On tap at Surly's Darkness Day at the brewery. Served in a 8 oz. clear plastic cup.

Appearance: Color is a somewhat hazy golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of off white head that slowly fades into a patchy layer. Decent lacing for a plastic cup.

Smell: A pretty hop forward aroma with good hints of citrus and some rather subtle smoke. Citrus hops upfront with hints of orange peel, grapefruit, mango, tangerine, pineapple, and lemon. Grassy hop hints as well as some pine. Pale malt with some almost Brett like hints of yeast along with hints of grain, cracker, and biscuit. Smoke and chiles come through but are subtle compared to the citrus. A solid aroma.

Taste: Hoppy and juicy like the aroma but with more of the chillies and smoke heat coming through. Upfront juicy citrus hops with notes of mango, grapefruit, orange, pineapple, lemon, and tangerine. Some earthy hops with notes of grass and spicy pine. Pale malt with notes of grains, biscuit, caramel, cracker, and more of that slightly funky yeast. The Puya Chiles and smoke notes come through much stronger towards the finish and linger into the aftertaste. A very nice taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Nicely juicy with a moderate amount of heat on the finish from the Chiles.

Overall: A pretty good twist on a West Coast style IPA. Good juicy hop taste with an interesting kick from the Chiles.

Served on tap at darkness day. I dig the homage to the shenanigans that I witnessed at the 2012 darkness day. The appearance is a medium amber with nice clarity and almost no head. The aroma starts very hoppy with citrus being the predominant note. The smoke comes through next and kind of clashed with the hop profile. The taste is an adventure... Hoppy up front, then a distinct transition to smoke, followed by a building pepper heat at the end. All of the ingredients are there but don't really seem to go together. The mouthfeel is light with high carbonation. Overall, this is unique and different, but I don't think smoke or heat bring anything to the table of a nice tropical IPA.

I hardly ever pass up this beer when it's on tap. One of my favorite brews by surly. Going to keep this review short and simple.

This smoked ipa is hot. Not hot enough to make you sweat, but hot enough for you to feel it. Tons of different pepper flavors explore in your mouth. Bready malt backbone to keep things in check. Floral and grassy hops, but nothing citrusy or tropical shows. This beer brings the heat. Fun to drink. A pint is definitely manageable.
