I could tell as soon as I poured this one that it was going to be an immediate favorite. Very quickly fading head, yet remains effervescent looking. Very clear, very hay yellow like apple juice. Smells crazy good. Oak, white grapes and lemon faint horse blanket; I can imagine a small amount of spice coming through, coriander I believe. The flavor is more tart than sour. Lemony and grassy with some horse blanket flavor coming through, but just a little. There is a real chardonnay quality to this beer and a clear grape and sour green apple thing going on. Mouth feel is perfect for the style, a little buttery and a little prickly reminds me of a geuze. It is so sad that this beer is so limited because I could drink tones of it.

Got to love a small, young and local (at least to me) brewery that puts out a stream of small (bottled) batches of eclectic and high quality ales, in addition to the four regular high quality craft brews it brews all year round on tap. "Cuvee" is a Belgain golden, fermented with muscat grapes, then refermented with "Bret" yeast, then aged in wine barels. Yeeha...love the style and love the fact that brewer Scott V has the stones to brew up a quite sour brew and then pitch it and explain it to his loyal following....anyway, this one pours cloudy, lemony, yellowy amber with a quickly departing white head and leaving just a trace of fine lacing. The nose is where the excitement begins, lots of fruit, lemony freshness and a funky, musty foretelling of the sour Bret blast to come. Moderate to quite sour on my scale. Lots of puckering lemon/lime, I also pick up tart berry notes, quinine, ginger, spicy honey, woody, herbal, Bret FUNKYNESS....WOW...wild ale, lambic, Belgian fans rejoice...refreshing, complex, and thoroughly enjoyable...yet another home run for the good Captain...go get some, add a hunk of smelly cheese, some crusty bread, olives, wild lettuce salad, sit back and revel in what a lucky human being you are! Label notes also mention that this one is expected to age well, will the blessings never cease?

Looks like I will be the first person to review batch 4.

A: It pours a slightly cloudy but very vibrant golden hue with a nice level of white carbonation that quickly fades. Some rising carbonation no lacing.

S: Nice oak presence that also provides a little a solid earthy funkiness and. There is also a very prevalent fruit note, grape, that gives this a very wine like aroma. Some lemon notes and a bit of mustiness.

T: Very fruity with a citrus lemon and green apple notes upfront followed by sour grape notes. Very nice tartness that makes me pucker a little bit. Some hints of vanilla and some earthy wood notes.

M: There is a fair amount of acidity, but this one isnt had to sip at all. Its a bit like drinking lemonade. There is a slight bit of heat

D: Way to easy to drink and quite refreshing because of all the fruitiness. I really look forward to trying this one down the road to see how it ages

A massive thanks to Dan (Dslim71) for hooking me up with a couple of these beers and allowing me to tick a longtime want. Cheers and Merry Christmas! (also thanks to Cuzco!) Batch 5, 375ml bottle, split with my brother-in-law.

Appearance – Pours a lovely hazy golden color into my trusty generic tulip. About a half finger of slight off white head is achieved with a moderate pour, which dissipates quickly leaving zero lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell – Just a plethora of barnyard funk and other tart aromas emerge from the glass as I swirl the beer around. Heavy must, wet hay, slight leather, tart citrus (i.e. lemon zest), and earthy qualities.

Taste – An immediate mouth puckering from the lemon zest which fades into fantastic barnyard funk qualities. To be honest, my brother-in-law and I both stated it has a slight gueuze like feature. The acidity from the lemon (and also green apple) is pleasant and I personally hope this gets a bit more tart with some age. When you take a sip the back sides of your jaw tense up from the tartness which I personally loved, haha. The mix of the tart citrus and funk is utterly delicious. I am savoring this beer as much as I can.

Mouthfeel – Medium bodied, appropriate carbonation, finishes a hint dry.

Overall – A wonderful experience from a beer. A perfect time to open it up on Christmas. I am thoroughly enjoying this drink and am sad to see my half disappearing faster than I was hoping. Very happy I have a couple more to cellar to see how this beer ages.

Sampled thanks to some generosity at Capone's (not sure who poured this but thanks!).

Appearance: Hazy golden with no head.

Smell: Nice sour funky aroma. Very tart lemony and earthy nose.

Taste: Very acidic and sour. Nice flavors of grape, funky Brett and even some oak.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied and dry.

Drinkability: I was very lucky to get to try this one here. I was impressed with the overall sourness and it really was a great beer. I would definitely seek this one out again.

consumed on 7/6, while I was "on Hiatus." picked up at the brewery a while back. enjoyed from my captain lawrence tulip.
Batch 5

a - brew poured a mostly opaque orange with lively carbonation. at first there was a big fizzy head, but it fizzled away in moments, yet i could still see a geyser of champagne like bubbling at the center of the surface of the beer.

s - smell is dynamite. sour tarts, white wine, green grapes. some brett sweetness.

t - taste is spot on. super sour green grapes. lemons and fruit drenched in white wine. good sourness without being off putting. the oak is a bit present in the finish. the brett shows in some sweetness, the funk can be found as the sourness rolls off your tongue.

m - tart, prickly carbonation. some spiciness in the finish.

o - overall, super refreshing. really well made sour. captain lawrence is no joke when it comes to sour beers and castleton is a fine example.

Batch 4

A. Pours a very clear yellow-orange. Just a few shades darker than many white wines. A fizzy head on a hard pour quickly dissipates, but plenty of carbonation remains present.

S. This is off the charts - oak, balanced funk, plenty of sweet white wine-like grape character. Very bright. Very balanced.

T&M. The first sip is surprisingly tart. The brett has dried out this beer quite a lot. As I adjust to the sourness, I can slowly start to pick out more flavors - oak first, then the sweet grapes from the nose. Plenty of alcohol burn on the finish (I expect this will mellow with age). Just a bit of lingering funk. The body is really nice here - approaching a dry champagne spritziness.

D. This is a sipper, but the more I sip, the more it opens up. I'm really liking this, but I think I'll like it even more with age. I'll be seeking these out, and then trying to forget about them.

Pours a bright straw yellow almost perfectly clear but for the strong bubbles trying to get to the top. Smell of strong horseblanket brett with some battery acidic smells, belgian malt and some spicey belgian golden ale aromas.

Taste of delicious golden ale spiked with a brett tonic of strong horseblanket twang and acid. All delicious to me , probably not to anybody who does not like wild ales. Tastes so refreshing out of the bottle at cold temperatures that it is tempting to just drink it all at once at whatever temperature it happened to be when you opened it. Fortunately, I was patient as this only comes around once a year and is hard to acquire at that. As it warms up, the grapes really become more prevalent, mixing with oak, and lightly caramelized sugars. The finish is dry and not unlike one that you would get from a good bottle of champagne, finishing with a nice little bitter twang on the end of your tongue.
If only this were released more often... Highly Recommended

Batch 4.

A-Pours a clear yellow gold with a little bit of fizzy white head that does not last.

S-Strong aromas of white chardonnay grapes, stone fruit and some funk.

T-Delicious. Lots of good chardonnay notes in the front, with a very strong underlying dose of oak. Some bitterness in the finish and some very mild sourness.

M-Light to medium bodied, very dry.

D-Very approachable, great fruit and moderate sourness make this a sessionable sort of beer...if I only had more than one to drink.

Batch 2, 750ml bottle at 50 degrees.

Pours pale gold with a light fog and a quickly fizzling white head. Zero lacework and a placid surface within seconds of pouring.

Aromatics lead off with a hint of Brett from arms length immediately as the glass is poured. Closer examination reveals lemon-spritzed wet hay, dried pinapples, grapefruit pulp, and white grapeskins. Soured apples, sherry-soaked apricots, and wet cat follow through with a hint of cheese rind.

Light bodied with a razor-sharp crispness and a drying, tart mouthfeel.

Lemon pith, grape must, acid-spiked grapefruit, and oaky tannins start the palate. Grassy and catty sour notes quickly step forward along with hints of juniper, Sherry vinegar, and sharp minerals.

Finishes with a peppery warmth, lingering lemon-infused acid, and tart funk.

Very tasty. Plenty sour with a boatload of Brett. Bone-dry with plenty of lively carbonation and a sharp as nails tartness.

Revisit 12/4/10

375ml bottle, batch 4, vintage 2010.

This bottle had a pellicle that formed in the neck which made me quite curious. Opening the bottle there was barely a whisp of carbonation and the brew poured completely flat with the white flakes of pellicle floating in suspension. Clear light gold otherwise.

Aromatics are very wine-like and funky. Crisp Chardonnay character with sour apples, pineapples, wet goat, and lemon pith.

Light bodied with a flat but crisp mouthfeel. Fairly sharp but I'm missing the lively carbonation of previous vintages.

Grapeskins, acid-spiked pineapple, vineous tannins, and tart apples lead off the palate. Oaky undertones and sour fruit pith follow through along with hints of cider vinegar and lemon seeds.

Finishes with a lingering, drying, crisp tartness, soured citrus, apples, and tannic grape.

Still a great beer, albeit flat.

Beer pours a clear light yellow without much head - it's really not much to look at. The smell here is excellent - white wine, oak and lactic sourness really come together nicely to make a mouthwatering aroma. The flavor too is fantastic, it's incredibly vinous and pretty sour with a nice grape aspect to it to go along with a little bit of oak. You can definitely see how the white wine factored in here, as it's one of the more wine-forward beers I've had. Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied but coats the mouth very nicely. Overall, this is a great beer and a must try for wine lovers who also happen to enjoy sour beers. It's what I hoped Russian River Temptation would be.

Batch 4

A: The beer is a golden hue, which comes as no surprise as this is labeled as a golden ale. There is a white, bubbly head that fizzes away almost immediately after pouring. The beer is mostly clear, with only a slight haze.

S: Apples, grapes, funk, wild yeast, oak,wine, tart fruits.

T: A really delicious sour ale. Apples, grapes and pears balance well with notes of oak and a prominent wild yeast component. There is a tannic presence as well, reminiscent of a fine French sauvignon blanc. Well done.

M: Very tart. Nice feel with a fairly low carbonation level. Alcohol hidden pretty well.

D: A delectable treat. I hope I have the pleasure of indulging in this fine beverage again in the near future. It would be worth driving to the release and waiting in line to obtain this.

appearance: served in a de koninck chalice, pale straw golden body with very little head...glowing yellow tone

smell: tart lemon, white grape, heavy whiffs of oak, cider vinegar, light grain, brett yeast

taste: "that's wild alright" - funky barnyard brett, earthy, sparkling white grape juice, dry tart lemon, nicely spiced, nice sour

mouthfeel: tart and light

drinkability: good

The Captain Lawrence booth at the EBF was empty for a while so it was like I was drinking my own bottle.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy orangish golden color with a layer of white head that leaves a ring around the edge of the cup.

Smell: Vinegar and some lemon tartness along with an herbal note. Smells quite crisp.

Taste: Quite sour, vinegary and a citrus tartness. Mildly sweet with a funkiness that accompanies the sour citrus taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with smooth yet aggressive carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This is a really dry and refreshing sour. I would love to have my own bottle some day.

App- Glowing golden yellow with zero head or cling. A few bubbles around the edges.

Smell- A great wild ale. The booze levels are incredibly hidden with a lot of sour on the nose with some oaky lemon fruits. The tart level really balanced the lactic out. Smooth and tasty with a small white wine tannin note.

Mouth- A bit of a light medium with a fairly medium carbonation level. A bit of grape and lemon residual flavors.

Drink- A damn fine wild ale. Great layers and very smooth. Thank you Steve for sharing.

750 ml bottle, batch 2 courtesy of Dyan.

Pours a cloudy yellow, light amber, pretty unique colour for a beer, thin fizzy white head forms, quickly settles down to a thin ring around the glass, no lacing. Smell is crazy acidic, lemons, oak, grapes, vinegar, vanilla, very funky, lots of straw and barnyard with the acidity, very complex. Taste is similar, sweet/sour beginning, toast, oak, lemon juice, quite acidic, vanilla, white grape juice, nice sweet sugary middle really balances out the sourness, nice dried fruit flavour, finish is charred wood and lemon juice, but nicely balanced and a dry floral end. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with low to medium carbonation, very smooth and perfectly balanced, no rough edges, perfect amount of sour and perfect amount of sweet. Very nice sour, thanks a ton Dyan!

Nice straw color with a quick to disappear white head.

The aroma was of granny smith apples and hay.

The taste first jumped out as tart apples and peaches and mellowed down to ripe pears and green grapes.The slightly sour flavor made this a perfect beer for a hot summer afternoon.

This beer was almost too drinkable, I overheard other who don't normally drink sours loving this one.

A- Body is a uniform, translucent really foggy blond hue. Pours with a 1 finger foamy white head that has decent retention. Leaves traces of lacing down the glass.

S-Amazing! Tart white grape, apple, and pear-very fruity. There is also a hint of vinegar and acidic tartness detectable in the nose.

T- Upfront is lots of apple and pear with a very light acidic sourness/twang to it. Background is a slight yeasty funk and some floral hop overtones. Finish is consistent with the initial flavor but is slightly dry. Very well done and balanced.

M- Medium tingly carbonation with a light drinkable body.

D- This brew is great! It offers a great balance of fruit, sourness, and funk while still being somewhat dry. This sour is on the mild side but very well put together and another fine brew by CL!

Got a couple of these bottles in a trade.

A - pours a bright pale yellow. Very nice head white and sticky. The beer looks inviting.

S - oh man, funk. Smells like rotted lemons, but in a good way. Lemony too.

T - funky. Brett comes through, tastes like lemon peel inside of a locker room. It's very tart from the middle of the taste. Dryness is at the end with more lemon peel.

M - it's perfectly carbonated. It's creamy and dry at the same time. Love it.

D - for a sour, it's not over powering or offputting. The abv is well hidden and the tanginess keeps you at bay with more desire.

O - I like this sour. Glad I have another bottle.

Batch 4

Poured into a Rock Art tulip glass. A big, fizzy, head forms at first, but rapidly fades away without a trace. The body is a pale, golden-yellow. Looks nice, but I'd like to see a little bit of head or lacing.

Musty oak barrels with a bit of barnyard funk rise up from the glass. Somewhat yeasty in aroma with bready malts and lemon citrus. Juicy golden apples. Very nice.

Tart apples mix with a bit of yeast funk in the flavor. Zinfandel wine characteristics from the muscat grapes. Light oak presence and slightly acidic. Lots of tartness and very light alcohol.

Mouthfeel is smooth with crisp tartness. Light, spritzy carbonation, some acidity and faint warming alcohol. Almost slightly creamy at times, like blue cheese consistency.

This is a very drinkable wild ale. The bottle disappeared much too quickly and the ABV is essentially unnoticeable. The flavor is quite juicy, tart and well balanced. Probably the best golden American wild I have had alongside Temptation. This beer is really just a treat to drink. I highly recommend seeking out a bottle if you can. Great balance, flavor and tartness. Nice work Captain Lawrence.

Beautiful big fizzy head. Amazing color and aroma. Lip puckeringly sour, maybe a bit too much so for my tastes. Excellent for the style though.

Batch 4, so I've been storing this one for a couple of years.

A: Brilliant golden color, with a small white head the dissolves into a ring. Wish there was a little retention. Effervescent. A little haze from the yeast.

S: Sweet and tart fruity smell, and with a strong brett kick. It's almost like a white wine mixed with brett, which now that I think about it is the point, I suppose.

T/M: Tart and funky. Lactic. Funky. Woody. Distinct grape flavor -- even more like white wine than I remember it being a couple of years ago. A little grainy on the finish, with a mild earthy bitterness. Mouthfeel is light and dry with low-ish carbonation.

O: Sad to finish off my last CdC, but beer is made for drinking, no? Excellent.

Batch #2 bottle received from Dyan, thanks for the chance to try this rarity.

Appearance: Pale amber with a slight haze to it. Plenty of carbonation, but very little head.

Smell: Pure unbridled funk is most immediate, but beneath that there's a strong undercurrent of tart grapes, almost white wine-like, and a hint of spice.

Taste & mouthfeel: Tart and dry with some oaky tannins. The inclusion of grapes gives this beer a definite wine-like quality, bringing to mind a funked up dry white at times, as odd as that sounds. There's an underlying spiciness, but it's subtle enough that I can't tell which spices were used. While this is definitely on the dry side, there's a hint of honey-like sweetness present that does a lot to balance the tannic finish.

Big thanks to corby112 for this bottle, poured into my white birch glass. Celebrating the end of another term with this beer, cheers. The beer pours a hazy straw color with an effervescent glow around the edges. There is a thin cap of white foam that leaves no lacing.

The smell is tart apples, sour grapes, oaky wood notes and lemon zest. There is also a musty sourness that rears it's head throughout the scent.

The flavors match the smell well, tart apples, sour grapes and a healthy dose of citrus sour funk. There is a slight oak flavor that complements all the sour and crisp citrus notes.

The beer is light bodied and only slightly carbonated, but the crisp and sharp flavors and dry finish make this beer insanely drinkable. The sour grape flavor is intense at first, but it is so well balanced it makes this beer incredibly drinkable. I wish I had another.

Poured into my Hill Farmstead tasting glass, revealing a slight champagne fizz over light golden, minimally hazy body. Smells like a meaty white wine with slight apricot and vanilla sweet notes, citrus and a little funk. Very nice smells, all together.

Tastes quite sour at first, but very clean and sweet in the finish. A little oak comes through the light malt and fruity grape flavor. Despite its delicacy, there is a distinct meatiness to the strength of the compilation that makes me want to pair it with something hearty like lamb satay. The spices add a nice bite to the sour kick. Carbonation is thorough and tingly, but not spritzy. Served just slightly chilled, it's very drinkable but something to sip and savor for all its complexity.

Very glad I have more of these!
