The list of beers that I’ve seen around my beer stores but never tried is longer than I thought, even uncomfortably long. I eagerly embraced New Belgium, dabbled in O’Dell and my first 750ml bottles were almost entirely Avery beers. Boulder Beer never had the same draw, and I’m ashamed to say, the label art kept me away. The appearance of a Boulder mix pack at a recent barbeque was the perfect opportunity to descale my eyes and see the beer behind the wrapper. The Mojo was the best of the lot, offering a surprisingly deep and delicious IPA. As a hop-phobe I found the aroma to be a welcome shock - deep scents of pine, honey and caramel malts. The taste reigns in the ferocious hops bitterness found in some IPAs, instead coupling it with more drops of pine sap flavors to offer a well-rounded, balanced beer. The sugars are sweet, surfing unctuously on a medium body. A sip and a glance at a watch later find a long aftertaste where the dreaded astringency is left behind, slowly dying and wailing as the other flavors evaporate. Aside from this unwelcome loiterer I am wholly impressed. It always feels good to find another drinkable IPA, especially from a local brewer, and even better, at a barbeque with a box of bottled surprises.
