This is a new beer that was produced after waiting for some of our sour brown ale barrels to "ripen" and take of the flavors of the wild yeast and the oak barrels until we thought they were ready to be blended and bottled. This batch is a blend of 6 barrels, 4 of one batch and 2 of another, the mix of which has created a totally new beer. Intensely sour with hints of oak and funk. ABV 7.5-8.0%. The first batch's code FO/BB means French Oak Bret Brown.

This is a different beer than Barrel Select #1 which was a single barrel served at EBF 2009.

A slight haze to a slightly darker then ruby beer. Inch high light tan head faded over two minutes to a slick on top. Tiny carbonation bubbles.

Scents of raspberries with a very tart funk. There is a very faint malt backing to the aroma, but the overall sour presence is too overpowering to be a good balance.

Same raspberry from the nose is forward on the tongue. A bit of a gritty nature to the malt and a faint hops note on the back of the tongue. A bit more balanced then the scent.

Average thickness on the tongue, but a clingy sour on all surfaces. Carbonation is average.

A good brew. This would be great for a salad with raspberries and lemon dressing. Yet another solid brew from a solid brewer. Worth hunting down for any fan of wild ales.

First release of bottles, enjoyed at the Birdsall House in Peekskill,NY as part of their opening weekend celebration. Bomber that was bottled 2/10, pours cloudy/murky medium brown, under a dark tan head, showing excellent retentive power, with cling, sheet and more then ample scattered lace. Woody, musty, sour nose with a jolt of vinagar. Solidly sour, with out being biting or off putting, dark malts still present. Earthy, funky, barnyard oozing, oaky and highly complex. Easy flowing over the tongue. Wild ale/sour beer lover track this one down and enjoy. Simply delicious new one from the good captain.

Big thanks to Exiled for sharing this bottle, which was drank alongside Cuvee de Castleton, Rosso e Marrone and Flaming Fury. I thought this was the best beer of the four.

The beer pours a reddish-amber color with a white head. The aroma is brown sugar, tart cherries and some brett notes. The flavor is tart cherries, some funk, some brett notes, oak and vanilla. The beer is very dry. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. An outstanding beer.

Pours a nice dark brown with a small brown head. Nose is sour and funky. Really nice.

Taste is really sharp and funky. Very smooth and drinkable for a funky sour. I really love this. Mothfeel is sharp and full, good carbonation.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a Duchess wine glass. Shared by schen9303.

A: Moderate pour (after half of it exploded into the sink) yields a 1 finger, fluffy off-white head with decent retention. Beer is a cloudy brown-clay. Lacing is abundant, surrounding the glass in a near permanent design.

S: Woody, funk, soil, plums, cherries, and rasberry... all engulfed in a vinegary booziness. Very appropriate and gives a great preview of what's gonna be on the palate.

T: Acetic acid and vinegar and intensely sour throughout. Sour plums and cherries are present along with soil and dirt in the background. Yeasty bitterness is present towards the middle and end, no doubt a result of the intense carbonation. Finish is dry but messy. Yeast leaves its mark, adding more and more bitterness to the end and with each sip thereafter.

M: Here's where this beer falters. Light to medium bodied that just keeps getting fuller and fuller as it warms. Carbonation is there but evaporates quickly, leaving a heavy beer that drains the palate. Appropriately dry though and it seems to suck all the moisture out of my mouth. Finish is a bit messy due to the lingering yeastiness.

D: Very intrigued to try this a year from now, the sourness here is a bit too intense for me when coupled with the inappropriately heavy body. This beer just isn't lively enough for its style and I'd like to see how time will change it. Can't wait to come back to it in a year or two.

Drank alot of this yesterday and then more of it today

A: Murky brown with a brown colored head that was fairly thick when it was poured. Some clarity, but not much and very little lacing

S: Nice sour fruit notes, some cherries and even a bit of figs. Also very nice dryness. Some good wood notes too as well a a touch of sweetness.

T: Much like it smells with some sour fruit, and very winelike with a load of tannins. I really enjoyed the oaky woodnotes that were present.

M: The dryness was my favorite part of this beer. It was slightly puckering in terms of sourness and really i cant find many flaws heere.

D: Very easy to drink for a sour. One in which i can enjoy probably a whole bottle myself.

Pours murky reddish with a nice lasting off-white head and good lacing.

Aroma is great and fruity with sour raspberries and cherries and some funk.

Flavor is good and funky. Not as great a fruit flavor as the aroma suggests, but it's still solid. Cherries, raspberries, and green apples. Slightly vinous.

Decent palate - medium body and acidity.

Very nice beer overall. Drinkable, and pretty good overall for an American Wild Ale.

Wasn't on their official bottle list, but when I asked the guys at Birdsall House if they had any sours on hand, they delved into the far reaches of the fridge and pulled out this friggin' beauty. Whoa baby; this sour is SOUR. I shared some with the guy next to me at the bar and he just nodded his head and said "sour". Didn't ask for seconds...
A gorgeous beer. Brown like fresh apple cider from the farm stand. A whole bunch of nose, but vinegar is obviously the most prominent. I was eating a Reuben sandwich with very salty fries and some house made pickles. Well, this beer stood up to all of them and continued to shine. Cleared my palate after each and every sip. Only slight drawback was that it does leave a pretty good burn in your stomach due to all the acid; have your zantac ready and waiting....and then just keep drinking!

A cloudy garnet brown with a tight creamy head and a decent amount of lace. Smell is just lovely. Cherries and oak, light funk with a red wine like grape note. Sourness is plentiful. An underlying malt facet. Taste is so good I wish I bought six bottles instead of four. Tart and sour cherries and grapes. Lovely malt core with a Belgian flair. Leather and lots of oak and a bit of vanilla in the finish. The finish is dry and long with juiciness dripping from your mouth as you relish the malt and wood tones fading on your palate. Feel is superbly soft with a velvety creaminess as it wraps around the tongue. Still enough carbonation to keep it light. Very easy to drink this one and but you want to savor every drop.

Barrel Select Series; Barrel No. FOBB/Bottled 2/10. American sour ale.

This is a wonderful drink all around. Amber with white head.

Nose of light sweet funk and light sweet sour.

Well balanced sour that's a big mouthful - rich, full, bold and sour, but with a sweet/malt/cooked orange flavor profile. There is a malty character and actually a carmel and coffee flavor profile that is unexpected in a sour. Yet, it works and is delicious. A vanilla oaky nose and flavor developes as undertones as it warms in the glass.

All around a nice drink.

Poured into a standard tulip. Bottle was fresh from the recent release.

Minimal head and virtually no head retention. There were some brown yeasty flakes floating on top of the head when I did my second pour. yum!

Light brown in color.

Great smells coming from this one. Fruity at first but the typical barnyard and sour smells come to the forefront after a bit.

Quite tart and sour up front but a very smooth finish. Very lactic with a bit of a vingary burn in the back of my throat especially as the beer warmed in my glass.

Great american Oude Bruin (though not quite as sweet as some classic Belgian examples). I have a feeling this one will continue to develop nicely in the bottle. I am glad I have a few bottles for the cellar.

Another great one from the Captain.

thrilled to be able to have this one, poured into a snifter at room temp.

dark brown with some light reddish touches around the sides and the bottom of the glass. A nice and foamy brown head rose up to a height of around two inches before dropping down to about half and then hanging around the rest of the session with deep and thoroughly coating side glass lace, this one was perfect.

The aroma was wonderful, previously poster arrived atthe word fuck to describe and I would have to agree here. Rich sour notes, sweet and tart cherries dropped in with light oak notes as it warmed, but dominted by the deep sour and cherry notes. Such a wonderful balance here between the sour notes and the rich underlying fruit flavor. Some nice dark malts as it starts to warm, but the long drawn out sour flavor comes back and dries out the palat

The beer is a murky, turbid reddish-brown color. It's well carbonated and has a large and solid off-white cap.

Strong acetic acid in the aroma. Strawberries, raspberries, balsamic vinegar, brown sugar - quite pungent and complex, the bacteria gave this a fruitiness so intense you'd swear they brewed this with berries of some kind.

Balsamic vinegar-like acetic acid is heavy on the palate. Strawberry and cherry fruitiness is matched by somewhat heavy tannins. Medium-light in body with a tannic and acetic finish. This is good, though it's a beer you have to be in the mood for. The first time I tried this I found it overly acetic, the second time I enjoyed it much more. I'm not often crazy about sour beers with a dominant acetic acid character these days, but this one pulls it off.

750 mL bottle courtesy of cmurren25 in a recent BIF, thanks a ton Chad! Pours a dark copper color with a little bit of tan foam. Fades pretty quick to a nice sheen and collar.

Nose is sweet-ish with plenty of fruity tartness. Oh, and did I mention puckeringly sour? Yea, strawberries and cherries.

Whoa, this bitch is sour, but oh-so delicious. Slight oak and vanilla are really the only other things I can discern besides the powerful fruity sour/funk. Carbonation might be a bit high, but there is really not a whole lot to complain about here for lovers of sour beers. It is really good, but had this next to Red Poppy from LA and lacks the complexity and finesse that Red Poppy shows. Still though, if you can get your paws on one of these, do it!

French oak, brett brown bottled in 2/10. This one gushed a decent amount upon opening, but I was prepared for it as the last time I saw a bottle of this opened it did a number on the walls and furniture.

3.5 A: The color on this is a bit disgusting. It's a opaque brown in the shade of half parts mud and half parts shit. Initially three plus fingers of creamy beige/light brown head with average retention and some nonuniform lacing.

4.0 S: Good amount of brett funk in here. Musty basement with a musky earthiness. Fruity lactic acid with apple and cherry notes. Some sour acetic acid as well. Good amount of oak and a light tannic astringency.

4.0 T: The taste is a much more intense version of the nose and not for the faint of mouth. There's a mouth puckering sourness to this with moderate amounts of acetic acid and more than moderate amounts of lactic. The sourness comes with some fruity notes. Sour dark cherry, not quite ripened sour plums, and green apple. Oak comes through a bit stronger in the taste, but isn't a dominant flavor. A light vanilla and a moderate tannic astringency.

4.0 M: Medium body. Carbonation is a bit higher than I'd like, but that was dealt with by twirling. Quite creamy, which is wonderful, but the mouth puckering is a bit higher than I'd prefer.

4.0 D: Pretty good beer. A few of these categories were borderline next highest score. This is fairly complex, but the intense sourness gives an illusion of being one dimensional.

A: Pours a hazy, muddled, dark caramel brown color. Sitting on top for the duration is a thin and creamy, khaki colored head that leaves quite a bit of lace on the glass. Open by the sink, it's a slooow gusher. Loads of sediment suspended in the skim and ring.

S: Aromas of tart peaches, sour cherries, vinegar, and funk. Strangely enough, from time to time I was able to pick up on an ever so slight cocoa/chocolate smell.

T: Fantastic mix of flavors. This starts off with a blast of sour and acidic cherry and really tart green apple. Right after that I got some sodden buttery oak and right behind that is that hint of cocoa. Finishes with a mild vinegar flavor and slightly sweet orchard fruit as well as a little bit of funk.

M: Almost perfect balance between acidity, sour, funk, astringency, and creaminess. Don't ask me how, but this feels full and creamy at times.

D: I can't believe how smooth and full this beer presented itself for a sour AWA. Those guys at the Captain are really firing on all cylinders, especially with their sours.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip. The beer pours a murky hazy dark ruddy copper with a thin white head. As the head fades to a tight cap it leaves behind a surprising amount of foamy lacing.

The smell is tart lemon, vinegar, hay and musty oak. There are hints of peaches, pears, green apples and apricots under all the sour, but they are definitely in the background.

The taste is similar to the smell; tart vinegar, hay, oak and lemon zest. The green apples that were so faint in the smell really come out in the flavor, especially as the beer warms. It's a very nice addition. The mid-palate on this one is strangely sweet, before the lemon zest and barrel flavors are re-introduced to dry out the finish.

The beer is well carbonated, light bodied and well balanced. The beer is tart and funky, without going overboard at any point. The alcohol is well hidden by the tart flavors, and the crisp dry finish invites me to drink the entire bottle. This is one I am happy to have multiples of, I can't wait to see what more time in the bottle does here.

Pours a golden amber with a nice off white head and a decent amount of lacing. Smells nice and musty with quite a bit of sourness. Stone fruits come through, but mostly straight sourness. Some acetic character. Taste of red grapes, currants, and some sour peaches. Medium body with good carbonation. Good drinkability overall; really looking forward to seeing how this one develops.

A - Darkly red color with a white head that popped up about one finger and dissipated to a ring on the edges, slight lacing on the sides, but nothing overly extravagent. Very rich, and nice looking beer.

S - It smells tart like a wild should, but it has a great sweetness to it that mutes the tartness and blends quite nicely. There is a very very small woody smell to it that is apparently the result of the barrel aging.

T - This is fairly sour but has a nice sweetness that keeps it from becoming overpowering. Tiny bit of phenol burn in the taste. It's simple, with nothing real big hanging out, but I think it works for this.

M - Very carbonated, you can feel it on the tongue, almost to the heavier end of medium bodied. Dry finish.

D - This gets harder to drink as you go. It's quite full bodied and and the sourness kind of grows and starts to feed back on you.

Had this at Dvelcich's tasting on 07.31.10 - reviewed from notes. Glad I could share this beer with everyone.

This pours a murky brownish/amber color. Kind of a creamy off-white tannish head that maintains a frothy cap over the beer and leaves behind some nice chunky lacing. The look and the smell remind me a bit of Consecration.

Smells got a dry earthy sweetness if that makes any sense. Some sort of dark fruit, like currants or figs.
At this point I accidentally snorted a little-- this beer is SOUR when snorted! I literally had tears in my eyes. It felt like my sinuses were bleeding. It burns like eating red berries.

Anyway... The taste is biiiig on some nondescript dark fruit-- maybe some currants and red grapes. A nice oaky presence. A very drinkable and enjoyable sour brew. The body has plenty of carbonation. Really nice and drinkable.

Just outstanding.

750mL bottle poured into a tulip. Bottled 02/2010.

(A)- Pours a deep burnt sienna color. Plenty of tan froth and lots of lacing.

(S)- A nice dry oaky bite up front. Lots of tartness detected in this. Some good leathery funk to it. Some bits of vinous vinegar and raisin.

(T)- Very similar to the smell. A big oaky sour bite that flows into some rich acidic raisin, vinegar, prune, and almost a cinnamon spice to it. Not as funky as the smell was, but it is subtle. Maybe even bits of subtle cocoa.

(M)- A nice carbonation level and balance. I like the sour bite this has on the finish. Good oak profile and acidity.

(D)- This is a winner from CL! Not crazy sour, but it is hefty. Superb oak nuances and just a great overall feel. A bit cleaner feel; less funk, but still tastes just great. Very enjoyable.

Thank you to both Matt and Jason for sharing this one yestarday.

A: The pour is a cloudy amberish color with very minimal off-white head.

S: A nice acidity up front along with good fruit aromas in the form of raspberries, cherries, and maybe some green apple. Quite a bit of oak and a mild mustiness as well.

T: Tart, but not overly sour. The acidity is mostly lactic with a hint of vinegar. Lemons, green apple, cherries, and raspberries on the palate along with a solid tannic oak character.

M: The body is medium with a nice level of carbonation and a dry finish.

D: A really easy to drink sour, which is a nice change of pace from beers like Little Linda's or Flaming Fury which are nearly pure acid.

Received in a recent trade with SpeedwayJim. Generally split these with some friends or my wife...but it's after 1:00 a.m. and I'm really pining for a sour. So I guess I'll slowly put this one away as I watch all of the specials on John Wooden. Batch "F0/BB" and bottled on 2-10.

Poured (several times mind you) into my Portsmouth tulip. Pours a murky dark pine sap color with a beautiful, dense one finger head (that looks very similar to a foamy hot chocolate. Hangs around for quite some time and leaves a small amount of lacing on the side of my glass at the beginning. As the head recedes, it leaves interesting "clumps" on the surface. By the last pour this one has left all kinds of thick patchy lace on my glass.

Definitely smells like it is going to lean toward the tart side of the spectrum. Some sour cherries and a little bit of funk are the major players that I uncover. As it warms up a bit, I get some other sweeter fruits as well, but can't specifically place them. A tiny bit of vinegar on the nose as well, but nothing detracting.

Yup, definitely leans toward the tart side (which is just fine by me). A bit of sweetness up front, but sour cherry jumps right in (there are no cherries used in this beer, by the way). Other mouth puckering flavors emerge, the more I drink. The wood is obvious as well, however I'm missing the vanilla. This is a light bodied beer that really is quite easy to drink...I am having no problems putting it away by myself, and I'm already digging into my fridge for something else. I do enjoy the finish as it vanishes quickly leaving just that telltale tartness in the corners of my mouth.

I was quite impressed with the Barrel Select. This is a quality brew that I will seek out yet again.

Thanks to several generous BAs for the CLBS hook-up. BTW, if you are shipping this brew, tape the cap real tight with electrical tape, and wrap it in a bag before packaging. I have seen a few leakers, so better safe than sorry.

A - Pours a deep murky brown hue, with a strange patchy white head replete with an exceptionally varied assortment of bubbles. Mysterious looking.

S - Wow. A very rich earthy, musty, woody and quite tart aroma is punctuated with cinnamon and a pickled fruitiness; exceptionally complex.

T - Wow again. This is a very well-made brew. Outstanding. I find it hard to adequately describe; perhaps it has flavor nuances comparable to exceptionally tart applesauce. The sweet finish is followed by a lactic-briny aftertaste that lingers tantalizingly. A masterful balance of barrel-aging, base-beer brewing, and batch-blending.

M - Well-carbonated. Sometimes too well-carbonated. Lighter-medium in body with a richness and a dynamic flavor progression from start to finish.

D - Awesome stuff; very well assembled. I want more. And more. And more...

Cloudy Brown color. smells super sour and funky. the taste is sweet and sour,very sour. a nice balance between the two. the tartness makes you want to go back for more after each sip. Mothfeel is crisp with medium carbonation, although the bottle was a gusher upon opening. really high drinkability in my opinion....but usually anything that's this good i like to enjoy a lot of. a really great beer.
