Poured from a bottle into a snifter glass; deep, dark black with a tan head. Aromas of coffee and chocolate dominate, with subtle notes of oak. Other less noticeable aromas come from vanilla and nut. What I like about the beer comes from the oatmeal, and it's the silky, smooth sensation as you get as you consume. There's a good balance of all the flavors and the alcohol, as this 8% beer does not come off as boozy at all. The beer gets better as it warms up, and by the end of the glass, it was much better than at the first sip. I really enjoyed this beer, and it's likely that I will have it again down the road.

one of the most oaky examples of this style I have encountered. thin and inky black in color, this beer doesn't have a ton of head, but what it does have is an incredible nose. it smells incredibly oak forward, almost more so than that dark roasted barley or alcohol I smell musty oak, deciduous and pungent. it carries over to the flavor too, but instead of complimenting the stout itself, it sort of takes over. the thinness of body also exacerbates this issue, which gives me a watery feel but a very intense woody flavor, an odd sensation on my palate. bitter in the finish with just a touch of toasted coconut island style flare in there, but there just isn't the depth here of some of the worlds best Russian imperials. I like the intensity of the oak, but it limits drinkability, especially when this warms up. o good beer overall though, and one of boulder beers best offerings really.
