American Brown Ale |  4.80% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Named after the little birds that fly by the brewery looking for grain after the weather turns cold, this was originally to be a Fall/Winter seasonal. Clearly we underestimated the market for this smooth and malty brown ale, and we have decided to keep it for year round enjoyment.

We pour a brew of reddish, orange amber coloring. It holds a three finger head of cakey tan bubbles. Retention is nice, leaving sheets, patterns, and pockets of equally as cakey lacing down the sides of the glass. There is a definite chill haze, but no sediment is noted. Carbonation appears medium. The nose shows chalky, partially roasty caramel malts, and light adjuncts. Baker’s yeast adds bite and sourness, while white flour adds dryness. Otherwise there are light metallics, cooling vanillas, and nutmeg to add spice and round things out. Our first impression is that there is nice sweetness and twang of tannins, but otherwise things are relatively mute. As we sip, the flavoring opens with a souring roasted grain, light caramels, hints of lemon rind, and baker’s yeast. The middle peaks with metallic, slightly adjuncty grain, more roasty caramels, and saltiness. The finish comes as more of the same, with salt, toffee sugars, lemon tea-like tannins, and a far off wood barreling. The aftertaste breathes of lemon rind, drying tannins, caramel malts, musk, yellow mustard bite, and more adjuncty twang. The body is medium, and the carbonation is lighter end. The mouth is cooled and lightly coated with froth, and a very faint astringency down the tongue. There is nice slurp, sip, froth, and glug to each sip. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks easily.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the rich coloring. The hues were beautiful, and seemed to perfectly capture the seasonal imagery laid forth by the brewery’s description. The nose and flavoring, however, were comparatively weak. While they lacked a general robustness, they gave generous adjuncty grain throughout, making for a cheaper, quicker-seeming brew.

Ruby brown amber color with a small beige head. Gentle carbs.
Appearance is rather dull looking.
Aroma is pleasent with some roasted malts. There is also some sutle nuts too in the aroma.
There is a sweetness too.
The taste is involving with a hint of roasted malts and bready grains and... do I detect some smokiness.
An engaging beer and a beer with some character.

Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass. Best by Aug notched on label. Single purchased at Oliver's Beverage (ALbany, NY).

A: Chestnut brown with 1-finger of beige head with decent retention but only spotty lacing.

S: Chocolate and prune-raisin aromas are strongest with some herbal and soft citrus and floral aromas.

T: THe flavor is malty with a fairly sharp but not overwhelming bitterness. The floral hops come through in the finish. The chocolate maltiness grows through the drink with some soft coffee as well. Dark malt flavors of caramel and raisin build through the middle. Low-moderate bitterness.

M: A little too spritzy on the carbonation but good medium body.

O: An inobtrusive brown ale with a light AMerican hops kick. Nothing spectacular but solid and very drinkable.
