Named after the little birds that fly by the brewery looking for grain after the weather turns cold, this was originally to be a Fall/Winter seasonal. Clearly we underestimated the market for this smooth and malty brown ale, and we have decided to keep it for year round enjoyment.

On tap at The Old Toad in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a dark-ish golden brown color, with a small head, and a bit of lacing.

This smells like roasty bitter coffee, caramel, and herbal hops.

This is solid enough for Captain Lawrence, a brewery that hasn’t been super relevant lately. There’s a nice coffee-esque bitterness, some bittersweet caramel, and a dry hoppy finish. It’s nothing you haven’t seen a million times, but it’s done well.

This is light bodied, crisp, and clean, with a good drinkability.

This was pleasant enough, worth a look if you happen across it.

Cask at the GBBF 2008. Brown colour. Nice aroma, malts, caramel, hops. The flavour is slightly less interesting, some fruitiness and malts, but like most brown ales it lacks hops. Drank it too warm though.

Draught @ Brew City (they called it Mass Pike Brown Ale): This one pours a clear brown color. There was a finger of a light tan head. Some lacing. Malty and somewhat nutty aroma. the taste is very good. Some roast, slightly bitter, nuttiness, toasted malts, faint biscuit. Nice.

Poured into a nonic pint glass, the appearance had a dark brown color with a slim finger’s worth of an off-white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. Sly lace. The aroma had some nuttiness and earthiness up front and then some caramel and toffee malts in the background. The flavor leads with the nuts, somewhat sweet with a gentle roast in the background. Sly crisp sweet to roasty aftertaste with a semi-creamy sort of dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Good carbonation. ABV feels good for what it says. Overall, good brown ale worthy of partaking again.

Not sure how I have missed reviewing this great beer that I have been enjoying for years from my favorite brewery... oh wel here goes...

Enjoyed on draft at the brewery and now froem a 1/2 growler (squeeler?) at home an hour later.

Pours the expected darker brown, mocha cap and leaving nice looking low sheeting and ample fields of sheeting all over the glass.

Milk chocolate nose...leads to the yummy first sip...I love this stuff...more chocolate, smooth an creamy mouthfeel...simply delicious brown ale...more chocolate, soft and smooth dark malts...sadly the Captain does not bottle this nectar anymore...gotta get it on draft at your local bar or at the source...go get some

bottle of Capt. Lawrence purchased Mar. 2016 poured into straight sided glass (highball glass).

This beer looks great. It is ruby brown with a tan head, and leaves a nice collar. Flavor is very mild, with a modest sweet malt component and balancing hops. I was hoping for a little more body in this beer.

Not to much fun for my tastebuds.

On tap at Rattle n Hum, NYC. My order kicked the keg so the appearence is probably not the norm. Slight haze in the coppery color with an exaggerated head that left a dense raft of foam. The aroma, though vague was all malt which carried into the flavor. I'd put this at the high end of the brown ale genre, though the texture was slightly lacking. Balanced & inoffensive, but IMO the unobtrusiveness works against it. Perhaps because I'm more a porter/stout guy, this may be better recieved by the ale crowd.
