Had on tap out of a 20oz pint glass at The Ginger Man in South Norwalk, CT (amazing place to get solid and rare craft beers on tap and by the bottle, plus rare whiskys!)
First impression was that it was a nice straw color, a little different from my usual IPAs, but good coloration nonetheless.
The smell (as a coffee lover) was intoxicating, very rich fresh-ground coffee smell, but not overpowering, followed by a lot of fresh hops.
The taste was solid, if not overly impressive. Very dry at first, followed by a good mix of fresh coffee and hops. Good balance of alcohol and flavor, but was missing a little more malt to make the coffee experience richer.
I think that a Coffee IPA can work if executed properly, and the Captain Lawrence iteration (my first to be honest) is solid and definitely worth a try.

Sampled at the brewery.
A. Pours a straw gold with a half finger of eggshell white head and good lacing.
S. It'll definitely wake you up if you haven't had this style before. Bright citrus appears and is instantly shoved aside by dark, roasty coffee beans. These notes don't necessarily play well together. There is a brightness to the IPA that just doesnt meld well with the coffee. Were this a DIPA with a heftier malt bill, it might work better.
T. Same problem as the nose but exaggerated. Piney hops and dry coffee grounds. Really dry, almost ashy finish. And yet, it's not overwhelming. There is a softness and balance that is to be commended here. The notes just conflict.
M. Crisp, carbed, and light.
O. It's not bad, I just have to ask: "Why?" Make me a coffee beer, make me an IPA, but please dont mix the two. I think they accomplished what they set out to do and they did an admirable job. But chalk up this test batch as one that was never going to work from the moment it was conceived.
