It's always exciting when Surly releases a new beer. So I felt compelled to try this one. Canned 21 Feb 2014.
Pours dark, essentially black. Deep brown at the edges. One finger of medium-tan head, okay retention, nice lacing.
Smell reminds me of Abrasive, with a dark streak. Has the same vibrant grapefruit-heavy citrus hops, though they're not as eruptive as they are in Abrasive. The light char and dark roast are a nice complement.
Taste is typical of most black IPAs - like a hopped-up stout. Dark-roasted malts bring wood and char. The hops add bitterness on top of that, so the finish is a tingly mix of variations on the bitter theme.
Feel is quite good. Medium-bodied, with fuzzy carbonation that spreads the beer throughout the mouth. Lasting, a little prickly in the finish before it fades.
Really good for the style, but in my opinion, not on the level of, say, Stone's versions. The hops don't blend quite as well as they could, and the flavor is fairly simple. It's like a toned-down black version of Abrasive. That could be amazing, but it's merely good.

Pitch black body allows no light to pass through. A thick, light brown head with great retention and lacing.
This is a potent black ale, and I love it! More pine and tropical fruit than any other beer I've had to date. Very fresh aroma - clean and earthy. A hint of roasted malt and cola.
This hop forward beer packs a punch. Plenty of earthy pine notes and some and a bit of grapefruit and tangerine. A malty backbone, rich with bittersweet cocoa and roasted coffee. Has an interesting sweet flavor on the finish and it clashes a bit with the booziness of this brew. However, it's still highly enjoyable.
Quite thick for the style and lightly carbonated. Dry finish.
A fantastic brew that is best enjoyed one slow sip at a time. The explosive flavor of this one will catch you off guard if you don't prepare yourself. Worth every penny!
