low to medium carbonation.

O - Even balance of malt and hop. Carries enough heat so you won't forget this is a 7.5% abv beer. I'm glad I tried it but probably won't be looking out for it in the future.

330mL bottle. Had a few times previously, but first time since the new (old) design.

Muddy-looking orange, in no small part due to a heavy haze. Two-finger slightly off-white head leaves some decent flecks of lace and a raised ring.

Indistinct citrus, tropical and vegetal hop notes over a decent sweet caramel malt background. There's definitely some tangerine and pineapple but that's all I can identify with certainty. Pretty assertive doughy yeast presence. Flashes of brandy and medicinal notes every now and again.

Taste is better. Loads of orange, grapefruit, honeydew melon and a late pine oil that helps to offset the high sweetness.

Nice even mouthfeel that coats the palate. Moderate carbonation and a deceptively strong drying bitterness.

Feels like a very well made beer but struggles for clarity, particularly in the aroma department where it feels like the hop character is muddled by the yeast and an a times overt booze presence. Not convinced about the freshness of this - tastes quite different to how I remember so keen to try again and re-review.

Another encouraging result from my modest cellaring efforts on this beer. I actually did not try on release but did sock a 750ml away for 12 months. So, no reference point but this beer looks good. Relatively mild for a DIPA across both the nose and palate. Pours with a massive foamy head that takes forever to quit. Nose shows sweet hops and some lower key sweet malts. Hops are quite settled to taste and don’t really bite at all - impact from the aging perhaps? Quite resiny. There’s also a very interesting funky brett-like character (ie dirty wine like) that kicks in the back palate.

Reviewing a seven month old sample - well stored.

Pours a treat. Deep copper colour with a magnificent cream two-three finger head, which lasts forever. Excellent lacing. The most outstanding local brew visually.

Quite strong aromas of citrus - lets say grapefruit - and pineapple, also some pine.

Taste continues with a citrus hit, which is then backed up by a wallop (technical term being used) of hops, and a powerful, but not overbearing bitterness. The alcohol is well hidden.

Mouthfeel is creamy and almost on the chewy side for body, again a delight, and the taste lingers well after the last drop. Carbonation is fine.

One of Murray's best ales, and indications that the Aus brewing scene can start to compete internationally

Reviewed from notes:
Thanks to brendan13 for sending this one to me.

appearance: golden orang with a 2 finger head that dissipates fairly quickly.

smell: pine, hops, malts

taste: dry, bittering, hops, malts

mouthfeel: mild carbonation, medium body,

drinkability: it's an alright IPA but after having the Hop Hog this is just subpar.

Cheers,

Ahhh, gushers. This never gets tired. Like many others I find it hard to pick what is "double" about this beer. the nose shows some pineapple fruity hops but not much in the way of pine-like intensity. On the palate the bitterness is quite subdued for the style and alcohol levels. Some marmalade and caramel malt finishes it off nicely. Biggish without being big. A touch of hop resin on the finish. Possibly a bit more approachable than others of the US ilk.

Note: marked here as an IPA, name suggest DIPA, will be interesting to see what I think.

Appearance - 3.5
A gentle pour results in a glass full of foam and little else. Minutes later a second attempt left a large, loose, cream coloured head over a hazy, copper coloured body. Good lacing and head retention.

Smell - 4.0
The nose is dominated by hops and yeast. Lots of ripe fruit - grapefruit and pineapple, a little pine needle, some spiciness and dusty yeast.

Taste - 3.0
First off, one taste of this beer puts it firmly in the DIPA category for me. Alcohol presence is big, warm, peppery and medicinal to the point of being a flaw. Sweet, fudgy malt character, grapefruit, spicy and piney hops, red apple, assertive bitterness and lots of sour yeast flavour that reminds me of Coopers.

Mouthfeel - 3.5
Fine carbonation is very lively (perhaps too lively), giving a rather Belgian-like mouthfeel. Medium bodied, could stand to be a bit lighter.

Drinkability - 2.5
A struggle for me due to the over-carbonation, booziness and unwelcome sourness.

OVERALL - 3.3
I have to say that I did not really enjoy this beer. It was well inside its expiry and had been stored in the fridge since leaving the bottle shop, but I still think it was somehow spoiled. I'll be interested to try it again to see if my opinion changes.

This brew pours a see through amber hue with decent carbonation that leaves behind a frothy two finger head that stays with heaps of lacing, the smell is definately what you expect from this style with orange, grapefruit, stonefruit and pine needles all on the nose,it has a nice above medium bodied sticky mouthfeel which leaves your lips very sticky with pine resin and taste is spot on with hints of piney hops, grapefruit,a tiny touch of caramel and finishes with a stonefruit bitterness, overall i really enjoyed this brew as it feels like they really got the balance of hops and malts near on perfect even though the hop taste outweighs the very well hidden malt character it really does work and will definately buy this brew again.
