Typical Mellow Mushroom decor with late 60's and 70's psychadelia. Good beer and good food. 32 taps all craft with updated seasonals and several breweries and styles represented. All Mellow Mushrooms are hit or miss with service and this particular one on this particular day was a miss. I showed up after a conference at about 3:00. Just a few people in the restraunt and the only people at the bar were workers who either just got off of thier shift or were about to begin. I had to ask, often more than once, for my beer. And, I had to track someone down to take my order. I drank a couple of pints and then had to go look for someone to find out what had happened to my food. They forgot to put the order in. Then I had to track someone down to go get my food. That said the beer and calzone were good.

It's a Mellow Mushroom. Good vibes, family friendly... as independent as a chain can feel.

All beers I have had there have tasted very fresh. Very professional, clean draft system. Never tasted any off flavors due to lack of line cleaning. Never had any issues with dirty glassware.

Service has rarely been a problem. I usually sit at the bar. Bartenders are friendly, prompt, and knowledgeable. They will find the answer to questions about any beer even if they don't know, rather than making something up... I appreciate that. When I opt for table dining the service has been excellent as well.

Selection is hands down consistently the best in Winston Salem as of 2014 as many WSNC beer savvy residents will agree. Buyer is incredibly knowledgeable about craft beer, the industry and what is available in local distribution. Pretty much every bombshell, allocated keg that becomes available in the area finds a home at Mellow. Vertical tappings, casks, special keg tappings, and great Randall action are a regular occurrence.

Food is great. Most people have eaten at a Mellow so I won't elaborate.

Reasonable prices on most craft beer, and great prices on special release/higher end kegs.

Overall Mellow Winston is a blessing for the rapidly growing Winston Salem craft beer scene. Right now it is one of the few bars that has a clear, consistent vision to providing the best kegs available given the local distribution on a regular basis. My #1 place to go in town when I have the time to go grab a few brews.

The beer selection at Mellow Mushroom varies from location to location. The Winston-Salem location has a good selection of craft beers on tap and in bottles/cans. There are several taps dedicated to the brewery of the month, and they occasionally have some of the less available releases on tap. The food is standard for the chain, so if you've been to another location you know what to expect. The chain is family friendly, and it's nice to be able to have a good beer at a restaurant that will also please the kids.

I love me some mellow mushroom. This is the one right down the street from Foothills that I never go to cause I always go to foothills, lol. But today I decided to go in for lunch. Great location and I was able to sit down right away. Ordered up a nice small pizza and enjoyed the view. Great list of taps that really reflected the areas taste very nicely. It got busy really quickly though as it was lunchtime downtown. Friendly staff though as always the food can be a little pricey but it is well worth it. Overall a really solid place as always and one I always enjoy.

Mellow Mushroom is one of my favorite places to eat in Winston-Salem. I love the pizza and they have one of the best beer menus in the city. On the weekends its usually crowded, but with a great selection of beers on tap who cares, it gives you the opportunity to drink more beer. In addition to a great tap selection they also have a petty good selection of bottles which include Samuel Smith's and Chimay. My only complaint in regards to their beer selection is that I wish they would have more high gravity beers. They usually have around 5 on tap, but I would like to see a couple more, especially some more imperial stouts. However, the last time I was there did have Bell's Expedition stout. As far as the pizza is concerned it is easily in my top 3 favorite pizzas. I highly recommend this establishment.

I've been here a few times, but never gave it a review. Alot of the times the service is hit or miss, but today's stop was stellar. I sat at the "bar" and the guy working there was quick and helpful. Got the steak and cheese calzone. Excellent. I've always been pleased with the food whenever I've stopped at one of these places.

This specific 'Shroom has 32 beers on tap. Nice! I saw some from Rogue, Avery, DFH, Starr Hill, SN, Bell's, Foothills, Natty Greene's, etc. It looked as if the brews came out in frosted glasses. Seriously?! With a stellar lineup like they had, I'm surprised they stooped so low. Ah well. Still a great place to stop for a great beer. Recommend.

mellow mushroom OH I know you well!
I have been to lots and lots of Mellow mushrooms! This one is somewhat new.
I am simply NOT A FAN of the Pizza here, but i am a huge fan of the BEER...30 taps!
I drank enough to ALMOST try the pizza, but after trying the pizza all over NC and even a couple of times in VA I know better!
Good tap selection, a couple of things I had not heard of before.
Winston Salem needs something like this, good beer on draft, and a laid back atmosphere. With this place and Foothills I hope we are seeing the sign of more to come! Is the Mellow Mushroom a Beer Mecca???? Time will tell, but one thing is for sure It's the closest thing to one Winston has!

Not as hippie-ish in decor as other Mellow Mushrooms out there (more '50s art deco), the vibe is still there and the pizza remains outstanding. The service was good, though our waitress forgot our salad. No worry, it happens.

But what about the beer? For certain, it's an impressive beer list. Could use a few more Belgians, but for a decent selection of U.S. micros, there was plenty to choose from. It's nice that they have more taps than bottles, including seasonal Post Road pumpkin ale (which isn't near as good as Cottonwood's pumpkin). Victory, Dogfish Head, Terrapin, North Coast, Rogue and Ommegang are just some of the breweries represented. I had two DFH 90 Mins (on tap!) and they were as delicious as expected. Sure, selection could've been even better, but what's there to complain about? No beer lover will go thirsty here...nor hungry. A great night out, and a place we'll return to again.

I live in Winston-Salem, but I have lived in the Asheville area for a significant portion of my life. I was extremely excited when I learned that a Mellow Mushroom would be built here. This is a restaurant where you go for the food and the atmosphere, not really the beer. However, you will be pleasanly suprised at the selection and the nice setup of the bar area. The food is remarkable, however slightly inferior to the quality of the Asheville location. This is probably due to the fact that I visited it soon after it had opened and all the "kinks" had not yet been worked out. A must stop on a beer tour of the triad.

I have been to Mellow Mushroom's in other locations and always enjoyed it,this I have to say was different.Understanding this place is still new my wife and I figured it woul be busy but the fact that it was busy to go along with the circus of how the tables were served for lunch almost made us walk out but we had already paid for our pizza. You walk in up to the counter straight in thru the door and give your order and take a number and luckily find a table,we found a table faster than I thought we would and sat and watched the poor servers look around for their table numbers one in particular wandered around for at least 15 minutes. Now to the beer section well there was no bartender at the bar for the first 20 minutes I was there when I finally went up there to get a beer I ordered a Flying Dog imperial porter a decent brew for fricken $5 bucks! The lunch setup is nothing short of a farse there I wanted to walk out as fast as possible,we got our pizza and left.

This was my first time ever being to a M.M. I was pleasantly suprised.

My friend told me he "thought they had beer," but I wasnt expecting the excellent selection I got. Here goes. On tap was: Amstel light (really the only sub-par draft they had), anchor steam, bass, brooklyn black chocolate stout, brooklyn brown, brooklyn lager, dogfish 60 min, flying dog doggie style, f.d. gonzo, foothills rainbow trout esb, foothills salem gold, foothills stout, fullers esb, fullers london porter, guinness, highland gaelic ale, highland oatmeal porter, natty greene buck shot amber ale, natty greene pale ale, newcastle, pilsner urquell, red oak, red seal amber ale, rogue american amber, rogue dead guy, rogue hazelnut, sierra nevada, victory golden monkey, victory hop devil, victory lager, victory pils, youngs special london ale.

Bottles: 15 available, most not worth mentioning save for blue moon, and maybe red stripe, or yuengling, if you like their lager.

Pretty cool, (somewhat) relaxed atmosphere. A slightly-decorated pizza parlot.

Friendly service, despite the hectic crowding. Apparently I was there in the 1st or 2nd week of this place being opened.

Very reasonable prices. $2.50 bottles all the time, and $3.50 pints, or $13 pitchers. The beers that are above 7% (Brooklyn BC stout, Flying dog gonzo, Victory golden monkey) are $5 a pint, $19 a pitcher.

I have been waiting for a Mellow Mushroom to open near hear since I moved back to this area over 5 years ago. Now a great one opens downtown. Fantastic.

Atmosphere: So far, packed, lively, jumping, a little loud, but definitely completely alive! They really care about providing quality beer, at a reasonable price. The owners want people to come, where concerned about parking and other issues. There is parking on the street and multiple parking decks within 1-2 blocks of the place.

Quality: There bottle selection quality could use some work, but with 32 draft choices of all quality beer, who's going to drink from the bottle? Come on with 4 Victory, 2 Highland, 3 Foothills, 2 Natty Greene's, 2 Fullers, 2 Youngs, 3 Rogue, 3 Brooklyn, and many other beers it's hard to ask for more. Sure I'd like to see a DIPA, but they've got Brooklyn Black Chocolate and Victory Storm King stouts on draft right now? How can you not love that!

Service: It was the second day they were open, and they were completely packed. So there were some service issues. Mostly due to the fact the kitchen was having a hard time keeping up. I hope to revisit soon and be able to raise this mark atleast above a 4.

Selection: From Victory and Brooklyn Lager to Highland Gaelic and Young's London Pride, to Brooklyn BCS and Victory Storm King they not only have many breweries, but many styles. Victory Golden Monkey is the only Belgian style they have and they don't have a DIPA. Other than that, the selection great, especially for the area. And they are already talking about changing some out. Especially since they have some seasonals on tap.

Food: I love Mellow Mushroom's food, and this one is no different. Others may not like it as much, but I like it. They have some funky pizzas, but plenty of choices. And I love the spring water dough they use. Their Garlic Butter & Parmesan cheese spring water pretzels are fantastic when hot.

Value: Good prices. $3.50 per pint for everything below 7%, $5 for those above. Not the best strategy in my mind, but easy to know the costs and still a pretty good value.

Can't wait till my next trip.

First off, let me say that the addition to Mellow Mushroom (in my opinion) is going to rejuvinate downtown more than anyone expects. Add to the fact that it is within easy walking distance of Foothills and Dudley's, and a very short drive (or long walk) to Sixth and Vine, and you see a very different downtown than the one I remember from my undergrad days. My only real complaint about the location is the parking. There is only metered street parking available... but good news: $0.25 pays for 2 hours.... so its not exactly a big deal.

As far as the atmosphere goes, imagine Mellow Mushroom-Asheville mixed with the brushed steel of a big city look. A great combination in my opinion... fits perfectly in the arts district of downtown W-S.

I was especially surprised and pleased to find that there were zero quality problems on the first night... very nice.

Same goes with the service. The waiters were very attentive, and the bartenders seemed extremely nice. I noticed one of the bartenders from Silver Moon Saloon, which is a bar right up the street.

I'm going to stick to talking about beer selections, since the food selection is the same as every other MM I believe. Tap selection is as follows:

Anchor Steam
Bass Ale
Brooklyn Black Chocolate
Brooklyn Brown
Brooklyn Lager
Dogfish 60 Minute IPA
Foothills Rainbow Trout
Foothills Salem Gold
Foothills Total Eclipse
Fullers ESB
Fullers London Porter
Guinness
Amstel Light
Highland Gaelic Ale
Highland Oatmeal Porter
Natty Greene Buck Shot
Natty Greene Pale Ale
Newcastle
Pilsner Urquell
Red Oak
Red Seal
Rogue American Amber
Rogue Dead Guy Ale
Rogue Hazelnut Brown
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
Victory Golden Monkey
Victory Hop Devil IPA
Victory Lager
Victory Prima Pils
Youngs Special London Ale
Flying Dog Gonzo
Flying Dog Doggie Style

Additionally, there are some macro bottles (PBR, BMC, etc)

Prices are $5 per pint for any brew over 7%, $3.50 otherwise.
Additionally, you can get pitchers of whatever brew you want, however I do not recall the prices.
I believe he's going to start offering a happy hour of sorts, but cannot confirm this at the moment.

All in all, a wonderful additional to Winston-Salem. If you go in, make sure and say 'hi' to Jim and his wife, the owners. They're great people with a healthy interest in craft brews, and a real commitment to making this restaurant as good as it can be.

Cheers.
