On cask at Birreria Paradiso in D.C.

A: Chestnut brown hue with a nice head and plenty of lace.

S: Jam, chestnuts, honey, Belgian yeast, raisins, plums, prunes, figs.

T: I have never tried this beer on a regular draft or from a bottle. I wonder how much the cask and warmer serving temperature had to do with the huge aromas and deep complexities I received from this beer. Everything listed in the aroma is very present in the taste. There's a lot going on here. This is one of the most interesting beers I have had in a while.

M: As with many cask ales, this was incredibly smooth with very little carbonation.

D: Sweet and delicious. One glass was just right.

We rip a 750 mL, pouring into our CB’s Signature Series chalices. The coloring glows a deep ruby amber, putting up a pith of a tan creamy head, and showing surprisingly high carbonation for its age. The aroma is musky as hell, with massively cloying honey, formaldehyde, clove and chemical phenols, rose stem, bready and sweetly dark Belgian amber and caramel malts, brown sugar syrups, and molasses. Holy crap, this is unexpectedly sour!! The age must have done something to it, because this is as sour as your typical wild, Flanders red, or Oud Bruin, with big inclusions of honey, tart raspberry and apple fruitiness, white grape skins, basement musk, hollow booze, cheddar cheese, gravel, champagne yeastiness, chestnut and cashew oily chewiness, autumn leaves, and copper. The feel is wet and a touch slimy, but works a tannic, puckered astringency deep into the mouth’s mucosa. Drinkability is as a slow sipper, if for nothing more than to try and figure out what you’re dealing with here.

Overall, this bottle is at least two years old, if not more, and we’re not sure if it was the age, or something intrinsic to the brewing and bottling process, but this beer has become a whole new kind of beast. It does not seem like a dubbel, but more of a Belgian-based wild. At this point, the malts take a back seat to the sourness, but it works wonderfully. The smell seems more to be like what is advertised, and what was likely intended, but the taste was downright shocking, in the best way possible. One curious thing was the feel, which seemed scarily slimy at first sip, but this faded after the first few minutes. Just to underline how sour this has actually become, we just had Almanac’s Dogpatch Strawberry, and this is AS sour as that guy, just for a frame of reference. The warmth cuts this, allowing for more of the nuttiness to shine, but man, was this one the surprise of the year.

I forgot about this one in my cellar; always interesting to see how a Captain Lawrence brew has developed.

A: Clear chestnut body (naturally), with a finger of fine beige head that settles into a persistent ring and leaves delicate lace. Quite attractive.

S: Smells unlike any Dubbel I've had, with an interesting mixture of sour fruit and nutty malt. The sourness is both lactic and acetic, with grape and cherry standing out. Lemon as well. More like an Oud Bruin than a Dubbel, but I'm not complaining - it's quite enticing.

T: Follows the nose, with delightful vinous sourness dominating and just enough nutty sweetness midway through to add balance. The finish is puckeringly acidic and delectably dry. It's like someone blended a red wine with a Dubbel and then randalled it through warheads. I'm a fan.

M: Well-carbonated medium body. Lively but not too prickly. Pretty good.

O: Crazy. I wasn't expecting much from a several-year-old 6% Dubbel, but whatever happened to this beer turned it into a delightful sour. If you told me it was Rosso e Marrone, I wouldn't doubt it. Really sour, really good. I just wish I'd opened it at a tasting instead of by myself.

Cheers!

750ml bottle: This one pours a ruby tinged darker amber color. There was a small light tan head that didn’t linger long. The nose is very nose. Spicy, yeasty, some malts, honey, dark fruits. The taste is very good. Some tart cherry, spices, malts, honey, other berries. There is a lot going on here for a 6% beer. Very nice!

Bottle pour at mrbubbler's tasting.

Pours a clear copper with a foamy bone head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, honey, fruit, and earth aromas. Taste is much the same with slightly sour fruit and honey flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of earthy bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with interesting chestnut aromas and flavors.

Another treat in a trade from zipper8650

Poured from bottle into Duvel Tulip

A: Pours dark reddish brown with a 2 finger fizzy head that settles quickly into a light bubbly ring around the top of the brew. Little-to-no lacing on the glass.

S: There is some definite funk and yeast smells. Sweet malty hints and definitely lots of honey. With a giant whiff I definitely get a bit of jam as well.

T: Very tart taste, as expected from the funkiness in the nose - maybe not to this degree. The finish is dominated with honey, which is unique for the flanders/sourish style. As it warms with every sip I get more and more of the jam. Some smokey malt flavors hide in the taste as well.

M: High carbonation. Moderate body. Dry. Good balance to the unique tastes for the style.

O: This one is balanced extremely well. I had such little expectations, due to the lower overall rating. As it warmed the flavors seemed to jump out of the glass and get even more prominent. I love how they went "off the beaten path" and completely out of the norm for the style with the flavors for this one. Bonus points in my book for that.

A - Pours a slightly hazy ruby-orange with a finger of frothy white head. The head fades at a normal pace leaving behind some light lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of sweet caramel malts, dark fruits, Belgian yeast, berries, jam, honey, and a touch of spices.

T - Starts off with a mix of sweet caramel malts with dark fruits, berries, and some light spices. Through the middle, some honey comes through with some more fruity jam, some Belgian yeast, and some more berry fruits. The finish is a mix of berries, caramel malts, Belgian yeast, honey, jam, and some spices.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a sweet and fruity finish.

D - Very drinkable. Lots of fruity flavors and honey, but the balance and complexity is spot on.
