Poured from a 750 ml waxed bottle into a Surly stemmed chalice.
Appearance: Pours a bright golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big two finger white head which settles into a thin patchy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing.
Smell: A ripe, juicy, and dank hoppy aroma with good hints of citrus fruit and pine. Upfront citrus fruit hints of orange peel, lemon zest, grapefruit, mango, tangerine, and melon. Big herbal hop scent of pine resin. Pale malt with hints of grains, cracker, caramel, and yeast. A very good hop forward aroma.
Taste: Like it smells, a nicely juicy and herbal hop forward taste with good notes of citrus fruit and pine. Upfront taste of citrus fruit with notes of orange peel, lemon peel, grapefruit, tangerine, mango, and melon. Herbal and spicy hops with notes of pine resin and grass. Backing pale malt notes of cracker, grains, caramel, and yeast. A very good hop forward IPA like taste.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Crisp, juicy, and somewhat oily with a drying finish.
Overall: A very good hop forward Pale Ale. Big citrus and pine flavor. Very much like a West Coast style IPA. A pretty cool collaboration.

Poured from a 750mL wax-top bomber into a tulip glass.
L: Pours a light-orange yellow, with a nice thick head. Lovely pour, really.
S: Smell is citrus, and pine. Pleasant, but not as pine-heavy as many of the other IPAs. The citrus is the dominant smell here. Lemon and orange.
T: Tastes much like it smells. The pine is less dominant on the taste, though. Citrus comes forward, very lemon, maybe even with some ginger here. Quite nice, really.
F: Smooth, almost creamy, but with a nice carbonation.
O: I picked this up on a close-out sale. Many IPAs don't have much of a shelf life, but this one drank remarkably well for its age... quite a good IPA, and a successful collaboration.

Hey, check it out, another Surly beer that I've notated upon in the past month, unable to reveal to you until now. It's another ...well, you'll get the picture once you read these notes...from July 22, 2015, at 3:44 A.M.
Surly/Lervig 1349 Pale Ale. Alc. 6.66% by Vol. (naturally.) Brewed and bottled by Surly Brewing Company, Minneapolis and Brooklyn Center, MN.
Hmmm. Another collaboration with a Scandanavian brewer, another beer inspired by a heavy metal band. Ho hum. Get out of your rut, Surly! Make a beer with an Argentinean brewery, inspired by a barbershop quartet.
This is one of two 1349 beers, the Pale one. Okay, the wax is off, the cap removed, the ale in the glass. Let's drink:
Appearance: clear, bright golden, slimmish, but lasting chalk white head.
Aroma: Lovely, lovely piney and citric hop notes hit first. Tropical tones are ushered in next, Pineapple, orange, mango, guava. Soft, supple, sensuous.
Taste: Again, bittersweet hop notes board the palate first, some floral tones, too, but fruit remains dominant. Lean, that is to say, light-bodied. Exquisitely drinkable. Bright and beautiful citrus and tropical fruit notes explode on the tongue. Bitterness remains steadfast, holding strong, but falters or wavers or edges into the realm of the overbearing. It's high hopping reminds one of double IPAs, but the moderate alcohol level keeps it from becoming one.
There's some grandiose verbiage on the back of the bottle, urging us to revel in the Dionysian pleasure(!). A lot of gobbledygook. It does introduce a new word to me, one I'm aching to understand: "feinschmacker." I'm not sure what that means, but I know they've been called worse.

750ml waxed and capped bottle into a Heady Topper stemless snifter. Shared with schen9303.
Pours a frothy, 2 finger white head with moderate retention. Beer is a clear, bright goldenrod with a slight orange hue. Lacing is messy and spotty with little cling. Average.
Nose is pine, citrus, tree sap, tea and a touch of grassiness. Solid but I can tell I probably won't like this sap-based hoppy offering.
Opens tree sap, grass, dried tea leaves and bark. Grassy with a slight touch of citrus and ear wax in the middle. Ends with a bit of tartness and a whole lot of bitterness. Lingering, filmy bitter aftertaste. Nope. Not for me.
Light bodied with ample carbonation. Prickly and lively in the mouth and goes down smooth and slick. Quenching and crisp finish with a lightly lingering aftertaste. Decent.
This is a decently made beer but the hop flavor profile here is just not for me. I'll pass the next time I come across this.
