A: Deep brown, very clear. Ruby highlights on all edges of the glass. Soft barely tan head dissipates quickly. Soft swirl brings it back.
S: First and second sniffs were full of DMS. Later, roast, but not enough...hints of cocoa, hop aroma low. Vegetals are still present.
T: Metallic. Sharp hop bitterness quickly fades to maltly vanilla sweetness. Hops dominate the finish, but the oak is noticeable into the aftertaste and quite pleasant.
M: Medium mouthfeel. Quite smooth on the tongue. Medium carbonation.
D: Not bad. If this was priced similarly to Sam Smith's Imperial Stout, I'd have a fridge full of this. As it is, it's about $3 too much a bottle.

one of the most oaky examples of this style I have encountered. thin and inky black in color, this beer doesn't have a ton of head, but what it does have is an incredible nose. it smells incredibly oak forward, almost more so than that dark roasted barley or alcohol I smell musty oak, deciduous and pungent. it carries over to the flavor too, but instead of complimenting the stout itself, it sort of takes over. the thinness of body also exacerbates this issue, which gives me a watery feel but a very intense woody flavor, an odd sensation on my palate. bitter in the finish with just a touch of toasted coconut island style flare in there, but there just isn't the depth here of some of the worlds best Russian imperials. I like the intensity of the oak, but it limits drinkability, especially when this warms up. o good beer overall though, and one of boulder beers best offerings really.
