from a bottle to a beer tulip
look; pale clear golden, lots of carbonation, 1/2" head lasts a couple of minutes, leaves a covering and moderate lacing
smell; dirt, bananas, sugar, yeast, a little hay
taste; malty, store bought donut, some nice honey and pepper notes, yeast, a little bitter, a little acrid on the finish
feel; basically smooth, medium heavy, some dryness to finish
overall; tastes more disorganized than complex, an ok belgian style single and a half

A - Light gold, banana colored and hazy with two fingers of foamy white head when poured into a snifter

S - Fruity and sweetness with some spice. Also picked up hints of wood or even sawdust (?)

T - More bitter than sweet with the bitterness really appearing on the finish. Not much spice and overall the taste was pretty muted.

M - Light body and highly carbonated, sort of like a tripel

O - This is a miss. If it's supposed to a be a tripel, it's too bitter. if it's supposed to be a spiced beer it lacks flavor. Forgettable and one to pass on.

This beer pours a bright golden straw color with a soapy one finger bright white head. There are suspended floaties that are so small they literally look like dust particles. Retention is solid and is some spotted lacing. Smell is banana, spicy hops and clove. Taste is the same with a biscuity malt backing and a peppery finish. Feel is light, crisp and refreshing. Overall a solid Belgian pale ale. Not my favorite style, but this is a great example of it.

Look- pours a golden color with a decent head. A sudsy, soapy looking lace covers 3/4 of the top and retains really well. In fact, the very last sip is just the lace.
Smell- some biscuit and cracker like aromas, fruity; pear, passion fruit and some tropical fruit. Also, there is an intermittent barnyard slightly funky aroma that comes through, which reminds me of a saison.
Taste- Fruity sweet balanced by peppery spicy. Bready malt. Light hops presence. Finish is not dry.
Feel- crispy and tight carbonation at first, then, it recedes significantly, bringing out the flavors. The body is light to medium.
I thought this was a solid, tasty and really drinkable brew.

Aroma is lots of spice and flowery herbal yeast.

Taste is very clean with a nice peppery spice note.

Very excellent beer. Just an excellent beer to sip.

Pours to hazy yellow and permanent head and good lacing. Aroma is strong bubble gum and clove and bready yeast. Flavor is a mishmash of hefeweizen, witbier, and American pale ale. Mouthfeel is rough and astringent. Meh. Never again.

12 oz bottle purchased from City Swiggers and poured into a stemmed Spiegelau Pilsner glass. Pleasant, if a bit thinner and less flavorful than I expected. Would drink again.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: The body has a deep golden color with good clarity and some visible carbonation. It is topped off with a small just off white head. This head slowly settles to a thin wispy film covering.

Smell: In the nose I get some light maltiness with mild floral and citrus hop notes.

Taste / Palate: The flavor has a good malt base with a slight clover honey like sweetness. This is balanced with floral, citrus and grassy hop bitterness. The carbonation feels well balanced to body making it very drinkable.

Reviewed from tasting notes. A spicy, malty orange nose with a little Belgian barnyard and a suspicion of smoke. Pours hazy gold with a thin white head that produces good lace. On the palate, citrus and melon, rich malts, over ripe fruit and moderate bitterness with long lingering slightly bittered malt after tastes. medium high carbonation, medium full body.

I enjoyed this chilled in a tulip at Federal Taphouse on tap.

The color is a beautiful golden with great clarity and thin white head comprised of compact beads with lac that clings in a wavy pattern. The smell has a nice amount of fruit esters of yeast with slight banana quality with gentle toasted malt aroma and subtle spice odor. The feel is spicy with medium high carbonation and low sweetness with gentle woody texture with mild alcohol as it finishes bone dry.

The taste has a mild spice flavor up front with a tropical type dried fruity flavor with a woody dry earthy and nutty malt taste with light sweetness after the swallow. This beer was one that just did not do it for me in overall enjoyment -not the belgian style I was looking for perhaps -not bad but nothing about it stands out, worth a try I guess.

The funk threw me off at first but grew on me by about hallway through the glass. Spices are quite prevalent, low alcohol is kinda nice as there is no boozey taste whatsoever. Good for what it is.

-belgian style in spiegelau ipa glass.

A: Glass consuming flour white head that quickly consumed/filled the volume of the vessel. Pale lemon brass coloring with a good clarity reveals a gentle soft rise of spacious effervesce. The head was slow to retreat, soapy and large, with generous air pockets leaving a sloppy splatter array of lacing.

S: Musky cobwebs damp basement, minimal impact.

T: Tart yeasty dry orange, pale dry grains, with musky fruit. Lightly tart grapefruit pulp, sweet floral scents, spicy citronella hints and spicy hop and alcohol warmth on the leave.

M: Crisp bite upfront, medium body, light syrupy texture feel upon relaxation with a spicy dry citrus-alcohol tint on the inner cheeks.

O: Overall dry spicy belgian pale with the warmth and alcohol contention of a tripel. good try.

Close to a 4. Everything from this brewer (widely available in NYC) is good.

L: Tons of lace grace this glass over a zesty head that returns with a swirl and a golden hazy body with lots of particulate.
S: No fault, just not ample for a 4. Classic, yeast, orchard, grass.
T: Follows the smell but more intense, with lots of apples, cloves, and pepper in the long finish.
F Medium, drying, long peppery finish - great with cheddar as a dessert.
O: Easy, available, affordable belgian style golden ale. Sessionable.

Poured from bottle into snifter

Appearance- pours a hazy gold with a short, creamy, bubbly head which recedes quickly and leaves some minor lacing.

Aroma- faint spice and citrus, bready, yeasty

Feel- medium, oily, little carbonation tingle, and finishes crisp but very smooth

Taste- taste follows the nose, to a degree- less malty, more spicy/citrusy with a hint of banana towards the end

Overall- This being my first beer in the Belgian style realm, i liked it a lot. It's not that heavy of a beer and very drinkable. That being said, it isn't too complex, which I believe makes it good for those who want to get into Belgian style ales.

Got to try on tap fresh from the brewery the other day and I thought it was very nice. The appearance was a hazy yellow with a decent head. The smell had a lot of wheat and banana to it. The taste was similar with great notes of banana, and even a little bit of spice. The feel of the beer was a little light but refreshing in the heat. Would definitely get again.

On tap at Magpie Irish Pub in Rochester, NY.

Pours an extraordinarily clear straw yellow, with a half inch head, and no lacing.

Smells like banana, clove, and Belgian yeast esters.

The taste is similar. It doesn't particularly bad, per se, but the banana and yeast flavors are just a little bit too much, and overpower any spices the beer claims to have. There's a little bit of clove, but it's just a banana story, like it was a hefeweizen, not a Belgian Pale Ale. Just falls slightly short in execution.

Light bodied, crisp, smooth mouthfeel, fairly drinkable.

A little bit of a miss here from CL.

T-Flavor was lightly sweet, pale malt, yeast and banana and clove.

O-Overall a fairly good version of a Belgium pale ale. Could drink all day along on hot day.

From a 12 oz bottle to a snifter.

Pours a pale golden color with a frothy one finger head that lasts a long time. There is good lacing on this beer when swirled. The smell is yeasts, malts and some lovely spices. Taste is much like the smell, with the flavor really leaning on the malts and yeast. The mouth feel is nice with a dry finish and medium carbonation.

All in all a decent beer, nice to find another Belgian style ale that I can go to.

I picked this up on a recent visit to Brooklyn and as yet another snowfall looms on Presidents Day, I am continuing to reduce my backlog, especially of bottles.

From the bottle: "East Coast Ales"; "Est. 2006"; "Belgian Style Ale Brewed with Spice"; "Craft brewed in New York"; "Don't let the golden color fool you; this is no simple golden ale. Brewed with an imported yeast strain & lightly hopped with US grown hops, this Belgian style ale is loaded with spicy and fruity flavors. Light in color, but big on flavor. [undersigned] Scott Varner".

My pour created a finger of dense, bone-white head with great retention. Color was an oh-so-slightly-hazy golden-yellow (SRM = 4) and it should be of no surprise to anyone that Midas, Mammon and Croesus were champing at the bit to try some. The nose had a yeasty mustiness to it that created a cheesy, slightly flowery/perfume-like scent. Mouthfeel was slightly full, thanks to a huge effervescence. The taste was slightly sweet, absolutely driven by the yeast, kind of fruity, kind of perfume-y. The bottle mentioned spice, but it was difficult to parse where the spice began and the yeast ended. Was the addition of spice a case of gilding the lily? Overall, it was a decent beer, but it was not mind blowing. The finish was semi-dry and I was again wondering whether this was a by-product of the yeast, the spice or both.

Pretty light. Straw / light amber in color but it some body (medium) to it.

Clove, banana peel, clean yeast, acetone in the background

Dry with little residual sugar, taste of Pilsener malts, noble hops

Well carbonated with small champange like bubbles, medium-light in body

The aroma and taste of this beer make this a beer a really nice sensory experience. As a pale ale the ABV is not as strong as a double or tripel style Belgian so its a bit more easygoing. That said, its so full of flavor that I tend to sip rather than guzzle this relatively light bodied brew.

12oz Bottle from Party Source Syracuse NY for $2.50 tax in

Appearance - Slightly hazy gold colour with an average size white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for around 4-5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, hops, yeast, grapefruit/lemons

Taste & Mouth - There is an above average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, grapefruit/lemons, and hops. There is also some ginger, corn, and a yeasty spiciness.

Overall - Another excellent offering from this brewer. The flavours are bright and refreshing and it has a great balance.

12oz, Bottled 8/2/13
Riedel tulip

A: Mildly hazed light golden yellow color. Thin layer if bright white. Forms a collar very early on. Some lacing bits.

S: Initially I was getting a very off putting nose. In glass, better. Typical Belgian character: the yeast, the spice blend, etc. Some grassy hops. Grainy malts.

T: Pretty typical Belgian white almost IPA type beer. Not anything to write home about. Clean. Basic. Easy drinking.

M: Medium bodied.

Captain Lawrence Brewing Company Liquid Gold (2013) - 6% ABV. Very good head foaming. Solid lacing. Highly active carbonation. Brilliant golden color paled and hazy. Citrus aromas. Lemons, oranges, and passion fruit. Crisp mouthfeel. Full citrus nose with oranges and lemons. Some wheat and barley. Good crisp mouthfeel. Not too dry, not too wet. Just right. Passion fruit, kiwi, and wheat mid-palate. Lager hops subtle but solid in the background. Creamy orange juice and grass on the back palate. A little more hops. Grains of passion and Belgian yeast. Aftertaste is clean and crisp. Lingering lemon drops and Skittles. Malt and citrus. Insanely well balanced for a Belgian fruit beer. Most of the breweries try to overdo the fruit notes making it into girly drinks or liquid candy. Headaches in a bottle if you will. But this is a more serious Saisson varietal homage. A true session farm beer. Very well done. Still a beer and highly drinkable. 3.75 out of 5. Very good.

Pours a hazy gold with a small white head. Good retention and little lacing. Fruity aroma - mango, peach, citrus, with faint floral notes. Flavor follows nose, lots of fruit up front. Not much in the way of bitterness. Finishes dry. Light to medium bodied with minimal carbonation. Overall, a decent drinkable Belgian-style pale.
