Picked this up earlier this week down at the new Bottle King in Livingston. I've had so many American Double/Imperial IPA's that I didn't think that this would stand out among them. Thankfully, it did and because the alcohol was so recessed, it went down relatively easily as well. This beer has enough "Imperial" in it to live up to its name but by itself, it just feels like an IPA with a nice balance and quite a bit of booze underneath it all.

Nice pour to this, as it came out quite golden, with a hint of amber and cloudiness tossed in for good measure. The head was more than sufficient and quite a bit of it stuck around in the lacing, which lingered on the back side of my pint glass after every sip that I took. Great orange, melon, and papaya in the nose, which were all present in the taste as well. A nice, resin mouthfeel tied all of this in together along with a hint of weed-like "skunk" and a hint of earthy hops. The alcohol and "kick" was in the back, reminiscent of of booze and bitter chocolate. This felt like a Barleywine too, in terms of the rye and strength that came out once each sip went down. Very smooth for a beer this strong and on par with its West Coast counterparts.

Yes, this was strong but that wasn't a detraction at all as I had to pace myself during my time with this. The earthiness stuck around long after the liquid went down but for a beer of this type, this was balanced well and the carbonation helped to keep it fresh and somewhat what in spite of the alcohol that made itself known before I finished this off. Nice job here by Captain Lawrence and hopheads looking for a potent brew with nice balance would be well-versed to give this beer a go. (1,696 characters)

Holy S%*t... this son of a gun is on fire - not literally, of course, because that wouldn't make sense! - but the beer that is literally in my glass at the moment almost tastes like it is on fire!

Once you swallow this bad sucker there is a lingering heat that is more than just alcohol, it's in the flavor. And like this Peruvian that Raulsky dated way back when: caliente! There is a bouquet of tropical fruits, yet the beer isn't juicy. Hell, after one more sip I may just see Rod Serling...

Get on it my children. Get on it good and hard. (545 characters)

Orange gold body with a bright white head. Left a decent amount of lacing in the glass.
Aromas of bright citrus/grapefruit and dank hops and a little alcohol
This is a palate destroyer! Coats the tongue in a straight jacket of hoppy goodness and doesn't let go!
Alcohol comes in as it warms, but still isn't as hot as you would think for 11%.
The bitterness and hop resins just last and last and last and coat your whole mouth. Don't plan on eating or drinking anything else and expect to taste it after having this beer!
Overall a very tasty beer full of hoppy resiny goodness! Give this a try. (600 characters)

Pours into a small tylip glass a hazed orange infused lighter golden with a creamy and quite sticky half finger head atop.Aromas are a little muted for a beer of this size and style, some tropical fruits and big caramel notes are noted.Tangerine and tropical fruit-like hops hit up front on the palate than some hefty caramel and boozy sweetness with a bit of burn even in the finish. This is a big brash beer with big hops and booze. (433 characters)

12 ounce bottle w/o freshness info purchased at the brewery a few days ago.

Pours hazed, dull near golden amber. Off white frothy and long lasting head. Leaves a thicker film, thick collar and more then ample high and fine sheeting and scattered lacing.

Nose is brightly of grapefruit.

On the palate its more and more grapefruit, biting lime, soaked in gin alcohol notes. Big and brash, fresh and flavorful. Hop lovers, extreme/big beer lovers rejoice. World class DIPA

Well done Captain! (492 characters)

Slightly hazed apricot and honey colored with a bright white head of rocky, bumpy froth that lingers long, and leaves broad sheets of lace up the insides of the glass as I drink. Aroma of tangerine and turbinado sugar, subtle pine and ripe fruit, notes of honey.

Rich and intense flavor of tingly hops, lots of citrus and orange rind. Boozy, some nearly cloying sweetness, ripe fruit, ABV tingles the tongue. Full mouthfeel, but a bit slick. This one is tasty, but seems a bit out of balance. (493 characters)

12oz bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a mostly clear golden amber with a decent white head on top. Not very much visible carbonation in the body. Leaves some good lacing as the head dissipates.

S: Quality aroma on this one, starts off with a big hop bang with a sweet almost maple syrup like malt backend. Hops add a nice citrus and earthy aroma.

T: Nice profile here. A good deal of bitterness but it doesn't overwhelm. Hops are a very solid blend with citrus and herbal qualities collaborating in harmony. Malts add a sweetness to the background that doesnt detract from the hop.

M: Very drinkable considering the ABV. Medium body that has a dry finish. A touch sticky from all the hop resins but not too bad.

Overall I'm really diggin this beer. Has a solid hop offering and a pleasant malt backbone. Worth trying out for any hophead. (852 characters)

Pours a hazy color, with a small amount of an orange hue. The head started white and foamy but disappeared very quickly.

The nose demonstrated the pungency of various hops, seems like the Citra always outshines the others. This one had more than your fresh young high hopped IPA.
There was the typical grapefruit citrus bouquet, but I also picked up some malt sweetness

The first sip was BIG and BOLD with a fair amount of carbonation. Very dry consistent with so many 90+ IBU beers. What I like was that there was always hops going around. Hitting all parts of my tongue displaying various attributes. The pine, the lemon, honeydew.. All coming at the same time.

The alcohol seemed to be up front, but with the aftertaste, I was left with that clean dry bitterness.

Enjoyable, hard to put an exact finger on it, different bold and good (841 characters)

This is an extremely hoppy and fruity brew; sweet, malty, and boozy. It's remarkably reminiscent of the first edition of Hi-Res.

I'm actually surprised at how good this beer is; it's right on the verge of truly excellent. However, some refinement - again, similar to how Sixpoint refined the Hi-Res formula between batches 1 and 2 - could eliminate any question of greatness here. (381 characters)
