If you're ever down in Winchester, Hampshire ("Jane Austen Country") and you're, perhaps, being dragged to different historical landmarks, you will likely end up at Jane Austen's house. And if, like me, you're not particularly interested in Ms. Austen's house, I have a perfect solution. Park your car in The Greyfriar's parking lot and while the Jane Austen fan(s) that you know connects with the past, you can kick back at The Greyfriar with the daily newspaper and a couple of pints of Fuller's real ales. Then you can all meet up again in the pub for a nice meal. Everybody's happy!
The beer selection is not particularly extensive. On handpump: Fuller's Discovery, ESB, and London Pride. Then the standard boring lagers, dark stuff and cider on tap, plus a selection of equally boring stuff in bottles. Also a reasonable wine selection, if that floats your boat.
It's nice and quiet there, too. No loud music, vomiting lager louts, etc (during the day at least). It's "pleasant". The decor is a bit formulaic, but quaint nonetheless. Service is the usual variation between friendly and a bit nonchalant, usually along the lines of a cute barmaid and a bloke waiter.
It can get busy around lunch time, so you might be out of luck when it comes to getting a table. They stop taking food orders at 2pm, but dinner kicks in around 5 (I say, "around 5" because I didn't actually take notice of the actual time because I've only been there during the day).
They have a non-changing menu of "pub food" (their chips/fries are damn good) and a varying menu of more impressive dishes (written on a chalk board). Many of these items sell out as the day wears on, so that's a good sign. I've only every ordered from their standard menu, but that stuff is great too.
Food prices are reasonable; the beer is on the high end of the range (i.e.- £2.75 for a pint of London Porter), but it has only been good quality when I've been there so it's probably worth it in that regard.
