On tap at The Drafting Room on New Year's Day 2012. Served in a tulip FREE of charge!

A - Slightly hazy golden tangerine-tinged liquid with a frothy white head that retained well and decorated the tulip with plenty of thick lacing.

S - Fruity, citrusy hops paired with sweet malt. Aroma isn't quite as bold as I remember it.

T - Fresh tropical fruit akin to pineapple, mango and grapefruit takes center stage, giving the flavor of this DIPA a boldly hoppy yet sweet character. Sweet caramel and bready malt keeps the flavor balanced throughout while not compromising the bitterness. Finishes with a citrusy tang. Delicious.

M - Medium bodied with a slightly oily texture and moderate carbonation, giving the mouthfeel a hint of bristle while remaining slick on the palate. Finishes bittersweet.

D - This is definitely much better on tap, as the tropical fruit character really shines due to the freshness of the keg. Captain's Reserve is easily one of the finest East Coast DIPAs I've had.

Bottled 12/31/13. Just purchased a week ago in Connecticut. Should have known better, but we don't get Captain Lawrence brews in Mass. and I did not want to pass up the opportunity to try some.

a: Nearly clear dark gold with an inch tall white head which receded to thick surface foam and dense lacing.

s Mild citrus

t: Citrus up front with moderate hop bite over a medium sweet biscuit malt base.
High ABV is beautifully concealed. Minimal lingering bitterness.

m: Medium, very smooth, lots of carbonation tingle.

o: May not be what it was originally but this is stil a flavorful, refreshing and enjoyable IIPA.

Smell is amazing right off the bat. Very citrusy with some pretty alright dankness. It it well-balanced for an imperial which is refreshing. With the ABV being at 9% you would think it would have more of a malty characteristic to mask the alcohol, but this does not. You do get a nice lingering hop presence after each sip but its not overwhelming. A pretty excellently well-rounded beer!

Expensive bottle with no freshness date printed on.

Pours pale golden color half inch head quickly dissipates and leaves a little lacing

Smells of sweet pineapple and grapefruit

Tastes floral and citrusy with a medium amount of carbonation and bitterness with a creamy malt finish. Not a "hop bomb" as one might expect from an imperial IPA, but balanced and delicious.

Nothing too amazing about this brew. I can say that it is as smooth as a greased skillet. But by my non expert taste this falls short of other imperial ipas. I could do with more hop taste and less alcohol (you'll never hear me say that twice).

Overall for those that enjoy hop taste this isn't for you.
