Re-reviewing here jan 2012, a bit of a melancholy tone. This beer has lost something over the last year. Batch variation, recipe change, growing pains for Surly, who knows.
The brightness in the flavors hasn't been there consistently over the past 6 months. (not a freshness issue, I almost always get it 2-3 weeks old). Rusty and malty flavors are more prominent. Frankly, it tastes old much of the time, and the pine/citrus fresh blast has somehow been muted.
I have had a 4 pack or two randomly that tastes like the classic beer reviewed below, but it's now an anomaly. (tap seems to be more reliable, although not immune.) I've moved on to Two Hearted or Lagunitas when buying IPAs.
And no, it's not "lupulin threshold shift" or some other excuse. The beer isn't consistently as good as it used to be.

Red glow to the beer. Smells of pine needles and grapefruit. A friend who tried it for the first time told me "it smells like Christmas."
I agree, a fresh cut tree just brought into the house with a bunch of ripe grapefruit dripping from it. Yep, those smells, turned up to 11.
I have yet to smell a better beer.
Hops and pine needles and grapefruit and tongue curling bitterness. A crisp, relatively dry aftertaste with a bit of oily resin, balanced just enough with that special Scottish malt. A great beer for a hophead. Only criticism is it's a bit thin. Thicken it up with some resin, bump the ABV up to 7.0%, and I would rarely drink anything else.
To top it off, my wife loves this beer so I have an excuse to keep it around at all times without getting "the talk."
My IPA measuring stick.
