If you liked the Mojo IPA, you'll like Mojo Risin' about the same. The same is true if you disliked either of the Mojos.

Unfortunately, I fell into the later category of people who truly disliked this beer.

First and foremost, it's a barley wine, not a DIPA. Perhaps from a brewing perspective, the folks at Boulder would disagree, but from a flavor profile on the consumer's tastes, it's the farthest departure from what I know to be a DIPA.

Also, the finish tastes more like vinegar than beer.

Probably not going to revisit any more offerings from this brewery.

This beer comes in a copper golden color.

The aroma has a huge earthy aroma with pine. It smells "old" if that means anything.

The taste follows and is almost like a barleywine. It's very bitter, but not really of citrus hops, but more of that deep earthy resin character. So deep that it's almost like bitter tea leaves.

I had this on cask, so possibly that's an issue. Without carbonation, this herbal bittering just overwhelms the palate. It's interesting for sure, but too acrid.

Draught @ Mad Mex: This one pours a clear, slightly orangish golden color. It had just a wisp of an off-white head, yet still left a little lacing. The smell is good. It has a big hop nose. Lots of grapefruit and some pine notes. Not too bitter, but lots of hop flavor. Some grapefruit and biscuit flavors. There is some sweetness buried in there trying to break free. Nice.

Light amber with decent clarity. High protein content in the fluffy head makes for serious stickage. 4.0

Malty DIPA aroma. Orange, grapefruit, and lemon with a ripe booze wafting in. 3.5

Too much malt, too much booze. Barleywine-esque with notes of candy caramel, alcohol, and some lemon, agave, and white grapefruit flavors. Lemony and toast-malty make a funny combo. Not my cup of tea. 3.0

A little harsh in its strength. Kind of thick with medium-high carbonation. Tingles in the mouth. Mild stickiness. 3.0

Not too impressive. Laboring through my 12oz pour. 3.5

Got a growler of this at Party Town in Florence, Ky. Only $9.99!!

Pours a bright copper orange with a nice white head that is huge. Lacing continues to gain legs the whole glass.

Smells of beautiful hops, sweet malt, and citrusy. Very nice for a strong DIPA.

Great hop blast up front with notes of grass, lemon, grapefruit, and a sweet malt backbone that balances it out nicely. There is a bit of booze there, but it's to be expected in a 10.5% abv beer.

Mouthfeel is oily and bitter. Medium body with a great carbonation.

A nice DIPA that I will visit again on tap at this price. I would not pay the premium for a 4-pack due to the other wonderful beers out there that are superior and cheaper.

Had on tap at Rattle n Hum. Pours a clear dark copper color with a one finger light beige head with good retention and nice spotty swirly lacing.

Smells overwhelming of hops as it should. Strongly piney but maybe a hint of lemon. Great crisp hoppy scent.

Tastes just like it smells except bigger. Huge piney hops flavors all the way through- a nice pale malt backbone that balances out the hops. Barely any bitterness, just great hop flavors. A twinge of alcohol but barely noticeable for 10.5 abv.

Mouthfeel is normal for a DIPA- oily, light to medium bodied and light carbonation. Excellent on tap.

Boulder Brewing : Mojo Risin'

Pours a deep golden color with a soapy white head and all due lacing. Aroma of floral, citrusy hops and caramel like sweetness. In the taste, oily hop resins, grapefruit, some pine, and a solid bitterness round out the hop profile. The malt body is sweet, with notes of honey and brown sugar. Alcohol is there but tastes like only a fraction of what it is. Medium bodied feel, somewhat crisp and well carbonated. Overall, a solid IPA of great strength. Good.

Very nice pale copper color. White creamy head that lasted for a long time. Like, a really long time. The beer was too cold for my liking so it’s been sitting in front of me for 30 minutes and the head is still there. The beer looked very carbonated. Active bubbles kept rising to the top. The head retention blew my mind.

Bitter grassy hops dominate. there is some citrus as well, but it gets pretty covered. Light bready malts. smells very good, but not crazy or overly impressive.

Bitter hops assault the palate and a good amount of booze follows, but I didn't get much of anything else. Boozy and messy finish.

Fairly smooth and not as bubbly as it looks.

I generally like most of Boulder's stuff, but this beer is just kind of a mess. Hopefully the bottle is better than the draught.

Appearance: it's not an especially pretty color but it looks like beer should so that's just fine. Leaves great lacing alll the way down. Head retention is very good considering that its a dipa and 10% abv.

Smells: bitter with a nice musky and sweet malt. Surprisingly Maluku smell considering the very hoppy taste.

Taste: it's bitter upfront. Grapefruit rind and floral. Big malt flavor comes in to keep the hops in check. Dark fruit and caramel. This beer changes as it warms. It balances out a bit as the underlying flavors develop. You start to notice a bit of biscuity malt on the exhale and more of a cut grass hop comes in.

Mf: it's a bit bubbly and carbonated, but thats okay because its thick, oily, and somewhat syrupy.

Overall? I like it. And it's has an awesome name!

Mojo Risin' pours out a clear golden tangerine with nice lacing left clinging to the glass as you drink the beer down.

The smell of this beer is a nice light floral and citrus smell (grapefruits and tangerines). The smell draws you in, but deceives you into believing you're not about to taste a 10% ABV hop-bomb of a beer.

The taste - despite a heavy dose of malts, surrenders its drinker to a full frontal assault of hop bitterness and alcohol taste. The hops do give notes of pine as well as grapefruit, lemon, and orange. Overall, it's a palate scorcher.

A - Orange colored beer with an off-white head and a bit of stick left on the sides.

S - Smells particularly malty and sugary. Some floral, citrus, and pine resin hops.

T - Not bad, a bit too sweet and sugary. The hops are mostly citrus and grapefruit, with some bittering on the end. Not exactly my thing, but it's not bad.

M - Gritty, medium bodied, active carbonation.

O - I'm not the hugest fan of this, but it's entirely drinkable and not bad.

Appearance-Refreshing orange looking body, little cloudy, carbonation bubbles floating up. 1 inch head that slowly dissipates, little lacing.

Smell-Citrus and Pine, Very light on the aroma, not picking up much else.

Taste-Big hop bitterness. Slight sweet and malty. Good amount of citrus and pine hops and a little spice, I even get a little chocolate. Better then I thought it would be after the aroma.

Mouthfeel-Sticky on the tongue, but not on the glass. Medium bodied bodied, a little over carbonated.

Overall-Good value for a 14oz pour, but wasn't blown away like other IIPAs. Glad I got to try it and would try it again if given the chance.

Pinkish/Orange color with no head off the tap. Carbonation was not evident.

Great nose of hops - floral, citrusy and piney with not much sweetness. The hops dominate but smell fantastic. No noticeable alcohol aroma for 10%.

Wow, floral grapefruit resiny pop up front that goes from start to finish. The hops stay on your breath and alcohol is evident on the back on the nose as well. Bitter on the finish but doesn't linger too long or turn you off for your next sip.
Even though this doesn't balance too well with the malt, its a double IPA so hops are expected.

Medium body, plenty crisp but the bitterness may be a bit for folks less accustomed to doubles/imperial hosting this much punch. no palate residue or harsh after taste.

Very satisfying, the alcohol showed up a bit later and left slight warming in the face. Drank most of it before dinner arrived - i enjoyed this brew a lot.

Had On Tap at Cock and Bull. My quest of the running of the taps continues.

A- a light tangerine orange. A nice bubbly eggshell white head That is oozing lace on my pint glass. Head settles to a oil spill film and is a nice cap for the color.

S- really toned down biscuits with a hint of mango hop aroma. Not much aroma to this beer. Not a good sign.

T- better than the nose. Sweet malts mix with very toned down tropical hops. Alcohol is very visible in the finish. Really not much if a hop bite for 10.5% .

M- medium to light, I would say light for such a big beer. Carbonation feels good. Not to dry, pretty balanced feel just like the rest of the beer.

Overall an ok iipa. There are more beers out there that are more extreme, but this beer is balanced. Not what I really care for in a iipa but to some people this might be there thing.

Pours a hazy gold with a white head. Nice lacing off a weak pour.

Aromas of citrus hops...and more hops. Slight astringent aroma.

You like hops? this is it...big grapefruit, grass and white bread malts. Nice alcohol warmth.

Med mouthfeel, sticky and dry. Abv% balanced well.

A nice hop bomb

Most double IPAs I have tried are darker in color and richer in the after taste. I enjoyed Mojo because it seems to be the opposite in my taste. the almost sweet taste hits my pallet first she the soft hoppy taste came after. A beer i could pour a glass of and sip for a while. 10.5% is pretty high for beers.

Served in a Tulip Glass at the Blue Dog in Chalfont. Found this review in the notes of my Blackberry- didn't have a date on it, but from the best of my recollection, this was sampled in early fall 2010.

A- Golden/Orangish hue, deeper on the Golden side in color (bronze?) Clear, not too hazy. 1/4 inch head that melted to a nice thick lace film.

S- sharp pine, slight malt- hints of grapefruit. Nice.

T- Up front, bitter piney hops; tangy citrus on the finish with slight (faint) hint of sweetness. A classic pine/citrus DIPA.

M- Full, fresh, pleasant feel- bubbly and refreshing.

D- If you are a DIPA fan, this is a must try. I could have sipped this all night, and would have happily paid the cab fare home.

served on-tap @ Egan's, Tuscaloosa, AL, into a pint glass
Quick Hits!

Pours a typical IIPA orange color. That orange/brown color that half of the style looks like. The foam is more or less one finger in size, looks kind of viscous, and might have a bit of orange inflected in the white.

You smell some Pine-Sol, a bit of soap, some orange peel, some Meyer lemon, lots of grass. The sweet-smelling malts come in pretty strongly; lots of caramel, lots of crystal. Too malty for my preference but it isn't offensive to me by any means.

This is actually pretty nice. I am surprised because it is very much malt-forward. Juicy, deep caramel & crystal malts inform every bit of this beer's flavor. The hops are somewhat strong but not harsh. The malt is what is harsh. The hops taste like the smell (with the soap being off-putting, sure, but everything else works), and the malts taste stronger than they smell. This achieves a sort of balance, but then again I tend to not love a balanced IIPA.

Mojo Risin' is, given the East Coast maltiness, appropriately thicker, creamier, than some IIPAs. It isn't a mouthfeel that I care for in this style of beer, but it works for this particular example of the style. Its drinkability suffers from the harsh maltiness and the huge 10.55 ABV.

Even if you don't like malt-forward IIPAs (I know I don't) it is worth trying Mojo Risin' if you see it on-tap. I think that it is easily Boulder's best beer.

Had this beer at my favorite watering hole served in a tulip glass.

A: Light orange, a little hazy, perfect 1/2 inch creamy head.

S: Citrus, Tangerine, not grapefruit, maybe some orange smoething else, maybe grass?

T: Very impressive, not over the top, the malt hits first so that the hops don't punch you too hard. The citrus hops come in next and are very pleasant, and hangs in there for a while, again not over the top. The alcohol comes through but at over 10% not too bad.

M: smooth and silky, but not oily. Some carbonation.

D: Well balanced DIPA, Very easy to drink a couple of these bad boys, a little too easy!

had on tap at the winking lizard in downtown cleveland OH.

A- poured a transparent golden copper color. white head that dissipated quickly. light to medium lacing.

S- a light caramel scent with a decent citrus hop scent.

T- same as smell but had a really nice bubble gum taste to it. really delicious. alcohol was hardly detectable for being 10+

M- medium/ light bodied. good carbonation.

D- wish i could of had one more but had to run for a concert (primus).

A-Left good lacing on my 10oz draft. Arroma was minimal, though I was a bit congested. Taste was good. Drinkability is a little low, due to the ABV of this brew. I'll drink it again, though I'll have to limit myself due to the alcohol content. Definitely quaffable!

Notes from 6/11/10

Pours a standard caramel color with a touch of red. There is a bit of haze preventing me from seeing through the glass. Good lacing but the head leaves something to be desired.

Not overwhelming either way in the nose, some hops, some malt...standard.

Overall, the taste is not bad but not great. Nothing stands out in this double. Pretty heavy on the bready malt and caramel malt taste. A bit malt overbalanced with some mild orange citrus hops and grassy finish.

Medium to full in the mouth, the aftertaste is clean. Low bitterness in the aftertaste.

The drinkability is average for a double. The redeeming quality of this beer is the high ABV which only feels like 7 or 8%.

Had on tap at Stoddard's in Boston.

Grapefruit, wet-grass, oranges, and melon, all underscored by a sweet malty aroma. Slightly subdued but still juicy and pungent.

Pours a medium hued amber with a thin head comprised of large bubbles; characteristic sticky lace.

Cereal malt, caramel, and residual sugars noticeable before a swell of herbal lemon grass, faint, earthy ginger, and grapefruit from amarillo and centennial hops, that balance but don't dominate the flavor. Interestingly enough, the flavor also exhibits a floral petal quality. Nevertheless, it has a malt centered finish with a tingle of bitterness that gets crushed underneath the sweet body, yet tingles way into the long and alcohol warming finish. Overall a nice flavor but the malt character is too sweet and dominating.

Very creamy med to full bodied with med carbonation. Tongue blanketing and drying, mouth encompassing, slightly salty; good for the style.

Drinkability remains high due to the true power of the bittering hops being obstructed by the heavy, sugary body. Overall a solid DIPA, but the malt character is too sweet and dominating.

Two days after I have this beer for the first time in a bottle I see it on draft at my local bar. As compared to the bottle:

I bought a bottle of this at New Beer Distributors in Manhattan's Lower East Side. I'm not sure why I can easily find many of Boulder's beers (i.e. IPA, Cold Hop) but I never see this one. So, naturally, I jumped at the chance at buying a bottle of this and was very glad i did.

This is one of the better double IPA's I've had. A little darker than the typical DIPA with great hop aroma, hop flavor and bitterness. Not quite as citrusy as a west coast and not as piney as something on the east coast. The alcohol is present but not overwhelming. A great balance double ipa.

The draft was not as interesting. Color and aroma were great but the flavor was not as outstanding as the bottle I had the other day.

Had this on-tap at a Mad Mex here in Philly. Served in a snifter glass. Appeared a hazy yellowish, slightly copper color. Strong hop aroma. Picked up hints of citrus, almost a lemon-like scent. Tasted rather sweet with good hop bitterness. Enjoyed this one rather leisurely. Thought it was a tad too bitter. Would have liked to see a bit more malty profile. The lemon-like quality stuck with me throughout the serving. A nice overall beer. The 10.50 ABV hit me nice and subtly.
