On tap at Surly's taproom. 16 oz. serving in a shaker glass.

Appearance: Color is a dark blackish brown. Moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of off white head that fades into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing.

Smell: An earthy and fairly toasty hop forward aroma with good hints of pine and oak. Good mix of hop aromas upfront with some earthy hints of grass and spicy pine resin. Subtle citrus hints of grapefruit and orange peel. Roasted malts with hints of chocolate, toasted bread, grains, biscuit, yeast, and peat. Good scent of oak and wood as well. A nicely balanced Black IPA aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a good balance of earthy hops and toasty malt with some oak and peat. Upfront taste of earthy, herbal, and floral hops with notes of spicy pine resin and grass. Light citrus hop notes of orange peel and grapefruit. Solid notes of oak and wood blend in. Dark malts with notes of toasted bread, chocolate, grains, biscuit, peat, and yeast. A really solid Black IPA taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Fairly oily and spicy with a drying finish.

Overall: A very good twist on the Black Ale/IPA style. Has the piney hop and roasty malt presence you expect for the style along with some nice oak notes. (1,279 characters)

Appearance: Murky brown with a thin light tan head.

Aroma: Toasty/sweet malt similar to Bender.

Taste: Very much a hopped up brown ale. Some good earthy hop character but overall sweet caramel toasted malt.

Mouthfeel: Just above medium in body and a bit heavy for an IPA. Average drinkability and regular carbonation.

Final Thoughts: Chose this one from the tap list because I assume it's a one-off type deal. Definitely an interesting beer but far from the being in the top of Surly's line up. Basically a hopped up brown ale. Would I drink it again? Maybe. (562 characters)

On tap at the taproom.

Color is a dark brown with an off-white head.

Flavor profile: Roasted malts. Kind of smokey from the peat. Caramel and chocolate. The oak shows with notes of vanilla. A lot grassy and floral hops. Bitter, but creamy. Some fruitiness. Some coffee.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, creamy, and bitter. Medium bodied.

Overall, a solid brew. Very interesting and it had a lot going on with it. Unique is a good word for it. (432 characters)
