Pours a finger of light tan head over a brilliant ruby old-copper liquid. Gorgeous. Smells bourbon, caramel, sherry oxidation, leather, pear, vanilla, and strong clean alcohol sting. A dash of drying hoppy grassiness. Light Belgian candi-sugar, sage (but in a good way, not grassy herbally), light bright cherries, fruit bread, cinnamon.

Tastes candied pear, very hot (though clean sting), strong tannic that is just below off-putting levels. Light peppery, orange cream, light-colored caramel, waxy oak. What starts briefly sweet is over-run by the alcohol and barrel edge. If this beer had more thickness, it would hang on the tongue a bit longer and the sweet would hang around longer like I think it ought to. Light in the mouth and strong fine carbonation foams up on the papilla. Really a nice beer. Great sipper on this cold late December evening. Great balance between dark brooding wood character and light fruity esters accompanied by bright oxidation character.

Easily the best beer I've ever had from Boulder Beer Company. Just needs a bit more viscosity to step into the truly amazing realm. (1,106 characters)

Bottle pour at the pre-FWIBF bottle share held at the Adelaide Inn in Paso Robles, CA.

Thanks to Wowcoolman for sharing this one.

Bottle # 535/2100.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy bone head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, toffee, bourbon, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and bourbon flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of wood bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with a nice smell, but there is a better barrel aged presence in the flavor. (708 characters)

22oz bottle $18. Amber color, ok head. Aroma is mostly English Barleywine with a touch of alcohol. Flavor is hops, alcohol, slight bit of whiskey but really sort of disappointing how little barrel influence there is. I almost couldn't tell this was barrel aged and the body was sort of thin. (291 characters)
