my housemate had this brew ready for me when I got off work. What a treat. anyhow this hefeweisen has a nice golden cloudy glow to it, smells grainy, like a light yeasty barley and wheat, the taste is incredible, light yet full of flavor. Very faint hints of citrus. ITs like your mouth is smelling it.
Mouthfeel is not the best attribute though overall this beer is a 4

Poured into a Celebrator pokal. Pours a light to medium golden amber with a finger of white head with great retention and lacing. Aroma of sweet wheat, lemon, banana, slightly spicy and quite pleasant.Flavor follows, with bready wheat, light lemon citrus and hints of banana. Dry, slightly buttery finish with a hint of hops. Light to medium bodied with nice carbonation. I've been spoiled by Weihenstephaner and approach new hefeweizens with caution. Even when they are good, they seem not to live up to that great beer. This one was not quite up to that flavor standard, but was not dissapointing in any way. Nicely balanced, mildly sweet start and semi-dry finish are perfect for the style. Very nice aroma and tastes great. I'll get this again.

5.2% ABV per the label on my 500ml brown glass bottle. It has a flashy label which initially turned me off to buying it; it looks like a graphic design major went batshit crazy, and doesn't exactly call to mind storied German brewing tradition. But I digress...

BB: 9/14/16 if I'm reading the odd notching system correctly. I picked up this bottle in a Carrefour supermarket in Kardamena, Kos, Greece, and the label has Greek as well as English ad Deutsche text.

Served cold and side-poured into a pilsner glass in my hotel room. Expectations are high given its current ratings.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: 4 fingers wide. White in colour. Okay complexion and consistency. Decent thickness. Not a real full, frothy, or creamy head. Leaves no lacing as it recedes. Retention is above average - about 3-4 minutes.

BODY: Cloudy bright yellow. It's not the hazy unfiltered appearance I look for in a good hefeweizen, and approximates the body of a witbier.

Not a great looking hefeweizen by any stretch, but it's above average outside of style conventions. It has my curiosity.

AROMA: Full fresh wheat, lemon zest, lemon peel, citrusy esters, banana and clove from the yeast/hefe, and clean barley. A fresh, clean, and appealing aroma of average strength. The wheat itself is lovely. I'm looking forward to the first sip. Any hop aromatics are quite tame - which is to style.

No overt alcohol or other off-notes are detectable.

TASTE: Fresh wheat, lemon zest & peel, citrusy esters, and plenty of banana from the yeast. It's pretty much the beer you'd expect based on the aroma, but the clove is much more reticent than anticipated. Interestingly, lemon zest dominates, veering this wheat beer more towards witbier territory.

It's well-balanced and has the trademark simplicity of the style, but lacks the elegance and subtleties of world-class examples thereof.

No alcohol or off-notes are detectable.

It's hard not to like. The quality of the wheat is evident, and when that's the foundation of the beer, it's bound to be good.

TEXTURE: Fresh, crisp, clean, smooth, wet, and refreshing. Light to medium-bodied. Neither too thick nor too thin. Has a good overall presence on the palate. This texture complements the taste rather well, even if the beer is a biteen overcarbonated.

Not oily, astringent, gushed, hot, boozy, harsh, scratchy, or rough.

OVERALL: It's a nice hefeweizen and I'm glad it's available in Greece, but when in Germany I doubt I'd reach for this with other superior hefeweizens on the shelf (Ayinger, Franziskaner, even Erdinger). Absolutely worth trying and very enjoyable. It's not quite the orange-peel heavy type of hefeweizen I personally prefer, but it's not the clove-laden type of hefeweizen either. More a compromise between a hefeweizen and a witbier. Very drinkable.

High C+

Gave an inverted pour from a 16.9 oz bottle into a hefeweizen glass.

Nice hazy goldenrod color with a fluffy, foamy 2" head. Settles to about 1/4", leaves persistent spotty lacing.

Smells very "wheaty", lots of fresh ripe banana, a little bit of clove- less than a lot of other hefeweizens I've had. A little bit of a sugary tang I can't quite describe. Smells nice, fresh and inviting.

Tastes of lush wheat, a little lemon, then sweet creamy banana and a touch of bubblegum. It almost tastes like banana pudding. Still, it's not too sweet. Ends with more ripe banana/pudding and some soft wheatiness.

Pretty full bodied for a hef, but soft and smooth. Nicely carbonated, but could maybe stand a bit more. Ends fairly clean.

Overall a well made and pretty well balanced hefeweizen with a bit more going on than your standard malty bananas & clove. Sells for pretty cheap around here too. Not quite as good as Weihenstephaner or Live Oak, but stands out from most hefeweizen offerings.
