Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass.

Attractive to look at. The pour produces a two-finger thick head with frothy, chewy cream-colored head. The head persists well and leaves sticky lace on the sides of the glass the same height as the original head. A thin lace remains atop the liquid long after the pour. The liquid is dark black with some transparency and hues of brown. I don't see much carbonation working through the beer.

Certainly very chocolatey and almost Gnutell-like on the nose. There's sweet malt, vanilla and even tiny hints of coffee. It smells very dessert-like. Interestingly, the beer isn't nearly as sweet as the nose led me to believe. I do still get chocolate, but the beer has a very nutty flavor, similar to a nut brown. I continue to get hints of vanilla and a dark chocolate aftertaste, both of which I enjoy. Perhaps the one limitation of this beer is the thin body, which certainly doesn't resemble a shake and works against the otherwise tasty flavors. The beer is smooth, but lacks the creaminess I'd like.

I like this beer, but would enjoy it much more if the body were thicker.

Pours a two-finger brown head that fades quickly leaving no lace. Black color, no highlights. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Good chocolate nose and flavor is sweet/roasted chocolate. Smooth. $2.35 for a 12oz bottle Bert's Better Beers Hooksett, NH. Best by Aug 21, 2014.

Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a tulip. Enjoy by Sep242014 on bottle neck. Purchased at World Market (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Very dark brown with 2-finger beige, foamy head with decent retention and a solid valence of lace around the top of the glass.

S: Huge chocolate aromas with light roast malts and a little bit of caramel in there too. I don't get much of the coffee noted on the label, but the bittersweet dark chocolate and cocoa aromas are heavenly. A touch of earthy hops bitterness comes through.

T: The flavor is good but unfortunately has a chemical nature through the finish. The maltiness is still humongous chocolate, mostly bitter dark but a little caramel sweetness moves through too. There is a touch of bitterness, mostly earthy in nature, keeping this from being syrupy. The finish though has a weird chemical almost sour woody character to it that doesn't finish the beer off as nicely as the rest of it that precedes. Still a good beer. No alcohol and no yeast could possibly push through the chocolate haze this leaves.

M: The lightness is surprising and is sort of a positive and a negative -- the lightness keeps it from seems cloying and syrupy but it also prevents it from being as decadent and sumptuous as it could be.

O: Shake is a good chocolate porter with big chocolate aromas and a good chocolate flavor punch, only done in somewhat by the artificial, chemical character in the finish.

Chocolaty brown beer capped with a khaki foam that recedes into a thin cap with curtains of lace. It smells like a chocolate milkshake with a bit of cold pressed coffee. Excellent. Taste is lightly bitter, milk chocolate, some espresso. Light sweetness is washed away for a clean mild chocolaty finish. Medium body is creamy. This is a tasty beer.

I had this beer on-tap in a big taster glass at Oregon Brewers Festival.

Appearance: dark brown, nearly black with no haze. Quite an attractive beer.

Smell: rich, sweet chocolate with a lot of vanilla -- it's very desserty. However, there's this almost watered-down element to it which kind of takes a little away from the nice chocolate character.

Taste: it's quite sweet, rather like a milk stout. Chocolatey and creamy flavor as well; I like it.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good carbonation and good creaminess. This works for me.

Overall: a dessert beer, to be sure, but I really like it. I will definitely be looking for it in bottles.
