Murray's 'Wild Thing' Imperial Stout was inspired by the great stouts favoured by the Russian Imperial Court. A massive, intense drinking experience. The colour is black. Totally black. Impossible to see through even when held up to the light - nothing insipid about this beer.

Aromas of strong dark chocolate, a little fruitiness from the hops and yeast and some rumminess from the alcohol. The flavour is an intense hit of mocha - bitter dark chocolate bordering on coffee. Some malt sweetness but an aggressive hop bitterness and roast grain bite to balance. And then there's the mouthfeel... Full bodied is an understatement. Massive mouth-fillling malt that almost overwhelms, before the freight train of the bitterness from the hops and the roast acidity kicks in to clean up the palate.

Thought an imperial stout was in order in honour of the royal wedding - enjoyed April 29th.

Poured into a red wine glass. Deep near-black, leaves a thin mocha head, recedes to a fine ring which makes some sheets of lacing.

Nose is dark coffee malt, cream, currant.

A tasty, rich stout, with big hearty coffee, chocolate, cream, dark fruit flavors, and a slightly boozy, sherry finish. Creamy feel, thicker bodied, zippy carbonation.

A fine RIS, certainly worthy of special mention from OZ. Had I been more patient, a few months of cellaring would have really done wonders. Rich, flavorful, a great slow evening sipper.

4th batch at Murrays, Bob's Farm, poured into a snifter glass.

Pours jet black, some carbonation bubbles rising within. Has a tan coloured foam that measured a finger on top. Solid head retention and lacing.

Aroma is of deep roasted malt with some chocolate. Little bit of hop presence coming through.

In your face taste. Plenty of roasted malt, liquorice, coffee and chocolate. Also a solid floral hop showing early.

Mouthfeel is smooth early, layered, even with the average carbonation this has a silky smooth feel about it and bitterness comes in late to give it some differentiation.

Interesting to taste this young with full on flavours and solid bitterness. Should keep well and will be good to see how it changes over time.

Pours black with a large, lasting dark tan head.
Nose shows dark chocolate, resinous hops, oatmeal and wood notes with solid roasted malt backing.
Very big, powerful flavours, lots of piney, resinous hops throughout, with cocoa and chocolate fudge showing up only momentarily. Boozy finish, but not over the top or hot.
Pretty bloody good but a little over-hopped for my liking.
Nice syrupy body, carbonation seems just a little high.

Black as pitch, and nicely carbonated. The head retains solidly for a few minutes before settling to a crown.

Smells appropriately roasty, charred but not burnt, neither sweet nor dry. Bittersweet chocolate comes to mind.

The palate is similarly middle of the road in all respects. Full-bodied and roasty, chocolatey in a bitter, unsweetened way. Little bit ashy and tarry, but actually quite balanced between bitter and sweet. Finishes with anise and roast, a little lingering bitterness. Pretty nice stuff, a solid no frills imperial stout.

Drank from my De Struise Tulip

A - Pours a thick Ebony oily colour with a rich two fingered tanned head that stays the course and laces.

S - Nice chocolate aromas from the bottle. Once poured has spome nice raosrted malt and a little coffee to add to the cocoa.

T - Really nice smokey licorice and dark chocolate flavours. Complimented well with toffee and coffee.

M - A little over carbonated but perfect body and very smooth

O - The best beer made in Australia that comes in a bottle.

330ml bottle. ½ Pint glass. Enjoyed on apr´12.Pitch black in color, very dark brown to the light. Lasting, small bubbled, tan head. Toasted sweet malts, ripe dark fruits, hints of chocolate, both in flavors & aromas. Oily hoppy bitterness is shown in the middle. Silky palate. Full body, soft carbonation. Bitterness, softened by choco notes, flows as an underground river through an smooth viscous malty mountain & lingers into the end with subtle acidic fruit touch. Slightly fruity aftertaste. 10% ABV! Who cares?...Good job Aussies!!!

330ml bottle poured into a hoegaarden goblet. 10%abv. best before 16/9/09 hope its still ok ;) have had this in my fridge 'aging' for a while now (thanks to a trade with um...cant quite remember who i got this from. anyway from another australian BA. so this beer is dedicated to the great community that is beer advocate, particularly those from down under).

quite black ith a seriously dark tan/brown foamy head. head formation was impressive with a good 10mm first up. understandably it settled to a thin lace rather quickly. no visible carbonation, but there could be some low level.
a thin layer of sediment left around the edge of the bottle. didnt know it was bottle conditioned so they got the carbonation just about right for the style.

intense aroma. huge coffee, roasted malt, a bit of prune/grape. slight hint of alcohol as it warms. quite well hidden considering the abv.

taste is again huge coffee. bitter aspect from the coffee/grain more so than the hops. very interesting. a bit of warming as it travels down the back of the mouth.
just a big ass stout. all the standard stout characters magnified exponentially. it does smooth out somewhat as it warms showing signs of chocolate to coat the coffee and roast.

nice to have such a big tasting beer backed up by such a big mouthfeel. really is filling and substantial and a meal in a glass. all the typical things you hear about big beers.

seriously well done. wish i had another bottle to age another year or two. though with that last sip, another bottle RIGHT NOW would be fantastic.

This pours a very dark brown with a minimal tan head.

Lots of coffee and chocolate on the nose but also some nice floral hop notes as well. Perhaps a bit of dried fruit in there as well. Yummo.

There's the 10% alcohol. Comes through strongly in the palate. A bit disappointed that it overwhelms the other flavours. Chocolate and coffee struggle to come through.

It's a bit thinner than I would like.

I was really expecting more from this. Oh well.

330 ML poured into a Great Divide tulip

A-- Poured black, almost ink black. Dark one finger brown sugar head that slowly faded away. Just a touch over film when it finished settling. Really good head retention to this when swirling. Imposing looking beer.

S-- Dark and thick. Dark chocolate, coffee and sugar. Very straightforward.

T-- Coffee, baking chocolate and more chocolate. Once again very straightforward.

M-- Thick and rich but and a bit of acidic coffee finish. Lots of bitter chocolate and coffee but at times gets a little thin. It works well though. Do get the occasional vanilla flash. Think it is still developing though. ABV is very well hidden. Low carbonation and heavy feel. Finishes a bit dry.

D-- Had two right after release (October) and one was flat. Still think it needed time to develop more and as of now quite impressed. Good RIS. ABV is well hidden, has enough chocolate and coffee to go around and has a little thinness that makes it drinkable. Was thinking while drinking it how much better this could be as a BA version. A sipper but a good sipper. Yeah drinking this in the summer. Highly suggest trying this and should be in prime condition come winter here.

A: The pour is black as far as I can tell with excellent viscosity and a sturdy brown head.

S: This is a very roasty RIS. Lots of dark, roasted malts, along with a slight char and perhaps a hint of smoke. The coffee and chocolate notes you might expect are there, but in the background.

T: The amount of coffee on the tongue is somewhat surprising, as there is quite a bit of it. Again, a lot of roasted malt and a light burnt quality. A touch more chocolate as well, which is semi-sweet.

M: The body is quite full with a medium level of carbonation, almost chewy.

D: I enjoyed this quite a bit. Not much (if any) alcohol that is detectable and a solid roasted character that is always nice in an RIS. Well done.

Dark. Deep black. Midnight - can't see through this! Quality tan head falls away to some very nice lacing.

Has some real enticing aromas to this - Dark roast coffee, deep dark chocolate and some fresh fruit aromas. Lovely stuff, not overly intense, yet complex and intriguing - everything a good RIS should be.

Normally I split up taste and mouthfeel descriptions - but not here. This beer is all about texture and balance. It is very thick, creamy and luscious with a wonderful balance between bitter and sweet characters. Can barely, only barely, feel a hint of the 10% alcohol on the finish - very spirit like at that. Tough roasted and bitter flavours on the finish mix well with black strap licorice, tropical fruit and dark chocolate coated coffee bean (real gritty like) flavours. Delicious!

Only down side is the drinkability. It isn't an "easy" drink per se as it demands chocolate or possibly even some cheese to go with it. It is very up front and raw and I have a feeling this is going to look pretty good in a years time. But at the moment one is enough (yeah, I am getting old I guess)

Good on Murray's for having a real crack at this style as this beer has upped the ante for other strong oz micro styles. Get some while you can, and if it is all gone then get some next year!

Pours a very, very opaque black hue - possibly the blackest beer that's ever blacked. Held up to one of those energy-saver fluorescent light tubes it has the slightest glimmer of glow from beyond. The head builds slowly when poured but gathers momentum for a thick chocolatey cloud of foam that sticks around. It gathers a few pockmarks here and there and sinks slowly. Leaves delicious-looking lacing. Quite lovely lacing, really. Quite lovely everything.

Nose is thick and rich with a burnt, cocoa character, very aromatic even from a fair distance. It's a delicious nose and very pungent, but also a trifle simple. It's played very loudly, but it's still just the one note. And to be perfectly frank, while it's a great example of a stouty nose, it's not really that unique.

Taste is as powerful as a a turbo-charged steamroller with a jet engine, with a sour burnt character on the front palate which in all honesty is closest in taste to charcoal. It's unusual and arresting, but it certainly doesn't make one recoil, as eating charcoal might. This is largely thanks to the mouthfeel, which is deliciously creamy as it coats the mouth and glides down the throat. The palate is a little short but there is a nice lingering and drying finish with quite a coffee touch to it. The front is a little stinging really, but it tapers off to a bold-flavoured but subtle finish, and it's really only stinging because it's so incredibly potent.

This is certainly not a beer for everyday drinking, but for a special occasion or a beer tasting - fireworks.

Syrupy Jet black with a finger of tan head.

Smells burnt toast, mollasses and chocolate syrup. not a great deal of hops.

Plenty of yeast character, burnt toast. Some spice, and plenty of chocolate. This bottle is from last year, some hops flavour, but not a great deal.

A gorgeous thick and impenetrable black pour yields an inch of a very dark and creamy tanned head. Awesome retention. Leaves behind a humble sheet atop the beer. Stunning lacing. Looks heavy in the glass.

The aroma of tropical hops and pineapple is immediate and obvious. Lemon marmalade. Muscovado sugar. Black tea. Prune juice. Rum-soaked dark fruits permeate the nose. No coffee to speak of, though there is a solid roasted malt backbone.

Bitter. Burnt toast. A clean sweetness (almost like coconut juice? difficult to describe) that leads to a nice hit of bitter dark chocolate. Balanced hop bitterness pushes through (and lingers) with a slight woody end. Cleverly hidden alcohol.

Medium bodied. Low-moderate carbonation. Cloying, coats the mouth and lips. Would've liked to see a fuller body on this beast.

Haven't been a big fan of Black IPAs or the like in the past, so I was surprised how much I like the hop presence in this stout. Superbly crafted.

Pours from the bottle in a satiny black curve, smooth as polished alabaster. Looks like a cylinder of black metal in the glass. Colour is, genuinely, black. Black as hot tar, black as a Hallowe'en Midnight, black as the unyielding void of an ocean abyss. I've never seen a beer quite so devoid of light. Head is a very thin, but sticky and fine lace of chocolate brown bubbles. Sits looking dormant but dangerous. Lacing is superb, leaving cosmic rings in the wake of the black hole. What a dark, devilish and devious drink.

Wonderful aromas on the nose, and not just the rush of ashy blackness that a beer of this depth of colour might suggest. Deep sweet hints of chocolate, malt biscuits, and rum, and an amazing lighter note of berries, tea leaves or even citrus. This leavens the fragrance, leaving it balanced superbly between the heavy cremated body of Stoutness, and the fragrant lift of floral tropical fruits. Somewhere in there is the creamy, sweet middle; delicious, luscious, but conscious of the bane of many a stout in being too solid and charred.

The overwhelming character of this beer seems to be its texture. Even before the flavours appear in the mouth, there's the silky, glistening body gliding over lips and tongue, like rivulets of quicksilver. A sweet and slick caress coats the palate, and only after the touch does one notice the rich, permeating flavours arising like fragrant wafts. The darkness is here in force on the palate though, a deep, earthy, crushed cacao-nut bitterness, being stalked by the smoky spectre of High-roast carbonised coffee bean. There's a psychosomatic crunch to the palate, as the black flakes of the charred malt seem to be ingratiating themselves into the melange.

A full sweep of dark, diabolic deliciousness. By half a glass, I can feel the demonic grip of the 10%, but my palate has detected only a delicate dissonance, a dancing drop of dark rum or brandy. Delicious.

This is a exceptional and much appreciated beer. I cannot stress enough how wonderful it is that an Australian brewery brew beers like this. If it were not a stellar example of the style, I would still be grateful to Murray's. But a stellar example this is, and worthy of all the praise that can be bestowed upon it.
