From a 650 ml bottle (# 1899 out of 2100) into a tulip.
A-The beer is a nice hue of amber-garnet with a dense half-finger of foam. The head is light tan in color and the retention is quite good for a beer with more than 12% ABV. The liquid is murky and I don't see any carbonation.
S-The aroma is pretty intense at first whiff with big notes of caramel, molasses, golden raisin, and a buttery toffee sweetness. I don't sniff much in the way of whiskey barrel, but I do pick up a surprising amount of leafy astringency and a light hit of tart, white grape fruitiness.
T-The beer opens with an intense sweetness like you would expect. Notes of caramel, toffee, and vanilla are a good intro. Then things tail off as that strange leafy note turns downright bitter on the palate and leaves a long finish that reminds me of aspirin. Odd and not very pleasing. Not much in the way of barrel character, either.
M-The body is medium in heft and pretty nondescript. There is still some carbonation left in this 2-year-old bottle, but not much.
O-This is a good looking beer and the smell had some potential, but the barrel flavor was mostly absent and I could not get over the bitter finish on this thing. It did not taste oxidized, but I am wondering what was going on with this bottle to give the beer that finish.

22oz bottle $18. Amber color, ok head. Aroma is mostly English Barleywine with a touch of alcohol. Flavor is hops, alcohol, slight bit of whiskey but really sort of disappointing how little barrel influence there is. I almost couldn't tell this was barrel aged and the body was sort of thin.

Bottle pour at the pre-FWIBF bottle share held at the Adelaide Inn in Paso Robles, CA.
Thanks to Wowcoolman for sharing this one.
Bottle # 535/2100.
Pours a clear orange with a foamy bone head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, toffee, bourbon, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and bourbon flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of wood bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with a nice smell, but there is a better barrel aged presence in the flavor.
