22 oz Bottle, 51 degrees, poured into goblet. Dated "enjoy by 2/11/14."
A: Nice, dark, with a tannish head. quickly dissipates, but lacing stays for the duration....
S: coffee, chocolate. smokey oak.
T: Chocolate, coffee, oak, lighter than is looks.
M: nice carbonation, light in the palate, bitter chocolate finish.
O: Not bad, glad I tried one. No room in cellar to add one for later, but may age well, deepening in flavor...

one of the most oaky examples of this style I have encountered. thin and inky black in color, this beer doesn't have a ton of head, but what it does have is an incredible nose. it smells incredibly oak forward, almost more so than that dark roasted barley or alcohol I smell musty oak, deciduous and pungent. it carries over to the flavor too, but instead of complimenting the stout itself, it sort of takes over. the thinness of body also exacerbates this issue, which gives me a watery feel but a very intense woody flavor, an odd sensation on my palate. bitter in the finish with just a touch of toasted coconut island style flare in there, but there just isn't the depth here of some of the worlds best Russian imperials. I like the intensity of the oak, but it limits drinkability, especially when this warms up. o good beer overall though, and one of boulder beers best offerings really.
